Mazie's Mri Is Done

Based on the X rays and physical exam it looks like Mazie has Cauda Equina Syndrome. Basically there is some compression on her nerves somewhere between L4 and S1 which is causing the lameness.

Next step MRI. IF MRI confirms this. . .we have two options

surgery or conservative therapy (keeping her comfortable)

This is the surgery she would have (this is a client of the surgeon)

Our other option is conservative therapy which will consist of anti-inflammatories, pain meds, severely restricted activity. . no jumping on couch or bed, and being crated 80% of the time, and this won't guarantee that it won't get worse. As the nerve continues to degrade she may lose bowel and bladder control as well as the use of her hind end.

Wow. . .what a visit!

So does anyone know what the going rate for an MRI is?

Last July, we were given the option of a MRI to rule out a brain tumor as the cause of seizures in our Lab Cecily... at that time, I seem to recall that it would be at least $1000.00. We opted not to have it done as she was 13 years old and it wouldn't have changed our course of treatment.

Oh, and that was a the Internal Medicine Specialist in San Diego.

After many tears a vey long talk, DH and I decided that we will do anything it takes within reason to give Mazie a chance at a normal life. I didn't realize how much that pup has touched my heart until we were faced with the issue of doing what's best for her. . .even if it was euthanasia. I came home last night and she snuggled up next to me with her head on my baby belly (I'm :preggo) and I told DH that we had to give her a chance.

We have a MRI scheduled for the 23rd, and are prepared to go ahead with surgery. The vet said that we could wait a few weeks as long as we keep her quiet, comfortable, and pain free. .. so we are taking that time to get our ducks in a row. Mazie would have no life being crated 80% of the time, and the thoughts of my life without her was way to unbearable. She's young, has a zest for life, and she deserves a chance!

Any good thoughts you can muster for my Moosie-girl would be appreciated!

I guess we were posting at the same time.

I'm happy to hear you're going to go ahead with it. She's so young, and I agree she deserves every chance.

We had a similar situation with our then-almost-two year old cat. The other cat (who hated him) slashed his Achilles' tendon....three options were do nothing, amputate the leg, or do the surgery to fix it. We fixed it.

You do what you've got to do. :colgate

We will be keeping you and your girl in our prayers and will light a special candle for her every Sunday morning until she's back on her feet and comfortable. You sure can tell how much you love her. You and your DH will also stay in our prayers.
