Guest MnMDogs Posted April 23, 2009 Share Posted April 23, 2009 I can't quite believe that I'm writing this. But Matty has a lesion on her left femur. The radiologist is reading it later today. Has anyone had something like this end up not being bone cancer? I know Robin and Loca had a huge scare, and it turned out very well. Does anyone else have any positive outcomes? Please... A friend had a greyhound with VF who had quite a few lesions, although I don't remember exactly where on his body they were. Sending good thoughts your way. Arizona, Mexico and Southern California are hot beds for it. Where did you pup come from? I had a awful weekend waiting for results from the specialist. Valley Fever mimicks Cancer in xrays. Shanti had a bunch done. He told me it could be 2 things. Cancer or Fungal. She had already tested negative for fungal (VF). I sadly thought Shanti was leaving me the next week from those xrays. I also know of two hounds that had preliminary osteo diagnoses from their regular Vets but the specialists found one to be osteo-arthritis and the other to be an old break. Sadly, Matty is from Massachusetts and has never been to the SW, and as far as I know, the only break she had was the right hock, and this is the left femur. I will ask when the vet calls back about all other possibilities if the radiologist confirms a lesion. I brought her in for a lump on her jaw (fatty tumor), not this. I honestly thought she just pulled a muscle running around like the lunatic senior that she is. The xrays were supposed to confirm she was fine and needed to rest for a bit. My vet said the same thing for Gogh, we were going to do the lung xrays first & then the bone biopsy. Unfortunately the lung xray gave us all we needed to know. Guest LynnM Posted April 23, 2009 Share Posted April 23, 2009 YES! Infection and bone cancer look a whole lot alike. There are a few things that show up on a cancerous lesion sometimes but not on infection, but the two generally look a LOT alike. If I had a young dog that had a suspect lesion, I'd ask my vet for Baytril and Clavamox or whatever "kill anything/everything" combo of antibiotics he or she prefers and give the dog until you get a more conclusive diagnosis. At worst, you're out $50 for the meds and still have a dog with cancer. FYI, bone infections DO happen without a break. Bacteria can enter from anywhere (like a small cut), travel via the bloodstream, and find a comfy spot in the long bone of the animal (or person). It happens most often in adolescents, IIRC. My Louis was one such dog. He had an intermittent lameness at the track and in the adoption kennel. I brought him home so my vet could evaluate his lameness (she's very, very good at diagnosing pain). Well, the stress of the move made the infection bloom. We took x-rays 3 days apart, 3 series, if I remember right. The first one looked like an ugly cancer lesion. The next one looked like a bone that was about to break. The last one was the day we took the biopsy. There was so much nasty, spongy bone from the infection and inflammatory response that we were able to get samples with a 19 gauge, 1 1/2 inch long needle. OF HIS FEMUR. (FYI, this normally would require a drill). Because he was only 2 years old, and cancer would be a VERY unlikely diagnosis, even though symptoms were pointing that way, we decided to give him lots of pain meds, and a pile of antibiotics. I was able to keep him comfortable over the weekend and when we x-rayed again, the lesion was nearly gone. He was on antibiotics for over a month (bone infections require long courses of treatment), but in the end, he was completely sound. Lynn Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

The vet also mentioned the possibility of a fungal infection or osteomyelitis. But we won't know without a biopsy. At her age (9.5...I really thought she would make it to at least 10), I can't do that to her. We're just going to keep her comfortable and let her go when it's time. The vet estimated "months", and I promised Matty that I won't let her suffer. She's my first and as too many of you know - this is just the sickest feeling in the world.
