  1. Pizza Joint is pregnant again! This time by Gable Sour Cream. She's due in about two weeks (give or take). I'm curious about her first litter - they were born April 1. When are puppies typically named and registered?
  2. I can't restrain her or she flips out, so I'm not sure I could get a pill gun deep enough! I think a quick poke of a syringe would be fine - worked for the post surgery metacam - but anything more than that and she'd freak out.
  3. Ah, okay, I see what you're saying. I know Benadryl won't cure it but the hope is that it'll slow the growth and buy a bit more time. I need to go get liquid stuff though because she's impossible to pill
  4. Why not? She took it a couple days (and was super thirsty - I guess it dries out her mouth?) but that's it. Didn't seem to do much (it's still the same size and no smaller), but vet said to try it for two weeks and she'll take another look at her.
  5. So I can't get the Benadryl into her. I have tried everything - pill pockets, hiding it in tasty human food, even tried poking it down her throat (she flipped out and wouldn't come near me for a couple hours). I'm going to get children's liquid Benadryl, but is there a particular kind that's best to use for dogs?
  6. Missed the edit window... She's on a twice daily dose of Benadryl to see if t helps at all. I'm not keen on putting her through another surgery and I really wish the three vets I mentioned it to had done more than glance and says it was nothing. How common do you think it is for a dog to have two different types of cancer simultaneously? This tumor was definitely present before her hemangiosarcoma was removed.
  7. Not yet - vet appointment Wednesday though! Someone suggested that it could be a sebaceous cyst, since those apparently grow and shrink? That would be very preferable to another type of cancer!
  8. No bleeding, thankfully (don't know how I'd wrap it if it was bleeding). I'm not sure exactly what 'moves around' is supposed to feel like, but it doesn't feel like it's attached deep in her leg - feels mostly like it's dermal, but not just surface dermal - it feels deeper than that to my very untrained fingers! She doesn't like me poking at it, but that may also just be that she doesn't like being poked at - I think she's had enough of being messed with!
  9. Not sure if anyone else can tell (sometimes I feel like it's just me who can see this stuff ) but this is what it looked like this morning:
  10. Daisy the ~12-13 year old terrier had a (constantly bleeding) growth removed from her leg that turned out to be hemangiosarcoma (like I kept telling the vets, but none of them believed me till it was removed and sent off for pathology ). The surgery itself went well, but she was so stressed out from the anesthesia that she paced and cried the whole night - I'm nearly positive she was hallucinating, too. She wouldn't lay down and she cried for hours and hours and I cried too because there was nothing I could do to help her - she wouldn't accept cuddles or pets and couldn't stay still. I sat on the floor with her and was just there - she'd come by, stand on my leg, cry at my face, then pace away again. It took her a few days to really get back to normal. Anyway, while we were going through this ordeal (starting in July!), I noticed a little lump on the same leg and mentioned it (to every vet we went to - we were trying find a good one in our new city - took us forever but we finally did!). The theories ranged from "Just an old lady wart - they get those" (yes, she's covered in them, but none of the other ones have any portion of the 'wart' under the skin like this one) to "Doesn't look bad, so just keep an eye on it." I've mentioned that sometimes it looks bigger and then smaller, but the general consensus stays "As long as it's not doing anything, just ignore it". Today it looked really big. Not huge, but definitely bigger than it's ever been. So now I'm worried (because when am I not worried? ). Google tells me it's probably a mast cell tumor, but I was wondering if anyone has ever experienced dermal or hypodermal hemangiosarcoma growing and shrinking - I expect it's possible, as the growth on the surface of her leg changed size sometimes, swelling with more blood, then bleeding and shrinking. We are, of course, going to be headed to the vet for a biopsy or FNA (she has to go next week for her monthly anal gland squeeze anyway ). But every time I google hemangiosarcoma, threads from Greytalk show up so I thought I'd ask Oh Knowledgable Greytalkers So does anyone have any experience with hypodermal hemangiosarcoma or mast cell tumors?
  11. Ignoring it and stopping whatever activity provoked it is the right thing to do (the correction noises can help, but if you notice they're not, try leaving them out and see if just leaving the scene has more of an impact). It takes time (sometimes a lot of time!) to get through to them. I've always just stopped whatever fun or exciting thing we were doing and walked away. Not only does the fun stop, but I leave! Some catch on quicker than others. I'm sure the trainers on here will have additional advice for you!
  12. I don't think you need to wait more than a day or two. I wouldn't let him jump them for a few days, but if you put a harness on him and hang on the whole time you should be fine.
