Jam's Story

Jam Zone was quite the racer, running in 268 races during his career. He was quite the competitor, winning a few stakes races and competing with some of the best. That’s not how we knew him…

We adopted Ossie in November of 03. He didn’t know quite what to do in a home by himself with no other greys. He was very attached to me and is still a momma’s boy.

DH traveled a lot during that time, so Ossie had problems with him coming home on the weekends and didn’t see him as a family member. It was suggested by the adoption group he was not happy by himself, he needed another grey. So did DH, he didn’t have a grey to enjoy as Ossie continued to shy away. They told us they had the perfect boy for us, a former kennel pet that was ready to go home. I didn’t care what he looked like, acted like or if he had 3 eyes, as long as he fit in with us.

Along comes Jam. We met him and were not sure what to think. Here’s this strange looking greyhound, a little bulky, scruffy looking thing with a greyhound head. I had never seen such a furry greyhound before and he was not the streamlined model either.

He was 2 weeks away from his 7th birthday, which we thought about as he might not be around too long, that was a concern since we had lost Trevor 5 months earlier.

Jam proceeded to go up to everyone for attention, and whine when he wasn’t being petted. We took him for a walk outside, he proceeded to take the biggest poo right in front of the store and could have cared less….I picked him up from the kennel two weeks later to foster to adopt.

He came home and settled right in like he had always been there. After the first day, I knew he was here for good. Ossie wasn’t sure what to think, but in a few days both had settled into a routine. Jam was still in the race mode, and would sometimes slam into Ossie when they were running in the neighbor’s yard. And they would tag - team any armadillos they spotted that were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Jam would point them out and Ossie would go for the attack. Pretty scary, but the armadillos always ran into a hole and the dogs would lose interest.

Jam taught Ossie how to play with toys and that Jon(DH) was a pretty good guy, he was great for ear scratches and treats. Jon taught Jam when a person sits on the floor to watch TV, it’s a perfect time to flop down next to them for pets and please don’t stop the pets please, or he would get upset. He also loved to go to M & G’s and the dog park, not for the other dogs but because there were more hands to pet him…..

January 06 rolls around, he had been to a M & G and I noticed later that week he coughed a couple of times, no big deal I thought. He went to the vet for his annual exam, bloodwork was fine. The following week we went out of town so both greys were boarded at a kennel I have used for years. Picked them up, but after a few days, Jam hadn’t recovered from his stay, his energy was down and he was coughing more. Took him to the vet and it was decided he had kennel cough. A week goes by, he’s not any better, they take xrays and see a little fluid build up, which bears watching. Get different meds, which seemed to help for a few days. Made appt to take xrays to Dr Gregory, the local greyhound vet for another opinion as first vet said heart was a bit enlarged. The day of the appt, Jam could barely breathe and his chest was ballooned up. Dr Gregory made a call and I rushed him over to the specialists, where he stayed overnight and the fluid was drained from his heart and abdomen…either chronic heart failure or cancer, although they couldn’t see anything on the ultrasound. Took him home with a follow up for the next week. Things were fine for a few days, but over the weekend, he swelled up and I took him back to the evet. Stayed 2 nights and was drained 2x. Took him home and I got the news the next day, the fluid they had removed was filled with cancerous cells. It was some rare form that causes the lining around the heart to shed and the fluid to buildup. By this time he had lost almost 15 lbs as his eating habits had been very sporadic. They told us he would only have a couple of days…

The kennel he raced in found out about the diagnosis and asked if they could see him. I had also become friends with the owners of another kennel and they came to visit Jam and brought us a video of him in a race. I took Jam to the track so the folks could see him again, it was a tearful reunion. He kept pulling me toward the track, so we went and watched a race. If he hadn’t been so skinny and shaved from the procedures, you wouldn’t have known he was sick by the excitement in his eyes. He had a wonderful time.

Jam, you are really missed, the house isn’t the same without you. If I had known you'd only have a short time with us, I still would have brought you home.

I know Trevor was there to greet you at the Bridge, he finally got the playmate he didn’t have on Earth. Watch over us together until we see you again….

Dana, Jon and Ossie

Excerpt from BahamaMama's Web site:

RIP Jam Zone 4/97 - 3/06

It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of Jam Zone. Jam did not race in our kennel. He raced for the Alderson Kennel in St. Pete. But through Dana Haveland and Jon Allen, we got to know Jam. He also got to visit with James Campbell, who handled him when he raced. Jam was such a vital and loving part of Jon and Dana's family. We got to visit with him last week. Even though he didn't feel up to par, he was very loving and every bit the gentleman.

I remember Jam as a racer towards the twilight of his career. The only taped race I had of him was his race with Ripley. Wasn't a very good race to share with him, but it was all we had. I thought I'd look up the earlier part of his career and he was quite a guy. He was the Fans All Star Winner in 2000. He beat future All American BD's Philip and Derby Lane Sprint Classic Champ Craigie Whistler in that race. Jam also took a couple of whacks at beating Dominator. So he was clearly a top class hound in his prime.

But where he truly shined was at his forever home where he will be so terribly missed. Our condolences go out to Dana, Jon and Ossie (the grey he left behind).

I keep thinking, "No, too many heartbreaking losses. I've got to toughen up and not cry any more." That lasted about two paragraphs in.

I am so sorry for your loss.

Missing my sweet girl Scout. My snuggler, my chow-hound, my kissy girl.
It never thunders at the Bridge, and your food bowl is ALWAYS filled.

So strange not living in Atty World. I was a love struck handmaiden to your every whim.

My thoughts are with you. I know there is nothing I can say to ease your pain but the consolation is that he was with you and shared in your love. :gh_run

Hard to read through all these tears.

Jam, I don't know what you looked like when you first came home, but you sure turned into a handsome fellow, and a well-loved one. Have fun teaching Trevor how to hunt armadillos, OK? Hugs to your mom and dad and Ossie.
