1. I had a re-occuring yeast infection problem with the Afghan hound I owned years ago. Nothing the vet prescribed worked. I was talking to an old-time dog trainer/farmer one day and he told me to go to the drug store and get some vaginal yeast infection cream made for women and put that in his ears. You know what - he was cured in less than two weeks!

It was terrible for him to have that yeast infection - with the floppy ears on this breed, it really holds in the moisture and warmth in the ear, and makes for a perfect growing medium for yeast to flourish. If you aren't afraid to try a home remedy ... give it a try.
2. Could the dog have Cushing's disease? I know in horses that failure to shed out winter coats is a clue that they have this disorder & I've heard that dogs get Cushing's too.

Edited to add: Does anyone know why I get all the funky stuff in my posts when they go on line? I don't type these extra stray letters in and they just show up. I have't posted much because of it!
3. We get our MSM and our heartworm meds from Valley Vet. I now take the MSM along with the hounds. When we had our horse farm I saw wonderful results with aging horses and arthritis using the MSM on my Arabians. Years ago it wasn't a legal substance to buy in Canada & I used to actually smuggle 5# buckets of it over to a dear friend in Ontario. His wife had MS - and this supplement helped her have so many "better" days in her life.
4. Hi and Welcome !! I think you should adopt one Greyhound to start out with. If you are like most of us, you'll be adding more - soon. With one dog, you can really bond with them, and focus your time ALL on this dog - training will go quickly, and the hound will soon settle in to your way of life. With one dog, you can fit it in the back seat of any vehicle and easily travel. Greyhounds love to go places and do things with you. and - They are just great buddies to hang with. You will learn what it is to be one of the guardians of these unique creatures. When you bring your second hound home, he/she will learn about its new life faster, as your first Greyhound will do a good job of showing the new addition the "rules" of the house. Dogs learn from each other. Welcome to the Cult Club! Please keep us updated when you adopt your dog - we love to read about happy beginnings!
5. Valley Vet Supply .... I've ordered from them for over 20 years - starting when I had my horse farm.
6. Just want to chime in here for those who have hounds that lick .... Orvis makes the best lick-proof throws and bedspreads.
7. I'm joining with all the others, sending prayers Cindy's way.
8. Run free Cougar. I'm so sorry.
9. Hello and Welcome from Michigan - It's nice to meet you both!
10. I agree that there are many Greyhounds out there that are cat and child friendly. Let your group narrow down the choices for you, and then take your little girl and current dog with you to meet the prospects. Pay close attention to the choices that the dogs seem to make! Two of the three Greyhounds I have adopted actually picked ME! (Doc didn't have much choice in the matter, as I had him brought half-way across the country to us) But in his case, I saw his picture on Greytalk and I KNEW instantly that he was our dog. And I do have to add, I was not looking to add a dog to our family at the time. In matters of the heart, you have to trust your heart. Also, I'm sure many of the people here will tell you that what you "think" you might want will most likely go right out the door when you find the right hound for you. If you go into this thinking that you would like to adopt a small fawn colored female, don't be a bit surprised if a big ole' black male comes up, leans on you and absolutely steals your heart!
11. Oh Alisha, I'm so sorry to hear that you've lost Iceman. I hope the pain you now feel will soon be replaced with warm, loving memories of this special boy.
12. Many greyhounds can sleep with their eyes wide open - you might have thought that Zero was awake, when he was actually zoned out or sleeping & you started him awake. If that was the case, who knows what he could have been dreaming about when you tried to pick him up. It was a instinctual self-preservation reaction on his part when he snapped at you, and made contact. I've been bitten almost in the same way, you learn to talk to a dog before you touch them if there is any possibility that the dog could be zoned out or sleeping. Greyhounds are unique in the dog world, but when it comes down to it - they are dogs. They still need training and they need the respect that you would give any other dog. I think that you both might benefit from a basic training class - when you tell Zero to get off of the couch and go to bed, he should jump down and go into the other room. A bit of formal training will bring you closer together and teach Zero to look to you for direction. Classes would give you something fun to do together over the winter months too. It sounds like Zero is a bit bored, since he is now trying to find ways to entertain himself in your house.
13. Both would work, but I would go with your solution, as you train away the problem - not just block them from getting to the spot.
14. I was in tears this morning reading this. What a tragic thing to happen to two sweet innocent greyhounds. I’m so, so sorry you had to go through this. I can only imagine the horror and the helplessness you felt when your poor babies were being attacked. Rest in peace Maris and Yogi … you did not deserve to have this happen to you!
15. I'm so very sorry. Dappy is now free from his pain. Dappy will always be with you in your heart.
16. Jan – I’m glad you were able to bring Bailey home, even if just for a day or so. You have some precious time left to hug your girl and love on her. Sending hugs to all of you! Cory
17. I'm joining with every one else sending healing thoughts & praying that Tippy just has a broken leg. Poor girl .....
