Guest FrankieWylie
Or not even accident prone, but always seems to have to go to the vet! Poor Magic, our boy who just got his stitches out and his gooey eyeball checked now has a huge and swollen front paw/lower leg. Thanks goodness out vet has regular hours on Saturdays. Sambuca
Me me me! I just had to bring Bu to the vet for a laceration IN his ear. It wasn't on the ear flap, it was inside his ear. Even the vet was surprised at that one.
BellaBean
I swear every time Gigi comes inside from playing in the backyard she has a new cut or scrape in her leg/paws. Thank god she's young and healthy so they heal up quickly with only one vet visit so far! She's even started hiding them for me if she does have one somewhere because she knows mom will break out the peroxide! Guest FrankieWylie
Crap. I can't edit the title on my phone. But I'm laughing at "probe" Sherry is our girl who is always scratching her self out in the yard. She runs like a hooligan out there. But Magic, oh Magic. This is our third vet visit in 2 weeks. Riverhound
There's always someone wrong with one of my dogs. Brees ran into a bush right before Dewey. Stitches. She got a cat the day after the hurricane. Staples and an abscess. Joe now has a corneal ulcer -- but he timed it well. I was able to take him in for the recheck and get Brees's staples out in one visit! And there's often a cut toe or gimpy leg to worry over, just so I don't get bored I guess! OwnedBySummer
Had a laugh at the accidental probe. That brought up some interesting visuals! And yes, I call Summer accident prone. If there is blood at a greyhound playdate, even if there's 25 dogs there, I look for Summer and check her over first. Chances are she's the injured one. At home, I have high-gloss white and blue tiles on her way in and out the back door -- they quite nicely show the random blood drops from whatever is that day's back yard injury-du-jour. On a side note, I am really good at bandaging now. I can even keep a bandage on her tail! Edited November 17, 2012 by OwnedBySummer Quote Lisa B. silverfish
Unfortunately, yes. Jeffie is THE most accident-prone hound I've ever met. We've only had him about 18 months and the list of injuries is impressive. I should have been warned when Sue (his fosterer) said 'sorry about the scrapes on his head, he ran into a bush'. That is SO Jeffie! Within a fortnight of coming to our house he'd got an impact fracture of a metatarsal. Yep, an impact fracture. I think our vet thought we'd been beating him up, but our best guess is that he ran into a solid wood feeding stand (the one in the picture)! Next up was this - He ran into a brick wall coming in from the garden. OK, it was dark, but we have automatic lighting and it works very well. Yes, he still had the broken metatarsal when he did that - and there's a third wound you can't see, under his tail. The two under the dressings you can see were crescent-shaped, and about 4 inches long. What next? I can't remember the order, but he's torn a dewclaw, broken a toe (subsequent amputation, because he doesn't do things by half), picked up numerous small scrapes and cuts, and mysteriously sliced both his back legs below the hock, nobody knows how or on what. I suppose it doesn't count, but I quicked him one day and he would NOT stop bleeding. I tried the styptic powder at him, then took him to the vet after about twenty minutes of him bleeding on the carpet. Took five of the heavy duty styptic sticks they use before she could stop it, too. Guest FrankieWylie
Oh my goodness! He has Magic beat, for sure LOL! They are at the vet now, thinking it's a puncture wound of some sort. Haven't gotten the official word yet. Not long after we got him, Magic did run straight through a bramble type bush playing with his buddy the boston terrier. Since then we've cleared out the brush and bushes in the back yard
vjgrey
Yep. That's totally Diamond. I'm sure I'm forgetting something here, but she: - Tore a dew claw off by slipping down into a random hole on a walk - Tore a dew claw off by stepping between stairs (stairs have since been fixed so that can't happen) - Tore most of the pad of her foot off while running in my parents' fenced acre - Took a tumble while running in the same yard. She was basically fine but VERY bruised. Looked just awful. - Tore a ligament in her foot/toe while playing with Cash in our back yard - Somehow pulled a muscle in her neck. Not sure how, but that was an expensive one involving x-rays and specialists Quote Valerie w/ Cash (CashforClunkers) & Lucy (Racing School Dropout)Missing our gorgeous Miss Diamond (Shorty's Diamond), sweet boy Gabe (Zared) and Holly (ByGollyItsHolly), who never made it home. KF_in_Georgia
