fliggie
I was reading the older dog thread and thinking about our Sam, who is hovering near the 13 year old mark. This last year, his arthritis has gotten really much worse, but we have a very good, grey-savy vet who has provided a nice medication regimen that puts a little zoom back into his day. Even so, he still has issues. In the past week or two, we noticed it was taking him far longer to finish peeing--in fact, he'd finish peeing and then he would dribble for another 30 seconds or so. This is new. Worried it was medication-related, I called the vet. In the meantime, on Monday, a large, squishy lump literally popped out on his side. I thought, "oh no, mast cell tumor". We went yesterday and I was expecting the worst, but came out with the best--after aspirating, no cancer cells, no infection were found. She thinks it has to do with some nipple duct issue. We'll keep a close eye on this. Yay, no tumor! Next, urinalysis--clean--no infection there. However, she closing examined the penis, or at least tried (poor doctor, poor Sammie...). She decided to further clean when she took him back to aspirate the swollen area. The doctor came back in and said the amount of clogging--smegma--around the penis was something she'd never seen before. When they finally got the penis to come out of its sheath, the gunk that was literally flowed out. She said it probably will be quite the relief and may be because he seems to have a rather small opening to his penile area. I felt so bad! It wasn't red, he wasn't licking it anymore than any other area...ouch Lo and behold, no dribble. A good night at the vets, albeit a bit more of an exam than he is used to!
