Guest Amberm5151
My greyhound is 7 years old and 2 years ago (2009) we had blood work done cause we thought he may be diabetic as he was showing symptoms of that. The vet came back and told us it was acute renal failure, in 2010 i took him in for his blood test and they said he was normal.... I am worried to put him under for his dental because of the changing in his blood work. lately he has been not wanting to eat his food unless i add water to it, it does not have to make the food soft just wants the water. today i came home and he had a pee accident in his kennel and a runny nose. No temperature and no other symptoms of anything. He sleeps just as much as he did before and still gets excited when we mention walking or food! Have a call into the vet for the morning just was hoping to seek help here too!
TheFullHouse
I'd have the blood work done again and see if it's the same as the last time. There are other diseases that can cause dogs to want to drink tons of water besides diabetes. I'd start with another check on the blood work before deciding to do anything. Sometimes people are not aware when getting a blood test with their dog, that like people, they need to have a empty stomac. And some readings will look differnt in greyhounds. greysmom
There are also other reasons for kidney values to be off. Depending on your relationship wih this vet, and your confidence in his familiarity with Greyhound blood values and diseases, you might want to consider seeking another opinion with another (greyhoudn savvy) vet. Not saying your vet is bad, just that another opinion might be worthwile. tbhounds
You need to run more blood work. I would also bring in a first morning urine sample to your vet.
AEB
Hi- I'm new here too. We lost our Sadie in July and she had kidney issues that we battled for a couple years but probably ultimately lost to a form of intestinal/stomach cancer. I agree that if kidney issue are suspected you need to look at urine and have a complete blood panel done. Also, check out the articles on the OSU Greyhound program website about what is normal for a grey as to kidney values, etc. Don't be afraid to discuss the differences in greys with your vet. I have, more than once, shown veterinarian written articles to my vet that involved greyhound specific topics pertaining to Sadie's situation. Good luck with everything. Guest Amberm5151
Today i got home and he had a poop accident in the kennel but decided to eat it. The nose was better today and I put in the humidifier so that has helped. When we had the first blood work done i didn't want to believe it so the next one we did we had another vet do it. He has an apt for his dental cleaning and they will do another blood panel beforehand to be sure he can go under. I just worry about him, his weight fluctuates between 59-65 every year and we feed the same food and the same amount,
AEB
I'm sorry. It's hard when you know things aren't right but don't know what's wrong. If there is a question about his result/putting him under you could look into having his teeth scaled without anesthesia. There are people that travel around and do scalings. In the last couple years for Sadie we would not put her under and I scaled her teeth myself. It did help quite a bit. I'm sure a pro would have done a better job. Guest Amberm5151
So we went to the vet and got our results back, his kidney's are getting worse. He was diagnosed in 2008 with kidney failure. He has now stopped eating and the vet said it could be the antibiotic he was just put on for an infection. We will know for sure tomorrow if he eats after being off it for 24 hours, if not then it the kidney's. I have bought wet food for him to try and get him to eat something. I hope he eats tomorrow but if not I know I will have to decide what I am going to do
