CaliforniaGreys
I'm curious what the vet said about the skin covered tooth. Did you get any details? Like people said here, epulis. He did a great job removing it and the tooth underneath was little and bright white. That's call "DRUGS", Claudia!! seeh2o
Oh, this is such good news! Poor guy, they just don't know how to tell us they are uncomfortable. Claudia, if he was that lively and had a sore tooth.....you'd better nail everything to the walls and floor when he starts feeling better because..... Lenny and Ekko are IN THE HOUSE ! Guest BrisBrindles
See what looks like a growth is actually a tooth covered by his gum. Has anyone ever seen this before? That is called gingival hyperplasia. Which means gums=gingiva and hyper=too much, plasia = growth so a whole lotta latin for too much gum tissue. I've not seen it in dogs, but then again...I don't DO dog teeth lol (well, except my own dogs), but I have seen it in humans. It's generally caused by one of two things; 1) medicines such as older anti seizure or 2) bacterial overgrowth, with a lot of calculus aka "tartar" ...the calculus is rough and hard like cement and it just holds the bacteria on like a yucky fungus, think of the green algae on rocks under water , so it irritates the gums causing it to over grow. Hopefully a good cleaning will help, but when the gums are that overgrown, the only thing to do is cut them back. Done the easiest way is with a scalpel and just cut it off no stitches required or a cauterizing tool can be used, which kind of burns the tissue away. Either way is no big deal, though it can cause some soreness afterward for a few days...in people we tell to rinse with salt water...not sure what you can do with a dog, and if you daub salt water on it will sting quite a bit. I'd ask the vet, he'll probably just tell you to leave it alone and make sure to brush or wipe the teeth clean each day with a gauze piece.
