Guest hannahmom
Some of you mave seen that Chinghis has had an extremely swollen muzzle with fever etc that has had him at the vets overnight and made his Momma frantic with worry. Chinghis at Evets Well, after nagging the vets with 4 calls every hour or so, I finally got them to prescribe some steroids and I changed his antihistimine to one with a slightly slightly different formulation as Benedryl wasn't touching it. Well, the darndest thing has happened - his muzzle had been swollen rock hard and hot to the touch, and about an hour after his first steroid dose, a small sore opened up and started to ooze out clear fluid ( tinged with a bit of red and yellow). Since then, 4 more fissures have opend up and are producing the same stuff. It's like he's leaking out all of the fluids that were in his muzzle. I'm bathing them in warm water every hour or so, but he seems sooo much more comfortable. I'm just wondering if anyone has seen this sort of pressure release before. A piece of his fur at the top of his nose actually slid off as I was wiping off the goo. It's like watching a film about a dam under pressure cracking, but it's not violent or painful - the cracks just bring relief from the horrid pressure that had one of his eyes swollen shut. His swelling has gone down by a fantastic amount - he no longer looks like an Airdale I don't think I should be worried, but I don't pretend to understand anything about this entire illness. Has anyone seen anything like this? Tena Edited April 26, 2008 by hannahmom
Guest lotsagreys4me
Did they test for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever? He does have some of the symptoms. Keep us posted
HopeForHounds
I'm keeping a close watch on this thread. Jake is recovering from an unexplained swelling in his leg and had a fever. Jake's leg He is on Clavamox until Thursday morning. Since we can't find an entry for an infection, I have been suspecting insect bite. I'll be watching him very closely once the antibiotics are finished. I hope Chinghis starts to heal quickly now. TheFullHouse
Sounds like a really bad sinus infection, is that possible in greyhounds? Guest hannahmom
Sounds like a really bad sinus infection, is that possible in greyhounds? I wouldn't disagree, but they did a complete blood workup, and the CDC came back completely normal - absolutely no sign of infection. Another fissure has opened - again, they don't seem to be causing him any discomfort, and they are relieving the pressure.

Guest hannahmom
We're going back to the vet today. One of the fissure's discharge looks like pus this AM. He hated me using a warm cloth to clean the area, but the leaking has brought dowm the swelling and he still seems to be feeling much better I'm baffled. Send some good wishes for my sweetie

Guest hannahmom
OK - we're back from the vet Diagnosis is a secondary auto immune rxn to the original swelling Original exposure caused facial swelling increased temp and heart rate Injected steroids and IV fluids that night decreased his immune system's rxn to the point they released him, and continued to abate swelling until Thursday when the wore off and the swelling shot back up. Oral pred and a change in antihistimines brought the swelling back down but while the swelling was at it's peak, some necrosis developed and his immune system went into overdrive, which led to an abcess which got infected and then broke and started to drain in several different sites. Thankfully, all the drainage seems to be external. She can't explain why his system would ramp up like that. She's having a teleconference with a specialist at the local vet training university tomorrow. Chinghis has 10 days of antibiotics, medicated wash for the sores, 6 more days of prednisone and the maximum dose of antihistimines. Good thing he's not still racing - he'd flunk the drug test for sure I'm being teleconferenced in with the call to the vet specialist in PEI tomorrow. Chinghis seems more comfortable then he has in the week since all this began We still have NO root cause for the initial outbreak. I have personally walked every inch of the yard. No ants. no hornets.bees/wasps/spider colonies. No chemicals, no dead things to be munched on. They do not go on walkies unless I am there with them, and nothing untoward has occurred in months. No new beds, leashes, collars etc I have used the same laundry detergent for years and I know the formulation hasn't changed because I have very reactive skin and I'd be coated in hives if it had. Frankly, I have not one sweet clue. If the teleconference doesn't give us answers, she suggested a biopsy - not because she suspects cancer, but the tissue may tell us something. Momma may be broke, but the best dog in the world is napping comfortably with his favorite stuffed pig, so all is right, at least for tonight. Guest hannahmom
Sending lots of prayers. Any new plants in the yard this year? Did you check the house for spiders? Any snakes? No plants at all yet - there was a hard frost on Friday AM - we won't have anything growing for another few weeks We have always had a spider or 2, but no nests and no new webs. I have not seen a snake since I moved back to Canada in 1997. I know there are some, but I checked with the department of Natural Resources, and there has not been a poisonous snake bite reported within 300 KM of here in years. No Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever within 200 km ever We're still looking . This was to scary to just abandon once the crisis is over - I need to know what caused this so it does not happen again Thanks for the good wishes everyone Chinghis would send you a picture, but his muzzle is a little on the icky side right now.