  13. Daisy the terrier is picky too. She won't eat now unless I mix meat in, and even then she picks out the good chunks! I've tried kibble and canned - she'll eat each for a couple days then turn her nose up unless I mix in meat chunks. I just made a food addition for her - it's worked in the past, so it might be worth a try for you. Not too much cooking (unless you're like me and like to hover over soup while it's simmering!) and pretty easy to do: 1.5 pounds of soup bones and 1 pound of ground meat (I use beef since chicken doesn't agree with Daisy, but you could easily toss a whole raw chicken into a pot of water and make a broth that way - even less work!) 1 bag frozen mixed veggies 1.25ish cups of oatmeal 4 eggs I put the bones in a pot with just enough water to cover them, brought it to a boil, then reduced to simmer for 45 minutes. Meanwhile, I sautéed the meat and added the eggs, mixing to scramble, at the very end. After the soup had been simmering for 45 minutes, I tossed in the frozen veggies. Five minutes later I added the oatmeal, then the meat and egg mix. I let the whole thing simmer for about ten more minutes, then fished out the bones and strained the solids out of the broth. I'll blend the solids after they cool and add only as much broth as necessary to make it a good consistency. The rest of the broth will go in the freezer in ice cube trays (or muffin tins, I may be out of empty trays) lined with plastic wrap. That way I'll have some extra broth for when she decides she won't eat canned food but will only eat kibble if it doesn't taste like kibble You can add or take away or switch out anything she can't have, and if she'll eat whatever it is you make, you can get supplements to make it nutritionally complete. I based mine on a recipe I got from a vet, but tweaked it as she wanted me to use grass fed beef heart and supplements from her little shop, which wasn't going to happen. That's why mine is an addition to her regular food and not a complete diet!
  14. My terrier is fearful of dogs - she'll tolerate them if they're calm and respectful but if they're too excited or pushy she'll snap. I've learned her triggers and actively avoid them (even if it means going out of my way to avoid the excited dog who "just wants to say hi"). That, along with patience and positive reinforcement (treats or a petting party when she has a good interaction or doesn't snap during an excitable interaction), has helped immensely.
  15. I haven't had a bandage change before, but I would be totally fine with being charged for the knowledge and skills of the techs doing the change. $140, however, seems excessive.
  16. And the website is live! Come check out Laurel Creek Boutique. To celebrate the launch, I'm offering free shipping now through 8/29 - use the coupon code "daisy" and select free shipping at checkout. While you're there, check out the crochet hats! I'm always coming up with new designs and if you'd like something in a different color, let me know. Like I said earlier, now through 8/29 everything is a max of $20. The hats are custom made so they can be whatever color and size you need
  17. These are so cute! And such a great idea. I'm sick of jamming stuff in my pockets on walks if I ever have spare money, I'll be back!
  18. You think that's bad, I got a pitch from a pet store owner yesterday and nearly started laughing (I held it together long enough to get a free sample ). She was pushing Farmina N&D - GMO-free food that uses only ancient grains and antibiotic-free meat. Made in Italy! $20 for a tiny bag. Now, I'm all for antibiotic-free meats, and I know personally I love ancient grains, but Daisy is a dog who eats fluff off the floor. She's picky, but she's also happy if it tastes like meat. She'll eat the super fancy kibbles, but she still picks the meaty Purina One chunks out of her bowl and leaves everything else She's gotten pickier. It's probably my fault. When she was on antibiotics, I was mixing pieces of turkey into her bowl to get her to eat (because I didn't want to give her the drugs on an empty stomach). Now she won't eat unless there's an add-in, and even then she picks out the add-in and maybe eats a kibble or two. I tried foods with poultry fat or chicken meal to see if she'd be okay, and it didn't make her itchy like I expected - instead, her anal glands went into overdrive. She needed them expressed every week or two instead of every month. So we're moving back to chicken-free. Whole Earth Farms was a hit, so I'm going to get another bag of that. Anyone have experience with Evanger's? There's a meat lover's medley that I think she'd like (she seems to like rabbit). This Fromm recipe might also work for her... Looks like I'm dragging her to the pet store with me later They also carry a frozen raw food, so if all else fails I guess we could try that... Her appetite just seems to fluctuate so much. She'll eat great for a month and be up to a healthy 19 pounds (what she should weigh) then the next month, feeding her becomes a struggle and she barely eats anything and drops to 17 pounds. Then she'll eat again the month after that.
  19. Welcome to the launch of Laurel Creek Boutique! I hadn't planned on opening up shop quite so soon - I still have a lot left to set up! So for a limited time, while I put the finishing touches on my website and Facebook page, everything is $20. Collars? $20 each. Crocheted dog hats? $20 each. Crocheted human things like hat/scarf sets or baby blankets? $20! Daisy says thank you for reading and hopes you'll find something you just have to have. The Facebook page is up and running here. Photos of the ribbon for collars are all in the albums there: Collar Ribbon Holiday Ribbon Fandom Ribbon But here are a couple of my favorites! I'm working on getting good pictures of the hats - Daisy is my little model but she's only willing to pose for a moment before she demands the treat or she's outta there. I make Santa hats, mouse ears, pixie hats, and dragon spikes, and I'm always working on more designs. Have something in mind? Let me know! Everything is made to order so everything can be customized. I sell crochet things for humans too, but since this is the pet merchandise section I won't advertise those I'd appreciate it if you would stop on by and take a look around!
  20. Ziplocks or ice cubes! Can you blend everything up and spoon it into ice cube trays? Easy to serve!
  21. We're going to the rt tomorrow afternoon. I laid awake last night worrying about her leg!
  22. She's not - she just finished 10 days of clavamox for the bite wounds and it made her feel absolutely terrible. I know she probably needs them but we haven't been to the vet for this yet, so we don't have any. Sometime this week...
