What Do You Use To Repair Cracked Paws?

Recommended Posts

Bag Balm - about a 3 inch square green colored metal box. Works great and is pretty inexpensive no matter where you get it.

Someone here recommended these great rubber booties - I've forgotten the name, of course (the booties and the person!) - but they are basically like large, heavy-duty balloons with the rim cut off. They go on kind of tight, so I get the larger size. They are inexpensive as well and seem to last a while for each pair.

I'll try and find out what they are and get back to you.

Bag Balm can be found at any farm/ranch supply or feed store as it was originally (and still is) used to treat cracked, sore udders on cows.

If you want something completely natural and free of petro-chemicals, Gardener's Dream Cream from AromaCrystal is the way to go. The stuff smells and feels amazing, and boy does it work. Ye gads, I love that stuff. You can use it for just about anything that ails your skin and one of its advertised uses is actually for cracked feet--both human and animal. It's spendy, but a little bit goes a long way. My only complaint is that it can be hard to find. You might find it in a health food or New Age type store that sells bath and body products, or you can order it online at Gardener's Dream Cream

Get some Tuf-Foot and yor worries will be over. www.tuffoot.com

KV Vet also carries. Easiest way to use is to put it in a little cosmetic spray bottle and spray it on before bed. (It will stain fabric while it is wet.) IT WORKS!

PS_ Have a lot of experience with Thera-Paws. They are wonderful and will stay on even when running fast or sloshing through mud.

Ok so I'm reporting back! I bought some Bag Balm from CVS yesterday (they didn't have it at Whole Foods, which is weird ) and boy did it make a difference! This morning Merlin was ready to roll! He was really cheerful on his walk and actually trotted happily, something he hasn't done in a while - even since the cold spell started in earnest, in fact.

Thank you so much for the advice!!!!

I buy Dog Booties here.

Medium size with VELSTRETCH closure. They have worked well for us. I figured if they stay on sled dogs they should be fine for mine. They don't come up high, but I'm only concerned for their pads. All of the dogs here (my own and fosters) have worn them without issue.

Here is a picture of Ausitn and Matt with their booties on just before a walk.

P.S.... It's easier to put on booties when they are upside down.

We use booties bought from Walmart, medium size, they work very well as long as there is no walking in deep snow, and no running either, just stick to the cleared sidewalks. Have to tie the velcro on tight. We have a humidifier going in the winter too. Don't know what to use to treat the pads...
