  1. Some Greyhounds have more energy than others. Most of my personal Greys are active compared to most of the fosters that I have had. I have one that keeps up with a high energy Ibizan Hound all day and is crazy for lure coursing! She is ACTIVE! Most of my Greys can easily do 5+ mile hikes and enjoy them. I have one very lazy boy who does not enjoy going the distance like the others do. Part of it is that we worked them up to longer distances and part of it is that we are naturally drawn to more active hounds. My advice would be to tell the adoption group what you want. Greys will be lazier dogs that what most people are used to, but there is a spectrum of "active/lazy" in the breed. I am sure that there are many Greyhounds that would love your activity level.
  2. My girls are so bombproof that they work Renaissance Festivals happily. They put up with crowds of 15,000+ with kids flopping on them, hugging them too tight, etc for up to 10 hours a day, 2 days in a row. They are fine with cannons, explosions, gun shots, whips, crazy costumes, people of all types, ages, and energy levels, camels, geese, elephants, jousts, and the whole nine yards. They snooze through gun shots, and fire tricks. Neither seem to fear anything. One of them runs through life like a bull in a China shop and easily takes on anything ever thrown at her. Heck...she was doing tricks for the vet when they had her in for her spay surgery. They are fine with puppies, all types and ages of dogs, kids, walkers, wheelchairs, and storms. One of mine wants to play when storms are rolling in...I have to make her come inside. They dive headfirst into snow and handle trips like pros. Last year I was gone for over a week and the day after I returned we had 5 Ibizan Hounds that have never been here before, a mixed breed, and 3 strangers come stay with us for a couple of days and my girls didn't bat an eye. They did play a lot though! I also have a bombproof boy, a true, beyond textbook spook, and a shy boy. In fact, a friend wrote this about one of them, Lorelei, last year.
  3. Good tips! We go through about 35lbs week so food does not sit here long. We just cut the top off the bag and stick it inside a plastic container with a lid.
  4. He is gorgeous! Major congrats! I'm so happy that he found your home.
  5. My Lorelei did not run for almost the first year that I had her. Then, one day, she started running and I noticed that she ran rather oddly. Turns out that she has had some type of injury to her hips/back end before I got her. She does not have full range of movement. She runs a lot now but it is an odd gait. My others all ran pretty soon after I got them. I run around the yard with them, throw toys and balls, and encourage them to run together. My biggest runner is my Galgo though. He's my only one that will run alone just for the love of running. My Greys have to be chasing something or running with others.
  6. We give raw turkey necks, knuckle bones, and chicken leg quarters. They are much safer than cooked bones and really help the teeth.
  7. Cherry eye needs to be corrected surgically. Also, people who train protection dogs do not do what these people are doing. Protection dogs are well-socialized, stable dogs who remain in control and can tell the difference between a friendly stranger and the need to protect. These people are going to end up with an unstable, unsocialized mess of an animal who will not do what they want it to do. What a shame for the poor dog! How do they plan on a vet handling the dog is their own daughter can't?
  8. Oh Hilda, I am so sorry! She was much loved and will be missed. Run free Pipi-Francine!
  9. I spayed my girls at 17 months and 19 months. I wanted to be sure that the growth plates had closed and the girls had a chance to grow fully. Neither ever had a heat cycle.
  10. A friend of mine posted a blog about nail care/grinding. Her dogs are Dobes but the article is good. http://www.prairiedobecompanion.com/2011/02/nail-care-is-part-of-responsible-dog.html
  11. My Ibizan was able to get out of a snug WWW harness (in truth it was a bit small on him so it definitely was not too loose). Thankfully he's not my spook and he trotted right back to me, very proud of himself for being a houdini. The WWW harness is a great harness and I use it on some of the Greyhounds at times (like when we are hiking) but even a minute chance of being able to be pretzel-twisted out of is too much of a chance for me with a spook. I'm convinced that Spanish hounds are made out of rubber bands because they are so flexible. My vote is for the spook harness from Majestic Collars. It is what I have for Argos. Unless his chest shrinks that harness is not coming off. The extra strap is pretty much made out of peace of mind.
  12. I am so sorry for your loss of handsome Johnny. You are all in my thoughts. Run free Johnny.
  13. Dee, I am so sorry for your loss. She was a beautiful girl. Run free beautiful Abby.

    Martin

Holly, I know that your heart is broken right now. Please take comfort knowing that you gave Martin the best days of his life. With you he was loved, cherished, and treated like a king. I wish that you had more time with him but I truly believe that beautiful dog knew he was in his forever home. Run free Martin. May your body and spirit run free and happy knowing that you were loved and missed.
  15. Awful for multiple dogs! We bought 4 and put them in. They were rated for 2 large dogs each. They were stinky, attracted flies, and never decomposed the way they were supposed to and we followed the instructions exactly. DH ended up getting a post hole digger, digging out all the poop, and hauling it away. It was a huge waste of money and time. We have 7 dogs here (our 6 and a foster).
  16. Oh Ducky...I am so, so sorry. I always found your little girl inspiring. Such a tiny body to have such a huge heart.
  17. Hello from South Carolina! You have a beautiful fur family.
  18. Happy Gotcha Day Bool & Happy Birthday Dear. Hilda
  19. The people who say greys are quiet dogs have never met mine. They talk all the time and roo several times a day.
  20. Timmy broke his hock in his last race. He can easily do long walks and he plays and runs with the best of them. Steps bother him after a long while so we built him a ramp to go outside. He does start to limp more than normal if he is overdoing it and we know to stop him. He takes glucosamine as well.
