Beau's Leg Again. Left At Vet Saturday Morning

Recommended Posts

Just 2 weeks ago, I brought Beau in to the vet because he was not using his back right leg, at all. This is the same leg that he had major surgery in a year before from being silly and crazy in our backyard.

Vet felt no swelling but the tendons were very tight and he screamed.

Felt it could be either trauma to a already suscepible leg in which case rest rest rest is in order OR possibly another rip which wouldn't show in any other way other than lameness or exploratory.

Her feeling is that since the x-ray in May was clean, we should keep him rested, give him deramaxxfor the next 2 weeks and if nothing changes, we will have to sedate him to have the leg manipulated to see what's up.

As she said, he should NOT be going through this every 3 months.

He got better over the last 2 weeks and was himself again. It's hard to keep Beau quiet as he is just not that type of puppy. He jumps and goes crazy tearing down the steps when we go downstairs. There is no way to restrain this nutjob.

Tonight out of the blue, once again he is tripoding. I went over to the bed where he was lying down and put my hand on the bad leg as if to lightly massage it and it's vibrating. I not sure if it's a spasm or what?

I gave him a deramaxx & tramadol and there will be no walks tonight although he is started to stare at me and whine which is the prelude to the nightly dog walks. He is hoping from bed to bed, I think he is having trouble getting comfortable.

I will call the vet in the morning.

Yeesh, poor Beau. :(

UPDATE SATURDAY MORNING-

I brought Beau in as an emergency visit early this morning instead of waiting for a 10:20 appointment, this way he was NPO.

When she felt his leg she noticed that his knee cap was popping in and out??? WHAT THE HECK DID THIS INSANE BOY DO NOW???

Anyway, they will sedate him and do another set of x-rays to see what's up. If necessay e will need ortho surgery...again Monday.

Please pray for my Beau...again. I just hope it's as easy as popping it back in and he's back to normal. My poor baby. he was FLIPPING when I left him. Heck, he was flipping when we pulled up at the vet.

:(

I swear the waiting is sometimes tougher than when you finally hear what's wrong. And Beau is no queen, he is brave, and a manly dog!! Robin, your vet should build a new wing and name after you. Oh wait...or did you already build that wing?

He couldn't get comfortable and finally after hobbling from one bed to another and back to the first and starting over again while whimpering, he roached and looked a lot more comfortable.

Taking all the pressure off helped, I'm sure. I did notice that there was tremendous swelling on the inside of his right thigh area.

My guess is he ripped something and he needs surgery. I hope to GD he dosen't but the fact it looks the way it is and he is whimpering a lot, I think there is something serious going on again.

PLEASE PRAY FOR MY BEAU BEAU. I am sick over this again.

I am trying to process all the vet said.

There are several things going on which are baffling the vets.

1) HIP DYPLASIA TYPE OF THING. Yes, you heard right.

2) there is a dark spot on the leg. It was clean in May and now there is something there. Arthritis too which was not apparent in May. She said if it were any other breed of dog, she would not be over anyalizing this but because it's a GH, they are sending the pictures going to Cornell radiologists and then OSU.

It gets weirder

3) when they had him on his side, certain things were evident and when they moved him to his back, they were not seen.

I need mega prayers for this baby boy who JUST turned 4 years old. He is a baby in so many ways and most importantly, he is my baby boy.

I can not put into words the way I feel about my Beau.

So, he will come home in about an hour or 2 as he is still groggy. Steriods, glucosomine (which he has been on) to keep him comfortable.

I am praying that the "dark spot is nothing and the HIP thing... isn't.

Here we go, another waiting game.Seeing things that are evident on his side and then not when he's on his back doesn't sound wierd.Beau is so young but one of the things I've learned from this site is that age is never a factor in problems for these hounds. I just hope they get to the bottom of it and it's easily fixed or can be controlled so that this boy is comfortable. I wish this wasn't happening

No expert here (so I hope someone else chimes in ) but I highly doubt that he has hip dysplasia... Greyhounds would not be successfull at running if this was in their genes.

If there is something in his hips, it is more likely to be an injury.

My LabMix has hip dysplasia. We didn't find out until she was 10 years old and other than difficulty getting up, we never knew. She's 14 and still going strong.

Oh, nearly forgot... :grouphug for you and Beau... I hope you get good news from Cornell and OSU. :goodluck
