Hurley In Er

Recommended Posts

I am not sure how it progressed from last night to where we are now but the 3rd shift E-vet did say we probably caught this early.

Hurley all of a sudden while laying on the couch, lifted his head and vomitted a very small quantity.

Tried vomitting more (once he got a decent amount of whitish liquid, possibly acidic), making retching sounds, restless. Went to lay down and it was worse.

Coughing outside. Lots of laboured breathing. We waited (he has aspiration pneumonia 2 yrs ago...saw very similar reactions....he must have swallowed something into his lungs, possibly vomit) about an hour. Still trouble breathing. Went to ER. He was calm, no sign of distress.

They admitted him for testing.

Now they want to do $3K surgery. We have insurance but looking for help.

Will fill in missing details but have like 30 minutes b4 we talk to vet again.

What do the x-rays show? If he has GDV, surgery is your only option and needs to be done asap. If he has something else, answer might be different.

Is it definitely Bloat? How old is the dog, and most likely, if it is bloat, the surgery should correct it. It is a risky surgery, as the vet may have told you. I am sure you will make the right decision. '

Bold Energy had something similar. It was diagnosed as (Intussusception is a condition that develops when one part of the intestine folds into itself, like a telescope). Major surgery being the only option to correct it. I opted against the surgery, because Energy was 11.5. He was sent to The Bridge.

Hoping for only the best for you and your baby, and sending love, hugs and prayers!

At ER, when we got there, they said they would take blood tests, xrays and possibly check to see if the cartilage in his esophagus/throat was working prpoerly in a test. We hoped he didn't have pneumonia. He was relaxed!!

She did mention bloat as a thing we need to rule out. I guess they are still ruling it out.

Oy....and I have to work in a few hours......my poor Hurley Dawg!!

Oh yes, they want to do surgery to repair any damage. The stomach is NOT twisted now but could have been and then it untwisted itself. Preventative measure would be to tack the stomach to chest wall. this would be done no matter what they find in surgery.

Ultrasound may be unnneeded because fluid buildup could prevent proper dx.

Morning vet used term GDV Gastric Distenstion Volvitis (????????) and when I asked if it was bloat, she said "Well.....it's when stomach twists and yadda yadda...."

So, looking it up online, that's what bloat is. Not sure why she doesn't call it that.

Calling regular vet now, Mary Jo!

Bloat and GDV are actually 2 different conditions. You can have bloat without GDV, although if you have GDV you do have bloat too. A dog can bloat for reasons other than the stomach twisting (the volvulus part).

If the stomach in no longer twisted, why the surgery? I am not there, don't know all the details, obviously, but I would not do surgery if the sitiation has been resolved. I'd watch and follow up with my regular vet. Hopefully, your vet can contact the E-vet, and you can go from there. Any chance of calling out with work? Love and prayers!

It is still possible he has GDV and the differences were explained to me when I pressed for clarification. GDV is worse and his radiographs are still inconclusive. If there are no complications found in the surgery from whatever did or did not happen....then prophylactic gastroplexy will be performed which is tacking the stomach to the lateral chest wall in order to prevent this from happening. We decided not to wait since damage could have occurred which could be dangerous. I trust these vets and the specialist is arriving in time for the surgery. I will get updates at work: no use sitting in their waiting room on pins and needles when I can be earning the $$ to pay for surgery. we decided toskip ultrasound and go staright to surgery....I am surprised that I did not object but I really want to take care of this now rather than wait to have it done anyway later. Insurance could cover as much as a 1/3 of it but it depends on what they call the diagnosis.

Cross your fingers that he goes thru it smoothly and is alert and recovering by the time I get off work tonight!!!!!

Sounds like you have it all under control and are doing what is best for your pup. Yes, I do understand being at work and not biting your nails at the E-vets. I have "been there done that," with Energy.

Good Luck, love, hugs and prayers!

So sorry that all this is happening so quickly. I am sure you made the correct decision after weighing all the options. Prayers for Hurley for an uneventful surgery and recovery.getwell.gif

sending many prayers!!!!

Rainey had the same thing in February, her stomach was not full of gas but had "flipped" up 180 degrees to the top of her ab cavity. THey had to do in to see why (no reason it turns out, i.e. no tumors, thank God) and they did the tacking while they were in there. Well worth it if they are in there anyway!

sending prayers your way!!! :hope :hope :hope

THANK YOU ALL FOR THE WONDERFUL WISHES OF WELLNESS!! IT WORKED!!

Hurley came through fine and had no necrotic tissue...the gastroplexy (tacking) worked and he should never twist his stomach again. He is fine post-op and I will stop and see him tonight.