Once, Sam cut his foot to the bone, and I took him to the ER for staples. Monday, the ER faxed details to Sam's regular vet. The reg vet's first reaction was, "How on earth could any dog do this?" Then, "Oh, wait. It's Sam." Sam put his foot through my living room window once when he saw a cat outside. ("High prey" doesn't begin to describe him.) And he's been known to run into trees. And walls. Inside walls, like in the dining room. But Sam has an edge over Jeffie up there in #7. He seems to bounce. Except for the foot thing, all Sam's owwies have been treatable at home. brindlehound
My Magic is a bit injury prone too. It seems that almost every year right before GIG he comes up with something. This year it was an ear infection and then lyme disease. He's had infections, soft tissue injury, been attacked. KF_in_Georgia
Off topic, here--but how old is Jeffie? Has he had his eyes checked thoroughly? And his night vision? And peripheral vision? My Sam's "contact" injuries have mostly been because he doesn't watch what he's doing. He'll be watching another dog when he smacks into a tree or the dining room wall. His foot injury was a skid on the carpet where he wedged his foot under some metal and cut himself; and the foot-through-the-window was when his excellent vision spotted a cat two feet away from the glass. But Sam tends to hurt himself by not looking--rather than not seeing, if you know what I mean. This question only occurred to me because when you list all his injuries out, so many are collisions. Guest borzoix4
One of our little ones ( T'Pol ) - it feels like she is! I swear- this little girl has too much bravado for her younger abilities. So far- she has crashed into a bush running too fast and not stopping. Then jumped up too many steps clocking her knee in the process. And last- running in the yard being silly on frost covered glass. While no major injuries Thank God, I am hoping if nothing else being 4 months old, maybe its a learning process that in certain situations to be uh more .. uh ... careful... silverfish
Off topic, here--but how old is Jeffie? Has he had his eyes checked thoroughly? And his night vision? And peripheral vision? This question only occurred to me because when you list all his injuries out, so many are collisions. Well, it's not really off-topic, since people are looking in this thread for 'accident prone', which as you point out could be due to failing sight. But yes. I've had Jeffie's eyes checked by a vet (who says that yes, he can see - not perfectly, but adequately), and I've done the usual checks at home (and continue to do them, since he is 10 1/2 years old). He watches a tissue fall from the landing and tracks its passage, and ducks out of the way of a tossed treat (still hasn't got the hang of opening his mouth to actually catch them, but he does see them coming). He'll also perk up at the sight of objects on the pavement up ahead, stuff like that - and to be honest, he'd have had to have been pretty much totally blind not to see that wall - which hadn't moved since the last hundred times he passed it. And though that was at night, our automatic garden lighting is pretty darned good; there's a string of quite bright lights at intervals all the way up the garden, and there's one of them each side of that wall. Like Sam, Jeffie's problem is one of not looking. I took him to agility classes for a while, and at first he was bumping into everything and hitting the low jumps with his back feet. I'm talking about 10-15 inches off the ground, nothing major. Everyone would laugh because he'd pick up his front feet beautifully to hop over the jump, and then just seemed to forget he had to do the same with his back legs and they'd crash through it and knock the pole down. He did learn though, and by the end of two courses he was a LOT better. He'd pick up his feet properly, and pole-weave properly, and turn better etc. But he still bumps into things when he's distracted, and he has a permanent 'puppy' mentality. He didn't get fostered until he was nine and then some, so everything is a distraction to Jeffie! KF_in_Georgia
None of my dogs has ever understood that their back feet are their responsibility. I'll sit out on the curb with a soft drink in good weather and watch birds, squirrels, people coming home from work. I'd set my Diet Coke on the pavement, and the dogs would carefully step over it with their front feet. Then they'd drag their back feet into the can every time, and they'd give me a look to say, "What did you do, mom? How did that happen?" (It's amazing that they step in poop as seldom as they do. But if they're going to step it in, it's with their back feet.) Living in a condo is one reason my dogs get dinged less often than most dogs. My guys are leash-walked on every trip outside. Sometimes, I'm sorry they don't have a fenced back yard to run in. But that would also be a fenced back yard to meet cats in, step in holes in, plow into fences in, smack into trees in, etc. (Sam's tree-collision happened in his first foster home. They were looking for a dog to do agility, and Sam quickly convinced them they had the wrong boy. That was more than ten years ago.)
