Thanks for the suggestions. Vanilla Bean, are you using the powder and oil or just the powder. If the claims come close to what they allege, I think that this would really work for my boy.

I have read about the beneficial properties of neem bark. My 8.5 YO grey has decent teeth, but not so good gums. I brush or use PetGel but the gums could still be better. I wanted to try the neem bark and when I search for it, all kinds of stuff comes up. It varies so much that I cannot tell what is good and what is not. Any suggestions? TIA

Yuck! We haven't had anything to that extreme, thankfully. After writing the last note, I went to check on him, much to his dismay, and things actually looked pretty good. I haven't put the 8.5 YO on antibiotics yet, just cleaned him up. I hope that you find the cause for your poor boy's problems. Give him a scritch for me!

I am currently dealing with this, but not to the same extent as you are. Please let us know the final outcome for your boy. My vet told me that it is normal and if you look at it under the scope you will always see some type of bacteria simply due to the "source location." He indicated that in extreme cases, they have surgically shortened the sheath which resolved the problem. That is something that I am not really interested in exploring at this time. We did get a 10 day course of Baytrill for our newbie with the same issues. The culture came back negative and his symptoms are gone. Now, my 8.5 YO is having the same issue. Good luck!

I don't post much on these threads because I have never had to experience any of what you are going through. However, I just wanted you to know that I really admire your outlook and perspective. It really does help, you know. When our son was in treatment, we made the best of a bad situation and he came through like a champ. Here's hoping that you will be able to celebrate your milestones with your fur boy as I have been able to do my skin boy.

I would be afraid (because that is the way that I am) to try to change too many things at once. If I did, I would not be able to figure out what did and what did not work. At this point, you are frantic (if you were me) and just want to get whatever you could into his mouth. If he likes (or will eat) grilled chicken, bring it on! I also would phyically put soft food into Dante's mouth (he lets me mess with it all the time) and hold his jaws together loosely. However, he would usually eat for me, but it would come out the other end in a huge messy pile and he wasn't able to get anything out of it. He was 7 pounds under his racing weight and the vet was concerned that he was going to deteriorate to the point of no return. He would swallow. He can't eat many cookies because grains make him worse. His treats are grain free and a small biscuit gets broken into pieces. With all my dogs, it is not the size of the treat, but the number. Much cheaper that way, too! I realize that I am kind of random here, but I am trying to give too much, too quickly, I think.

At some point, you might also want to add a probiotic (you can get it vitamin shops) to help him get back to baseline. As for timing of everything, I am no expert. Your vet might be able to give better instructions. I just know what worked for me.

I got them on-line and the size depends on how much powder he is to receive. You can also see if your vet or acupunturist has some? I also tried my local CVS. They could get them for me, but I was able to find them cheaper myself. Before I got the capsules, I would try to bury the powder in whatever I could and get it in him. Not fun. Have you tried pill pockets? I hollowed out whatever I could, but Dante is a chewer, not gulper. BTW, he weighs around 64 pounds. For Beau, I might start with cooked and try to see if he would switch. Dante is food motivated, so it wasn't difficult. He loves his chicken. One thing, though, watch fat intake and skin. Skin upsets his gut and he gets loose. He gets 12 oz per meal and gets fed twice a day. Right now, I would try to get him stablized and then go from there. I do feel for you though. It is so hard to watch this unfold and feel so helpless.

I had a grey on Tylan powder for quite a while for IBD. You can get it from your vet and also find it on-line much cheaper. Please note that it does work, but it is quite bitter. I also purchased gelatin capsules and made capsules for the dog. It looked like I was setting up shop, but you do what you have to do! I would make them in batches becuase he took a few twice a day with meals. I forget now the dose. He was able to take it that way. Some will accept it sprinkled on their food, but with a sensitive eater . . . I must admit, in our case it worked for several months and then he began sliding back. According to the vet, it was either time to try raw or undergo invasive testing. We went raw, have had great success and never looked back. He was just at the vet last week as moral support for our newbie and the vet couldn't believe how good and healthy he was! Far cry from when we first got him! I wish you much luck - been there, done that.
