Average Age Of Bone Cancer In Hounds?

Guest Chanda

Recommended Posts

I was wondering what an average age a greyhound would get bone cancer? I have a 5 year old female that was just diagnosed with it and it seems like she is a little young. I am still not convinced that she has cancer and am investigating other options as well as sending off her x-rays to some specialists. She just seems so young!

I am so sorry to hear of your girl's diagnosis. Cancer is a beast and I have known greys as young as four who have been correctly diagnosed with osteo. Wish I could say no way that it could be but there is a lot of good information on osteo in this forum that will help you as you both fight it.

Good luck - my thoughts and prayers are with you.

My girlfriend's was 6. That's the youngest I know. I think there was a Greyhound that was something like 1 1/2 yo that had it. I'm not certain, tho.

I'm sorry to hear about your girl. I hope they're wrong.

I fostered a lovely 2-yr. old boy who had it in the wrist area of the front leg. WAY too young. :cry1 My own hounds were diagnosed between 9 to 10 yrs. old. I'm very sorry you're having to face this diagnosis with your grey. :grouphug Rule out Valley Fever and any other fungal diseases as they can present on an x-ray in a very similar fashion to OS.

I'm so sorry you are facing this. Saddly osteo can hit at any age. You can get a free consult from OSU's Grreyhound Health and Wellness Program (by email) the link is at the bottom of my siggy.

I've just sent Dr Couto an email to ask if that is data he has on average age.

:grouphug I'm so sorry to read this. When my 5-year-old Snickers started limping just a few months after her fifth birthday, I was stunned that she had osteo so young. It can happen, although I think I remember the average age is 9. Did you join Circle of Grey yet? Dr. Cuoto at OSU is a wonderful, caring resource too.

Our only osteo greyhound was 12, passed away just after turning 13.

I'm sorry to read about your girl. 5 seems so very young :( Dr. Couto and his team are wonderful...I would recommend emailing them.

Hi Chanda - I am so sorry that your sweet young girl has been diagnosed with this most awful disease. If you have not contacted Dr. Cuoto and OSU, I would do so as quickly as possible. They have helped so many who are facing this devastating disease. We consider them our guardain angels for without them, and all the wonderful support and prayers from those here on GT, we would have not gotten an extra 3 months of joyful living for our sweet Angel Vinnie. Vinnie is in Dr. Cuoto's study and a couple of others, my understanding is that he is still listed as the youngest diagnosed and lost to this horrible disease - Vinnie was 11 months old at diagnosis and we did amputation (right front) and chemo (on number 3) before we walked him to the Bride on his 14 month birthday. Our hearts still hurt and I cry everytime a new houndie is diagnosed with this beast. There are some wonderful life stories though - Darcy, Asia, Polli - who have gone through amp and are fighting this beast every day, along with some new houndies like Willie and Sadie who have just joined in this very personal fight. Along with memories of those recently joining our Angel at the Bridge, Ember, Jack, and way too many others to name a couple. You will find a lot of support and options here. There is so much to know about this horrible disease. Please post a picture of your sweet girl along with some information on her, we would like to add her to our prayers and as you know, we are a very visual group. Sending hugs and scritches and lots of healing white light.

I guess I am a little uncertain that she actually has cancer at this point. There was a long series of events that preceded the 'limp' that I brought her to the vet for. There was an injury to the toe on the opposite front leg, a jump over a small fence and some wild running and so on...

The vet barely moved her leg around and then x-rayed her and found the slight 'shadows' in the upper end of her shoulder bone. There is no comparison to old x-rays (there weren't any) and no comparison of her other shoulder bone.

I just had my girl seen by a chiro/accu guy I know and he did a LOT more poking around and manipulating of her shoulder. She was not painful on the bone at all and was instead obviously painful much higher up where the nerve runs down to the leg.

As she is limping her leg hangs very low and she doesn't seem to be able to place her food down normally. It is curled under which is a sign of nerve damage.

It certainly may be that she does have bone cancer as well as an injury to her nerve. I am just not sure at this point.

Some of the questions that I have are,

What did the limp start out like?

Did they suddenly appear unable to use the leg or did they start out being tender on it and did it get worse from there?

Were they uncomfortable laying down or more comfortable laying down?

How much pain were they in and how fast did the pain start?

I will check out the OSU link as well.

Thanks,

Chanda

Dear was 8 when he was diagnosed with hermangio sarcoma, Bool was 7 when he had hermangio sarcoma. My friend Cynde's dog Threat was 6 when he was diagnosed with bone cancer.

I have lost 2 to osteo. Hawk was 9 1/2 and Beecher was almost 12. Hawk's cancer was on his leg but Beecher's was a tumor on his ribs. No limping for Beecher. I just looked at him one day and there it was, a large tumor. I could not believe how big it got so fast.

My two osteosarcoma boys were 8 and 10.5 when diagnosed.

As to the suddenness of the limp, it varies widely. Morgan started limping on a Friday night and Sunday morning his leg broke. Alex limped on/off for a few months before we had a diagnosis.

Sometimes it's clearly osteosarcoma on the x-rays and sometimes it's not. As you are doing, I strongly suggest having x-rays read by a specialist if there is any doubt.

It sucks, doesn't it? Lewis had just turned 7 when he was diagnosed. It started out with him just looking stiff in the rear; he never fussed or looked uncomfortable...just a little stiff-gaited. I have opted not to amputate; he's on Tramadol and Meloxicam and doing very well after six weeks.
