  2. Oh, I'm so sorry. I haven't yet found my "heart horse" but reading this inspires me to not give up.
  3. OK, thanks all. I didn't really think that she's "getting back" at us - that was tongue-in-cheek I had thought it was really about the disruptions to her routine and she's likely somewhat anxious because of that. Her urine output & pattern is otherwise normal, so I'll make sure to give her some extra care and routine the next few weeks. We're not traveling again anytime soon, so that will help!
  4. Over the past year or so, we haven't been away much, or, if we have, we've been able to take Bella. In the past she's pretty happily gone to a kennel near our apartment which she seems to like, to the point of wanting to go in the door anytime we walk down the block. This month has probably been tough on her, though. I was home quite a bit between Christmas and New Year's Eve, at which point we left for 5 nights and she was in the kennel. We came home for a couple of days, then DH left for a week-long business trip and my mom came and stayed. Then DH came home, mom left, we were both home for a week and then away for another 4 nights. From this last trip we got home late Tuesday, so picked her up Wednesday morning. Ever since we got home from this last trip, she has been very shadow-y and clingy. She normally is pretty affectionate and wants to be in the same room, but this is exaggerated, to the point where we can't move without tripping over her. The thing that really is making me post here, however, is that last night before DH took her out for the last time, she squatted and peed on the bedroom rug right in front of me. She learned houstraining pretty quickly, and only peed in the apartment a couple of times right after she came home, mostly due to us not understanding her signals, so this is very, very unusual. No signs of a UTI which I do watch carefully for, no chewing or other destructive behavior, just this peeing on the rug. Hopefully it's only the once. I know I tend to anthropomorphize animals' behaviors a little (although I do know better) so I know that it's unlikely that she's "getting back" at us for going into the kennel. But, is it because her routine has been so drastically disrupted this month that she's unsettled? Any suggestions are helpful. Thanks!
  5. Oh, wow, I was about to post something similar. Here's the email I sent to my building's manager tonight - Good evening xxx- I wanted to express my concern over an incident with an unleashed dog. There is a woman with a brown "teacup" poodle who allows it to be off-leash with regularity in the building lobby and courtyard,. Normally I don't care to report things like this, but the dog is not under the owner's control and there was a problem tonight. After walking my dog this evening, I entered the lobby (at approximately 645 pm) and the poodle ran over and jumped on my dog. I believe it was with playful intentions, but this is not the first time the poodle has done this to my dog. My dog is a retired racing greyhound who so far has not shown any aggression to small breeds, but the potential for harm certainly exists with any dog jumping onto another. Also considering that my greyhound raced for several years, chasing a small, fluffy toy that looks remarkably like a teacup poodle, I am always on the lookout for problem situations with small dogs. I know there is a leash rule for the building and a reminder was sent out only a few weeks ago. I have no problem with small dogs in general, but do have a problem with dogs that are not in control of their owner, especially when there is the potential for harm. Please advise on what we can do to address this. Best, Sara I kid you not - we're in the middle of NYC and this woman allows her teacup poodle to run around the building lobby and courtyard off leash. The dog inevitably runs up to other dogs while the owner calls uselessly after her and picks her up with an "oh, she just wants to play". Well, lady, what if my dog doesn't understand that or doesn't want to play and defends herself?
  6. Bella has liked all fruit so far, except she wouldn't eat a grape that DH dropped (not a bad thing). Her favorite so far is definitely watermelon - look at these eyes
  7. .... that Bella WON'T eat!! Wait a minute - whoops. Momma spoke too soon I was starting to think there was something wrong with my girlie - I threw some green beans in with her kibble tonight and she'd spit out every one that she chomped on. So I'm thinking this will make a pretty funny photo to post. I went and checked her bowl again and it's completely clean.
  8. How lovely. I'm so glad that your reaching out was well received and this video is gorgeous.

  15. Bella did this when we first got her, for about three weeks. All of her stuffies, shoes, even the dustbuster It wore off after a few weeks, and she lost interest in stuffies. About 14 months later, she's now interested in stuffies again and we're coming home to them scattered around the apartment, as she's obviously been playing with them. So, yes, dogproof (put away anything you don't want her to have, even if you think she can't reach it), give her things that are hers (stuffies or other toys) and gently correct when you see her trying to get to something that is not hers. And have fun, enjoy, and take pictures

  17. LOL - this is kind of like our household. DH can't remember for the life of him what we feed or have fed in the past; he ranks he preference for Bella's food by the ease of picking up her poops We order online and it comes regularly every few weeks - he doesn't need to have a clue.
  18. Carrie, so sorry to see this and your blog post. What a treasure Lilac was - so grateful that you shared her with all of us.
  19. From one Bella momma to another - sure hope she's ok
  20. Oh, Judy, I'm so sorry - what a wonderful few years you gave her.
