  1. Kirkland brand food sold by Costco. It is a very good food, LOTS of people on this board feed it to their dogs, including us. It is sold in a Chicken & Rice and a Lamb & Rice formula, depending on what protein source your hound does better on. And you won't know that until you get the dog. Our Opie does not do well on a chicken based diet, gives him mooshy poos, but does great on lamb. AND, you can't beat the price - $23-25 (depending where you live) for 40 lbs!
  2. Wow, you must feed you pups REALLY early! We don't usually feed him before bedtime during the week, but Opie eats at the following times: 8-8:30 AM Breakfast 6:00 PM turkey Neck piece 8:00 PM Dinner Bed - 11-11:30 If DH's band plays on the weekend, then we get home at around 2:00 AM. Opie gets another walk, and at that point we do feed him again - maybe 1/2 cup kibble, some canned food, some dog cookies, or some combination. That way he will sleep in with us in the morning, sometimes in bed with us.
  3. Our grey Opie did the same thing - well, with the crate anyways. Chewed and bit his way out of the crate 3 days in a row. Although he never chewed anything else, all he wanted was his freedom and a chance to prove to us he was a good boy. We do however, babygate him out of the kitchen/dining area, as the garbage and our 2 birds are in there. He is fine with this. I would also recommend muzzling until you get past the chewing/destructive stage. Although taking shoes and any and all stuffies is not an unusual habit! Sometimes they just take them to their beds to "collect" them. Anyways, babygate or close doors to bedrooms, if you don't want him in there. Good Luck and let us know how it goes.
  4. I give it as needed. I gave it 2 months in a row when we had an infestation. Then I didn't dose for the rest of our (very short) summer. But then we don't have a lot of fleas up here in Seattle, at least where I live. But when he is going to be boarded, I will give it. I give 1 tab, for the large dog size.
  5. I just ordered some from Amazon also, and had free shipping cuz I ordered some other things too. Was very reasonably priced.
  6. Woo Hoo!! Vet was wrong!!! Go Charlie!! (I LOVE good news!)
  7. Thinking of you today. Hugs and prayers.
  8. Opie is still like this and we have had him for 3 years! BUT, we now redirect his enthusiasm - to get his stuffy. DH goes in first, Opie usually bolts into the garage (door is closed before we open door to house!) to make sure I am there too, while DH is yelling "Get the Puppet" (his word for stuffy) to Opie, who starts running around till he finds a suitable toy and jumps and flips it around. After a few minutes of this, he was sufficiently calmed down to come over to us for hugs and kisses. We too tried the turning the back, ignoring, etc. and I just ended up with cuts and bruises. So redirecting his exhuberance to his toys works for us.
  9. Prayers for your new girl. Try not to worry (easier said then done, I know!)
  10. Prayers for sweet Deeni - yes, keep us updates when you can.
  11. I agree about all the expensive dog kibble hype too. I feed Opie Kirkland Lamb and thankfully he does great on it. I went through a bunch of different food before the Kirkland, when we first got him, including Taste of the Wild Bison. Expensive as heck, and after a few months that wasn't agreeing with him. Switched to Kirkland, and that is the food he gets, and loves it. What did all the dogs of the world do 20+ (I'm just guessing here) years ago before the designer dog foods? Were they all dropping dead from the horrible food they ate? I had lots of dogs, including an Afghan, who ate grocery store food, and basically whatever was on sale (of the 2-3 that they ate). And my Afghan was almost 16 when he passed, and I had some shepard mixes that lived til 15. My black lab, who ate grocery store food until her last 4-5 years, when my son was working at Petsmart and convinced me she needed a "better" food. She was 1 month shy of her 17th birthday. Point is, whatever your dog does the best on, that is what you should feed it.
  12. So very sorry to hear this about your boy Frost. May he have an easy journey to the bridge, and a lot of prayers for you.
  13. Welcome, and glad to hear your boy is in good health. There are a number of people on here that have or had senior greys, and one was almost 20! Made the news and the papers and all. I'm sure they will all chime in.
  14. Opie is a face rubber too. Every morning he comes and wakes me up by looking directly in my face and then rubbing all over my pillow until I wake up and start petting him. When we come home from work and sit down at DH's computer (our ritual when we walk in the door) to say hello to him he rubs all over my chest and my armpits!
  15. Add my thoughts and prayers for you and Patton tomorrow.
  16. I used that Salmon oil and do order it from Costco. One time they had it in the store. Opie has a beautiful coat, the vet always comments on his fur, and he even has a very fuzzy butt!
  17. Congratulations Summer! Good Girl! Even I start worrying after 7 hours, and our Opie is a great "holder". We are rarely gone that long, but every once in a great while.
  18. Our boy doesn't go out right after eating either, he goes to lay down ad "rest" after the exertion of eating! Our schedule is: Between 7-8 - Morning long walk, pee and poop 8:30 ish - breakfast 10 ish - another short pee walk before leaving for work. Betweeen 4 & 6 (depending on our work schedule) - another long walk, poop and pee Turkey neck snack immediately upon return 8 ish - Dinner 11-12 - Last walk, always pee, sometimes poop (yep, our Opie love to poop!)

    Martin

My heart hurts reading about Martin and Rachel.
  20. Comfortis believer here too. It made my horrible flea infestation I had earlier in the year go away. I used the Adams Flea spray on the bedding. And vacuum like a crazy person for a couple weeks - every day. I would never use bombs in my house, but that is just me. If it is that toxic you have to leave, nothing will convince me if I wait 2 hours all is well.
  21. We have a LARGE grey also - Opie raced at 88 lbs. He now weighs 94-95 lbs, so 6-7 lbs gain. I think he is perfect like this, still has nice tuck, 3 ribs, and hipbones showing.

    Ryan

So very sorry.... Run free sweet Ryan
  23. I am so VERY sorry to read this. Hugs to you both.
  24. Agree with should probably be OK. Opie ate a whole turkey carcass from the garbage (He NEVER goes in the garbage) when we were out of the room last Thanksgiving. We immediately gave him the rest of the rolls from the dinner! LOL. He was fine, did have some of the big D for a few days, but nothing after that. Lets us know if everything "comes out" OK!!
