Guest grey4life
I adopted my first greyhound, Starla, 4.5 yrs ago. Since then she has brought numerous fosters, other greyhounds, wonderful friends and lots of joy to my life. I cannot imagine my life without her and my true love and dedication for greyhounds! We have since adopted 6 more greyhounds (mostly seniors) and fostered at least 100. Starla has always lived up to her beautiful tuxedo mannerisms! If she was not roaching she was chasing her tail, biting her legs in play, singing, rooing, playing, irritating her brother, etc. Starla ALWAYS brought a smile to everyone's face with her silly antics! Even at Barnes & Noble while doing a meet & greet she would roach on the tile floor! She will always be one of a kind! In Nov 2004 she was diagnosed with Osteo at 8 yrs old. Within a few days she had her right front leg amputated. Her recovery was amazing and much better than I could have ever anticipated. Her life as a tripod seemed no different than she was before! We opted not to do Chemo mainly due to the cost but also we didn't think she would want to go through it. About 2.5 months later we heard of an Oncologist in Ohio that was donating the chemo drugs so we decided to give it a try (thank you Jeannie - fellow GPA friend and GT'er!). She successfully had 4 chemo treatments with relatively no side effects. On the day of the 5th treatment (less than 2 weeks ago) I asked them to run a chest x-ray because I thought she was slowing down and weaker. The x-rays revealed numerous lesions in her lungs so we did not go through with the last treatment. We knew our days were numbered... Last weekend we had a "Celebration of Life" party for her. She and 33 of her greyhound buddies all got together for a "Hello Kitty" themed party in her honor. It was awesome!!! She spent 90% of the time upside roaching on the couch but she loved every minute of it. A few days went by and we knew it was time to let her go. We made the appt for today after the vet's office closed. Last night when I got home from work she was much worse and we had to medicate her throughout the evening to keep her comfortable. My husband and I laid in bed with her and gave her peanut butter ice cream, fresh chicken, hot dogs and whatever else I could find that she would eat (this was over about 18 hours don't worry!). She loved the attention and told us she was ready by the look in her eyes... Starla died in my lap just a few short hours ago with her daddy and her brother (Jasper) by her side. Jasper has never spent one night without his sister (we adopted him at 11 weeks old). He is having a very hard time coping with her illness and now loss. Please send lots of white light, good thoughts and prayers to our Star-Star! She will live on forever in our hearts and our memories. We will all miss her dearly! Thank you!
