BootsyCollins
Talked to the vet today. It is definitely cancer, and now we need to decide whether or not to do a biopsy. The way the vet explained it is that it could be osteo, or it could be a couple other cancers. If it's one of the other cancers, then amputation of his leg and shoulder blade would basically be a cure. If it's osteo, amputation would just buy some time. We had already decided against amputation, assuming it is osteo. Now we are unsure about what to do about a biopsy. I'm hesitant to put Argos through a whole lot. The vet said herself that the odds that it's not osteo are very slim, and that the biopsy would probably just confirm what we already pretty much know. I just don't know what to do. In the meantime, I'm taking lots of photos of Argos, and we're trying to go for walks when he's up for it, and generally just spoil him rotten. I just can't believe this is happening. Guest jurishound
I am so sorry to hear about your houndie. My memory is that Dr. Couto does not favor bone biposies, but certainly check in with him about it. Sending hope for the best possible outcome for your (grey) boy. Guest longdogs
We had a biopsy done on Nugget, partly because she was already in hospital under anaesthetic for something else when her x-rays revealed an abnormality, partly because the lesion was at a very early stage and small. At the time our vet, a specialist in this area, explained that the damage from osteo is very distinctive and not often misdiagnosed. He was sure about what it was and he was right. The biopsy is worthwhile if there is any substancial doubt, otherwise it is a fairly painful procedure even if they recover quickly. I'm really sorry this has happened. All you can do is make the best of it.

Guest Naty
I am so sorry that what should be a happy time for your family is tainted with the news on Argos' health. You have my prayers. We opted against biopsy when we faced this disease with Troy. A friend regretted putting her hound through the pain of biopsy when her own hound was diagnosed. Take care. I'm so sorry Star also had osteo in her shoulder - we did not amputate and had about two months with her before we thought it time. If you want to "talk" let me know. You sure have the right idea - taking pictures - spending quality time. I'm just so very sorry this is happening. I'd have a frank discussion with the vet about the pain and recovery from a biopsy. We did have one, but I'm almost positive it was an aspirate. They numbed the area, inserted the needle - she was not put under and walked out within 1/2 hour or so. I would ask about the specific procedure for the biopsy they want to take before you decide.
