PatricksMom
Henry's a bit off this evening--he tends to have periodic stomach problems but he won't settle down and he's straining when outside without actually pooping this evening. He's climbing on furniture and whatnot so while uncomfortable I don't think he's in actual pain. His stomach is a bit sensitive to the touch but not at all rigid and he has some gas sounds that are present but not as loud as Leo's (they both ate at the same time, but Henry ate a bit less). Thoughts? The evet is about 45 minutes away--I'll take him if he needs to go of course or if he gets worse, but otherwise I hate to put an uncomfortable dog in the car for that long. I'm going to take him for a little bit of a walk, sometimes that settles his system down, and check back in. Quote Beth, Petey (8 September 2018- ), and Faith (22 March 2019). KF_in_Georgia
I don't like the sound of "straining ... without pooping". If he doesn't get unplugged on this walk, I'd load him in the car and start for the e-vet. If he gets noisy in the car and seems in distress, you might be able to find a place to get him out of the car (look for "islands" in shopping center parking lots--usually decent lighting there--and put some sort of cover on the car seat, just in case). If things loosen up on the way to the e-vets, then you can make a judgment on whether to go on or go home. My dogs rarely get sick during regular office hours, and the e-vet here actually is closer than my own vet, so I've been quick to go to the e-vets. But I've never been sorry I took a dog in, even if it wound up not being life-or-death. If all is well, you and Henry can go home and get some sleep. If you both stay home, odds are neither of you will sleep well until he manages to poop. If he doesn't poop soon and you decide he needs the e-vet, you'll kick yourself for not going earlier. Time4ANap
Anytime I hear gas sounds, I usually will give a Gas-X. Gas bubbles are really uncomfortable and may be straining to try and eliminate the gas. When did he last poop? Is he on schedule other than the straining that he's doing now? If he hasn't gone today, then definitely the E-Vet. if he is otherwise on schedule, but gassy, I would try the Gas-X, then observe and decide. Usually within 10 -15 minutes of giving a Gas-X - i hear a big belch from Rocket. Quote Camp Broodie. The current home of Mark Kay Mark Jack and Gracie Kiowa Safe Joan. PatricksMom
A mile walk later, Henry is happily walking and peeing on everything in sight. No straining or attempting to poop. He pooped normally in this morning, he just seems a bit off and DH woke me up to say he had been straining in the yard. He's done this before, just not in the middle of the night, of course. PatricksMom
Henry slept like a rock through the night (on top of me so I know he wasn't waking up), this morning isn't straining, just has zero interest in pooping. Marking, yes. I just got back from our vet. The good news from the xrays/rectal exam: an empty stomach (not surprising since he didn't eat breakfast), a little excess gas in the small intestine but nothing unusual, normal looking stool in the large intestine, with nothing to suggest any blockage. The bad news: he still won't poop and is on the agitated side and his stomach/intestinal region is sensitive to palpatation. I went ahead and had her give him barium, he goes back for x-rays this afternoon and tomorrow morning, to rule out the possibility he ate string or a sock or something that isn't showing up on the standard xrays. He's otherwise seems fine, vitals are all normal, but something feels wrong to me. Of course its Henry, he gets finicky about stuff, and he could just be being weird. Will keep you posted. Remolacha
Hope it turns out to be nothing! I always keep some Gas-X on hand as Fletcher's IBD could give him gas, usually in the middle of the night Sounds like that may not have been Henry's problem this time, but it can't hurt. PatricksMom
Henry pooped! The vet would still like to do the xray, in case there's something trapped in the small intestine, but this is a good sign. Also a reminder I know way more about my dogs' bathroom habits than mine. PatricksMom
Arg, xray this morning looked good, they're going to do one more this afternoon just to make sure. But he doesn't want to eat, last night he was starving, but I wasn't allowed to give him a fool meal, breakfast today, not so interesting.
