  1. Emily I am so sorry to hear of Riley's passing. I know you knew it was coming, eventually, but it doesn't ease the pain when that day finally arrives. He is now pain free, and running like a puppy. Hugs to you.
  2. I am so very sorry for your sudden loss - what a horrible shock. Run free sweet Chance.
  3. We keep our house at 65. In the evening, if it feels chilly, I supplement with wood heat or a room space heater. At night I have the thermostat set at 60. Not sure if it really gets down to that temp or not, but heat does come on in the AM to warm up. Anyways, Opie sleeps in fleece house coat type jammies and he is very comfortable. I have flannel ones when it is a bit warmer. Back in December, when we had our real cold spell up here, Opie was still wearing the flannel jammies. He was very restless at night, digging in his bed. I gave him a big quilt to snuggle in and put on the warmer fleece jammies, and he has been snug as a bug in a rug (or a greyhound in jammies in a bed!). If your pups are sleeping, and not seeming unfortable (read - COLD!) by digging or being restless, or waking you up (another thing Opie was doing - Mom, I'm cold!) then they are probably OK. If you have the jammies, put them on and see if they seem to like them, and sleep better.
  4. I had been following Smiley's story, and was so very sorry to read about what happened. You and your DH made the decisions you did based on the best info from the best Greyhound drs. around. Smiley is now pain free, and I know he knew how much you loved him. Again, so very very sorry it turned out this way.
  5. Opie sleeps in our room, on his bed, next to our bed. No room for a 95 lb male in a queen bed with 2 humans! When its time for bed, he goes in there and lays down. He always has to be wherever we are. He is allowed up for huggies and snuggles in the AM when we wake up. He jumps in between us and usually lays with his head on my chest. Sometimes we will all fall back to sleep for a few minutes. But I almost always end up getting squeezed off the bed as he tries to spread out and get more comfortable!
  6. My boy Opie knows some commands, and listens fairly well. He knows "back up", which is very handy as we have a small kitchen, and he is a very big boy!. He usually comes to me when I call him at the dog park. His best command is "Wait". When I am preparing his food, he has to wait until I give the command to come eat. Once I was talking to DH, and forgot to tell him to eat, and he just stood there, drooling and licking until I realized what I had done (or NOT done)!! Poor baby, when I finally said OK, get your dinner, he bolted over there!!
  7. Well this happened to me on Thanksgiving. Opie, my boy who never goes in the garbage, took out the turkey carcass and ate the whole thing! I came here for advice, and I fed him bread and watched him. He seemed fine at first, but then the next day had the Big D and threw up a giant piece of potatoe! After all that, he was just fine, but I learned to watch my garbage can from now on! I'm sure your pups will be fine, but just watch them and do expect some gastric intestinal disturbance tomorrow of some sort!
  8. I have a playful biter too. We pretty much had stopped it by redirecting to his toys. It happens a lot when we come in the door so we just tell him to go get the puppet (our word for his stuffed toys), and off he goes with it in his mouth, running. Sometimes if he is excited and knows we are going somewhere he will air snap, and once in a while bite at us. I do what has been suggested, stop, turn the other way and walk away. He gets no attention until he settles down. There is no need for collar jerking, they get it pretty quickly.
  9. Opie (Wine Sips Away) raced at 88, and now weights 95 lbs. He is very tall, and extremely LOOOONNNNG! He is my big sweetums.

    My Boy T

I am just reading this now, and please know how very very sorry I am about T.
  12. Well, just wanted to report that after a bunch of stinky gas today, I think the carcass just came out! DH just walked him, and said the poo was real runny with chunky things in it. I will really have to watch my garbage eater from now on!
  13. Well, thanks so much for all your replies. So far, so good. He had a poop before bed last night, and another one around 6:30 this AM (we were up early for Black Friday shopping ) Poo was a bit soft, but that's it. He ate his breakfast with gusto, and has been begging for treats since we have been back. No signs of distress at all. Well, now, I guess I have to really watch that garbage can - now that he has tried it and found delicious treats inside!
  14. Just hand fed him a roll, and he is contentedly sleeping on the couch. I will watch and listen for any unusual signs. I am expecting the big D tomorrow at the very least. Bad greyhound!!
  15. Opie has never taken anything out of the garbage can, so this has never been an issue. I guess today, Turkey Day, just got the better of him. DH was taking a shower, and I was on my computer waiting so I could get in the shower. I was just getting out when I heard DH yell, Oh No!! I come running, Opie was taking a burnt roll to his bed. We both ran to the garbage can, and there was stuff all over the floor, and NO turkey carcass, just the metal piece that holds the legs together!! Since he has already eaten it, and not choked on anything, should I be worried?? Guess we will have to keep the garbage closed from now on.
  16. Prayers for Star for a successful surgery - may you have many more years together.
  17. Hugs, and I too will be thinking of you tomorrow. It is so painful, but it is our last gift to our beloved pets. I have done this twice. The first time was for our Shepard mix Valkery, and was at the vets, and it was my son and me. At first he didn't want to go, but I said I could not let her go alone, and then he wanted to come too (I think he was 14 at the time). The vet let us stay in the room with her afterwards for as long as we wanted. The next time was a few years ago with our akita lab mix, LaTanya. This time we did it at home. I was married again this time, and my DH took such good care of LaTanya during the last year of her life, hand feeding her, changing diapers, etc. The vet came, and we had her on her blanket for the 2 shots. We had planned to bury her in our backyard, so we had the grave dug. THAT was very hard, DH digging a bit every day for a week, in preparation. Afterwards the vet left us both crying on the floor with La Tanya. DH petted her feet - he had never touched her feet before, as she had arthritis so bad we couldnt touch them. I cut some fur off, and we have that in a bag, and her collar, draped over a picture of her in our living room. Oh, and our parrot did witness this, and as we carried her outside to bury her, we stopped at the cage to let him see her one last time. To this day, he still calls her name every now and then. So be brave, and you have all of our support. It is soo hard, I know.
  18. Prayers coming from the PNW - Come on Lexi!! Fight!!

    Sahra's Gone

So very very sorry for your loss, and I totally understand how difficult it is to talk about it. Run free Sahra.
  20. This is so sad to read. I am so very sorry you did not have more time. Cora was a beautiful girl, and you loved her so.
  21. I too have used the dog diapers with depends pads in them for our old lab mix girlee the last year or so of her life. They worked pretty well, just make sure to have more than one of the diaper holders so one can be washed. If she pooped, it was usually a mess though, but that didn't happen too often. She was almost 17 when we sent her to the bridge, so she was incontinent if she fell asleep. As long as she was awake she was fine. As far as clean up, don't waste money on the pet wipes, they are too expensive. Use baby wipes, much cheaper, and if they are good enough for a baby's gentle parts, they are fine for a dog.
  22. It also works well with humans with IBS primarily constipation! Sorry I couldn't resist, I swear by this stuff! I hope you find something to help your beautiful Ben with his problem. I truly sympathize with him!
