Guest koolaidnconner Posted June 2, 2008 Share Posted June 2, 2008 (edited) INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE.....Which is what the vet has always thought but we have been doing all treatments to the book except for one. Our dogs are very spoiled and get lots of people food. The vet said no more, absolutly NONE, and no milk bones either. He has some sort of severe allergy and now we have to get some prescribed food to try, which we have had a few but this stuff is allergy free or something, and she is sending his file of to a specialist to see what he says. There are a number of people here who have dogs with it and should be able to offer help. I know for many feeding raw in the end seems to be the most help. Most vets hate that I think. Give it at least a couple of bags of a given food before you think about changing, unless, of course, things get worse on the new food. We've had Daisy three years and we're just getting to the point of giving her a carrot or small piece of pork scrap. She's definitely sensitive to rice (of all things) but we're not sure what else. Daisy doesn't have IBD, but she itched so bad she chewed her fur off the first few months we had her. Good luck. To control it? I thought we were getting better and well the last 2 nights he has been up well lots, I can't even keep track anymore because I am so tired. Last night he actually woke the 2 younger ones and they were scared. Just took Conner outside and some guy a few doors down came outside and screamed "Shut your F****** dog up!" Now what do I do? Is Conner on any medication? I believe a number of steroids are usually prescribed to reduce the inflammation that is causing his pain (prednisone, budesonide, even azathioprine). Diet is a big part of the treatment but first his gut needs to be calmed down. I'm sure once your neighbor knows why poor Connor is screaming he will be a little more tolerant of the noise. But I guess maybe it will start helping with eliminating all people food. We were so bad at that. I even threw out the crust of my daughters sandwich this morning instead of giving it to Kool Aid, just to make sure Conner did not get any. You have to do this for 12 straight weeks and then look at the results. Don't get discouraged because I have dealth with IBD in animals and it took me upwards of 6 months to find a food that works. It can be frustrating but just have patience... You will be rewarded in the end with a healthy dog. No wheat, gluten, dairy, proteins, veggies or starches. it can be ANY of these. My girl is allergic to Meat Proteins. If you give them anything besides his food during the 12 week period you will have to start over again. It stinks and you want to treat your dog but do what I did and give him pieces of his dry food for treats. Until we got her stablilized and realized what the problem is, i could start re-introducing things back into her diet. I actually bake dog cookies for her now. I always did for Boo but wasn't able to for Shelby because of her allergies. Now i make them like crazy and treat her up the wazooo. She has been healthy and hasn't had any allergy related issues since we found the right food... The other thing you can do is use some canned and dry food, grind it up and mix it with some water only (into a thick dough like substance) and make little 2 inch meatballs out of it and bake it in the oven for 45 minutes at 350 degrees and shut the oven off and let them sit in there until the oven completely cools. Then leave them out over night and they should be nice an crunchy. It changes the smell of the food and turns it into a special treat. Good luck and I hope you find a speedy solution... Pancreatitis, IBD, spleen issues, diabetes and a host of other ailments. Some are life threatening. If you were to give people food, boiled chicken or beef and veggies, maybe boiled rice or potatoes but NEVER butter, salt/pepper or fried foods. This is where the dog will have issues with it. I know it's hard to not feed them table scraps but if you want your dog to live long enough then you have to be strong. there is a chance your other dog can develop the same thing if you continue to feed her people food, too. So be aware of that, too.. If the food is prepped properly, you can give Kool Aid "people food" but it won't be the same as what you are eating. Nothing but dog food for Conner but for Kool Aid you can add a little garlic powder to the boiled meats. Anything other then that you are asking for trouble. One of my IBD experiences was horrible. My cat had IBD so bad that she eventually died from complications. She became anemic from the bleeding and inflamed colon and she internally bled to death before they could get it under control. It happened so fast that within 48 hours, she was gone. She died in my arms a week before my wedding. It was horrible and I never forgave myself for not picking around in the litter box to find bloody stool. She was still eating right up to the moment she died. My Boo is on home made diet and that is what I feed him. He gets checked every 6 months for a normal physical and every week for his eyes... He is in absolutely perfect physical health since he lost the extra pounds... He's been eating home made diet for 2 years now. I know that story sucks but I hear the horror stories from my mom, too (she works at my vet office) and she tells me all the time about animals and the complications that arise from IBD. So be patient, just think of it as trial and error. You will eventually get to a point where you are happy with the results. There is nothing worst then having a sick animal and not being able to help them because it becomes a waiting game. There is HOPE! Shelby is on Science Diet Z/D Ultra. This is the only thing that has helped her. If this food your vet put Conner on doesn't work with you sticking to the food restrictions, ask the vet about this food. We actually ust picked up the hills Z/D allergy free food this morning and Conner is also on Sulfaszine. crossing my fingers and any advice from you or suggestions would be great.....you have already given lots to think about. I just gave Conner is first bowl of ZD allergy free and I was worried that he was not going to like it and be picky with it, well he loved it, he gobbled about 3/4 down, and then I put water in it for him and he gobbled the rest down, fingers crossed this continues, he can be a very picy eater when it comes to dog food. I do have to figure out what I will do with Kool Aid and Oranda. We are used to free feeding and well Conner was trying to take their Nutro food.
