Think Good Thoughts For Fixer

Good and bad news from the vet. She thinks this has something to do with his back and spine. She listened to his heart for a long time, and everything was OK there. The range of motion in his legs and feet is really good. As soon as she moved to his back (towards his tail), she pressed a little and his back end crumbled. It happened every time. We've all noticed that his gait is slightly off too. She's going to call a specialist tomorrow and get some ideas. The X-rays of his spine were OK and didn't show anything. She's thinking it's something within the spinal column (which doesn't sound good). Fixer had a really bad racing injury right along his spine, so this may be related.

We're also waiting on blood work.

Here's a good picture of Fixer's scar and old injury area. It was pretty much any place she pressed behind the scar that made him go down. The injury was healed when we got him. We were told that he came out of a starting gate too early, but who knows.

I'll update again once we hear back from her tomorrow.

I read your original post this morning while I was in a meeting (supposed to be paying attention!!!) and couldn't respond. Lots of good thoughts coming Fixer's way from us in Powhatan. That's a nasty little scar he has there. I had no idea he was 10....I must have been thinking about Uri. Anyway, hope all the reports are good and it was just an "episode" that won't repeat itself.

I don't know what's going on with Fixer. :(

Last night, he went upstairs and suddenly I heard the GSOD and he kept it up for as long as it took me to get upstairs (a pregnant girl rushing anywhere is not a pretty sight! :blush ) Anyway...I get up there and he's kind of holding his front right leg up a little. I check him out all over, rub his leg and shoulder to see if anything was tender, and nothing. He walked a few steps and then seemed to be fine.

Anxious to hear from the vet and talk things through again.

Maybe that was "just" a cramp? I hope so :goodluck

I am sorry about his spine issues :( I am sending lots of good thoughts and hope that the specialist comes up with some answers.

Did the vet think it might be lumbosacral stenosis? Pretty common in older hounds. And picking up his front leg makes me think it might be his neck. Did the vet check him out there? Neck injuries (like a muscle pull) can cause the GSOD & take a good long while to heal. And even LS, while painful, is not the most horrible, baddest thing you might be thinking of. Best wishes for Fixer.

He may have muscle cramps/soreness in other areas because his spinal problems are throwing his normal movement off. I hope it turns out to be something treatable. My first grey had lower back/spinal problems, and a couple of times, she couldn't stand or walk. Steroids and pain meds got her going short term, and acupuncture really helped her over the long haul.
