Pepcid & Other Meds

I just bought Miles some famotidine at the drugstore, generic for Pepcid AC. The tabs are 10mg.

How much do I give Miles, 1 tab? He's supposed to be around 73 lbs.

The box says to prevent symptoms to give one hour before a meal.To relieve symptoms, 1 tab, do not chew.

Do most of you just put the tab in with a meal? I've been doing that with the famotidine the vet prescribed for him.

Also, the vet said to use the slippery elm when I can tell miles is starting in on an episode. But what about the Pepcid? Should I use this everyday as some of you do?

Obviously I forgot to ask...

Also, isn't there a place here that has dosages of human meds for the dogs? Where is it?

For his size, you could use 20 mg. of Pepcid. When I used it with hounds that were getting an NSAID or Pred, I'd give the Pepcid 30 to 60 min. before a meal (in a little piece of cheese or lunch meat), then gave the NSAID with food. That seemed to protect the tummy very well. :)

Okay...the prescription famotidine is 20mg. a tablet given once every 12 hours 'for nausea'.

I just read that it's an antihistamine of sorts to decrease the amount of digestive acids.

So if you take away the digestive acids (which I understand when one is suffering ulcers), how do they digest foods?

Since he's been eating finally, I've given him three smaller meals a day rather than two meals. Figure it's be better on the digestive system.

How long should I do this? And how long should I do the Pepcid. I read that ulcers take a few months to heal.

If he has an ulcer and the med is working, I'd leave him on it. I've had dogs on stomach meds for years. Carafate is a good med for ulcers. What does the vet say?

Re digesting: If in fact they are producing excess acid, all the anti acid does is cut the acid, not remove it. Since dogs have digestion enzymes in their mouth in addition to stomach, I think they do ok.

As Burpdog said, you can give these meds long term. I would probaby start with 10mg twice a day and see how he does, but if you and your vet are more comfortable starting stronger, I wouldn't raise an eyebrow.

Alan is around 90 lbs. He started off getting pepcid 10 mgs. twice a day. I give him one about 1/2 before breakfast and the other one at night. He is now up to 20 mgs. twice a day. I mixed it in a piece of cheese and he takes it.

Sugar was on so many meds that I just gave her a Pepcid (usually generic) twice a day along with everything else. We started with the 10 mg, but later upped it to the 20. I think it really helped.

I gave some to Fletcher with his anti-biotic when he picked up the bug (can't recall the name) that causes ulcers in people and his tummy was hurting. I believe these meds are very safe.

Our grey was recently prescribed with famotidine after visiting a Cornell University internal medicine specialist. Her directions were to dissolve the tablet in 5ml of water or chix broth and administer it one hour prior to eating. She said that the stomach needs to be acidic for the famotidine to bind and help with any healing. :colgate

I just pill 'em :)

One 10 mg in the morning and one before supper if they're having a bad day.

I am still looking for the mint EZ chews which are 20 mg. I can only find Berry :puke I am hoping they are a redesign of the 10 mg chewables we used to use with Vinnie. If one had these, you wouldn't need to disolve as they dissolve very quickly on their own ;) Again, I just pill 'em :dunno

Can everyone explain what exactly you use Pepcid for? I have a foster who is on it twice daily, I think for vomiting and/or diarrhea. He actually has had greyt poops and only vomited once in a week so I'm wondering if I should just continue with it?

Missile is 90 pounds and I give him 10mg. Pepcid 2X a day with meals. He gets less of both meals so I can add a third mini meal at night before bed. It seems to work like a charm. Prior to the Pepcid he was puking up yellow bile in the am's before breakfast, sometimes in the evenings about 1-2X a week. It was awful watching him.

Most of you administer the Pepcid before meals. I administer with meals and I tell you, he has only ever puked once in about 3 months on it.

Pepcid (famotidine) is for vomiting / nausea / upset stomach.

If he's been having vomiting/diarrhea problems for a long time, I'd probably be cautious ... but if it was an acute thing, I'd think you could try eliminating the pepcid and see how he does.
