Guest mandm
3.5 lbs seems like a lot, but it isn't. When my large male greyhound was very sick, recovering from TBD and most likely IBD (suspected but not confirmed with biopsy) he was eating 5-6 lbs per day. Diet consisted of meat & bone only. I fed 4 meals per day. It took several months, maybe 4 or more, for him to gain the 10+ lbs that he needed. Once he achieved a healthy weight, I gradually cut back the amount & frequency of his meals. That was a little over 2 years ago. He is now a healthy 85 lbs and eats about 3 lbs per day. As his stomach heals, I find that I can feed him less & less. But the healing process is very slow.

I don't have experience with it myself, but maybe Beau needs to eat more than 3.5 pounds of fish a day? How many meals are you doing per day? The thing that has helped me get some weight on Teagan the past few months was starting to feed 3-4 meals per day instead of 2. Maybe you could feed Beau even more often than that, maybe he would eat more in a day? Best of luck. ~Lindsay~

If he would eat 8 pounds a day, I would be suppling the fish. he will only eat, what he will eat. He usually eats at 7:30AM, 3PM (DH will close up his office and come home to do this) 6PM 9PM and 10PM. He will usually take 4 meals. RobinM
As much as I did not want to make a change in his diet AGAIN, I did. The reason is that in order to get what he needs nutrionally and caloric wise from the z/d he would have to consume at least 5 cups of kibble. When Beau was in picture perfect health, there was no way I could get more than 3 cups a day in him. To expect him to eat more now, is not reasonable. He initially liked the z/d dried when I gave it to him, but when it came time to eat a meal, he would not eat it. I added tilapia (vet said OK) and he picked out the tilapia. he filled up on the kibble and wasn't able to eat the same amount of fish he had been eating yesterday. Today he wouldn't eat it, then didn't want the fish because the fish smelled like the kibble. Made him new fish, he ate some. Offered him the kibble from the morning with the fish (it was in fridge) and he ate it at 2pm, again not eating enough of anything. The kibble fills him up but not enough of it. With much trepidation, I made the home cooked recipe provided by the specialist. I choose oat meal and over cooked it with lots of water. it was mush. I gave it to him and he liked it. Not enough to eat all of it, but he does eat several times over the course of the day. So, we are going to stay with this plan. it has the nutrients he needs. I know his poor stomach is going to be a mess again. Hopefully, not for long and hopefully he will be on track soon once we find out how to address his non absorption issues. Guest EmilyAnne
I don't have any experience at all with IBD and no advice to offer. All I can offer is 's and er's. In my Healthy Houndz blog, the homecooked recipes in the sidebar, originally came from a treatment plan for a greyhound (Lucky) who had IBD. But I don't think his IBD was anything like your Beau's. Guest koolaidnconner
Maybe try buying a few cans of the Z/D ultra allergen free soft food and mix it in. He may like that a little more. Hugs for you guys!
Guest ChasesMum
I don't know if this is a bug no no with IBD or not, but what about natural peanutbutter? make him a little "peanut sauce" for his tilapia? Maybe another type of fish? Sole? Cod? I am coming into this far after the fact so I have missed a lot of details and what you can and can't give him protein wise. Any chance of adding fattier fish? uugh! What a horrid thing to be dealing with. poor pupster!

tbhounds
Never had any luck with Z/D with my IBD boy--just too fatty. You could ask the Vet if they have any samples of Eukanuba Low Residue for you to try. My boy is currently having an awful IBD flair (in fact he was just scoped again this past Friday). He's always had diarrhea in the past but, this time his Duodenum (small intestine) is involved and he's vomiting and regurging. He taking 20mgs of Pepcid twice a day along with Reglan (helps with gut motility) three times a day. He's also taking Carafate 3 times a day and his Budesonide every 3rd day. He's S L O W L Y improving. He's now eating some of his kibble (water soaked NB Duck and Potato mixed w/ Solid Gold grain free Barking at the Moon) mixed with cooked Bison steak (purchased at A&P), boiled extra-lean beef hamburger and topped with Fat Free Beef gravy (stuff in the jar-just a tad). He gets 3-4 smalls meals through out the day. He's been having this latest flair for about 3 weeks now and like your boy he's dropped a lot of weight---he'll gain it back but, you have to do it slowly. I know how frustrating it can be--hang in there.
