  1. Awesome. I'm sure she'll do great and I won't need to rush home and vaccum
  2. Dogs are not wolves. Dogs also know that you are not a dog. The below blog has lots of articles referenced/linked at the bottom. You don't need to be "sold on [positive reinforcement] being effective" - it's proven science. https://positively.com/dog-training/positive-training/the-science-behind-positive-training/ There are also lots of sources cited at the end of this article specifically on the use of shock collars.
  3. That's how Heyokha's always looks - the amount of the membrane visible, that is. Allergies make it redder, but it's pretty much always like that.
  4. I suspect that greyhounds are more adept at body language because they are kept with their dams/litters/other dogs longer than non-racing dogs, which are typically parted from their dams/littermates by 8-12 weeks. These guys are always with other dogs and have to be able to speak/read dog in order to get along. I suspect many of them do it with humans, too, though some are more subtle than others. Of the three I've had, Turbo and Heyokha were/are demonstrative and actively try to communicate. With Heyokha, when you speak to him, it's like holding a conversation. His ears prick up and he reacts to what you're saying to him. There's not a whole lot going on between Crow's ears, but he's handsome and sweet, so we just chuckle at his blank stares.
  5. My guess is she rubbed it and caused some irritation, or something bothered it (allergic reaction or conjunctivitis). I wouldn't panic yet - my guys regularly go through bloodshot eyes, especially Heyokha. H's nictitating membrane frequently looks like that, but it resolves on its own (or, when spring allergies are around, with Benadryl). At any rate, I wouldn't put anything in it unless specifically recommended by a vet. Maybe give an antihistamine and see if that helps?
  6. On the bright side, yours weighs about 20lbs less than Crow I've tried various treats, etc. with him, and to no avail. He'll act like he wants to get the treat, but then just stops. In his case, he *can* jump up - he gets up on our bed (about the same height, if not higher than my CRV) and he gets up on all the furniture. I cannot figure him out
  7. Welcome to my world. I've had Crow nearly two years and he will not get in the car. He has no fears of it, travels fine, no car sickness. Will. Not. Get. In.
  8. I'm very sorry for your loss. It's always a gut punch, even when you know it's coming I don't think I ever did Turbo justice in his remembrance thread. One day I had him, the next day I did not. It's 5 years now and still painful, but no longer raw. Take your time. He has been I don't remember him ever being grabby. Unlike some dogs we know
  9. Jen, Zuri is so polite. Mine would have knocked you over and stolen the plate Roux - I nearly named my first greyhound Biscuit. I ended up naming him Turbo. We were joking when he came off the track - he was a big white boy with a red ear and some light red ticking and at the track he was called Whitey. So when we brought him in, the adoption group said we can't call him Whitey, it sounds kinda racist. So I said we should call him Cracker Then I adopted him I seriously thought of naming him Cracker, which made me think of Biscuit (which is cute)
  10. Jen, glad you had a good evening with your boy. The mobile vet sounds absolutely awesome. Glad you were able to meet with her
  11. I didn't realize things were so bad with Zuri as you haven't posted details elsewhere (or at least, not that I've seen). I'm so sorry, Jen Glad we got to spend some time with you at the cabin and I was hoping you'd both be with us at the cookout. Hope you're enjoying this beautiful day.
  12. Does she actually *act* afraid? Tail tucked, nervous lip licking, anything? The reason I ask is that my dogs get bored with the yard and would generally rather go on walks. I'll turn them out, knowing they have to go (Heyokha in particular - he'll tank up on water until I'm sure his bladder would pop), but they'll stand there and not move off the patio. Put a leash on them and walk them out the door and they're happy as clams and do their business immediately. Just a thought
  13. Have you tried using really tasty treats to lure him (and I'm talking real meat and/or cheese)?
  14. My old boy used to have a *very* visceral reaction to wild canids. I'm not sure if they were coyotes or foxes (at least once it was a fox - I saw it in the distance, but we also have coyotes here). My normally sweet, easy-going boy would give a low, guttural growl and snarl and would piloerect from neck to tail. It was a strange thing to witness.
  15. I would have been in the last 8 years Probably closer to 8 years ago than not.
  16. Are you still touch with Eliza anymore? I think she initially tried radiation with Cookie. She might be able to offer some insight.
  17. Thanks, Jen . OP: Neylasmom (Jen) is a trainer (and my friend), so yeah, listen to her
