Help For Pain

Recommended Posts

While I was away at Mountain Hounds Nina had a bad back episode. DH gave her a tramadol one day and she was semi-OK until 2 days later when she really screamed. He then gave her valium.

I gave Nina half a 5mg valium last night(seemed to tolerate it OK without any bad reactions). A few hours later gave her half a 50mg tramadol. She was able to sleep. This morning she screamed when first trying to (reluctantly) get up. Her walk to the backyard was slow and uncomfortable but she did take a long pee. She has been eating OK thru this and last night I brought her water. She has not yelped again but is obviously uncomfortable.

I will call the vet this morning and ask about how much of the valium and tramadol I can give her (original prescription was for Gracie @76 lbs, Nina weighs @39 lbs).

I want to give her more tramadol this morning and maybe another small dose of the valium but I do not want it to interfere with whatever the vet might give next.

Would this be prednisone?

At a previous vet visit the vet said to call if Nina continued to have problems. With Nina's other health problems (liver, heart and more) she should not go under anesthesia for xrays. We are 2 hours from a holistic vet so no accupuncture (which my vet had suggested but doesn't do).

If I could even get her into the car today I do not think she could tolerate the stress of the ride plus going into the office and waiting. The vet at this practice that I want her to see will be in surgery all morning but she might return my call between cases.

With all her health problems I know the clock is ticking....I just don't want her to be in pain.

I would try a half dose of the Tramadol (25mg) every 4-6 hours and no Valium.

Why would she need to be sedated for x-rays? Is she a complete freak at the vet's office?

Yup. I'd worry that attempts to restrain her would terrify her and in attempts to get free she'd wretch her back even more.

Oh I hate hearing this Ducky! Is it her back causing her pain?

I would stick with the Tramadol if it's helping and hopefully the vet will give you something a little stronger.

I like Torb for severe pain, but she's so tiny.

Please, keep us posted, you must hurt just knowing she's hurting

How about Robaxin (Methocarbamol)? It's a muscle relaxant rather than a pain reliever, IIRC. (I looked it up, it is also a CNS depressant--a tranquilizer, I guess, but w muscle relaxing properties.) I know it is often used to treat human back pain, and I think one of my vets has given it to one of my girls. Please check with your vet to be sure.

I echo Donna's idea. If it's muscular, she'll likely get Robaxin; if it's a nerve issue, prednisone is the common med prescribed. But -- we've been giving Perri something entirely different; it's a combo of gabapentin and amantadine for her combined tenderness and nerve issues. No side effects at all and seems to be working beautifully. Something else to think about for your pain relief arsensel. :)

Ducky,

you probably know this, but to be on the safe side (and to help others) I want to say out loud that pred shouldn't be given at the same time as NSAIDs like Metacam, etc.

That's what I was trying to remember. I can't deny her the tramadol since she's in so much pain.

I'm going to the vet's office now and will sit and wait until she can see me between surgery cases. I written everything up so I won't forget anything.

I'm leaving Nina home - too much stress to take her unless absolutely necessary and at that I don't know if I could gt her in the car.

At the moment she is napping. She ate good this morning and I gave her half a 50mg tramadol.

Back from the vet.

Plan A: continue 50mg tramadol up to 1.5 every 8 hours, starting at the lowest effective dose.

add deramaxx

add the Methocarbamol as a last resort since that and tramadol will have a sedating affect.

test her liver and do a clinical exam at the end of the month

NO predinsone since she feels this plan would be better for Nina.

Nina did not greet me when I came home. She's napping in a back bedroom. I gave her a deramaxx. I'll monitor her and see what kind of regimen works.

Please, Nina, no more screams. Last night you looked 100 years old. Today you looked 80. I don't expect you to look young, I just want you to feel better.

Tramadol is not an NSAID so you could use it w pred if needed.

A couple more screams this afternoon. Mostly just when she gets up. She did go out and pee and poop. No more meds for a few hours. When the mailman rang the doorbell Pudge went insane. All the dogs jumped up, including Nina, but this time she didn't scream.

Fortunately I am off work tomorrow so I'll have another day of monitoring her.

She is reluctant to get up from her bed, as if she thinks it will hurt. No screams this last time though but her back is arched when she walks. She won't willingly go outside once she's on her feet but will if I put a light slip lead on and guide her out. I take the lead off outside and she'll go pee but won't go back into the house until I put the lead on her again. I'm not pulling on the lead so I don't know why she feels the need to feel it's guidance. Walking back into the house her back was not quite as arched.

Tonight I will only give the tramadol. No more deramaxx until morning. I don't want to give the robaxin if I'm not awake to watch her breathing.

Another night sleeping in the living room with her.

Do you know what is going on in her back? Our hound went completely lame at the end of Feb and many tests later found out it was a slipped disc... prednisone did the trick, but kept her pretty dopey...

When my vet did her last clinical exam she felt a reaction in the mid-thoracic area. She did not recommend xrays, even though they have digital. She said MRI would be more useful but (her but), our money would be better spent in pain management given her age and other health issues.

We are looking into accupuncture but there is nothing nearby. I have to balance the benefit and the stress of the drive on her.

We feel the clock is ticking. DH and I talked tonight about that ticking getting louder...

K - we felt the same tick... we got home from vacation only to find out our dog was lame. The emerg told us some varying degree of bad. Our vet told us the same as yours... given the age lets see what the meds do... he did a basic test on her and said it wasn't nearo.... she did get better but ours was the same - a 4K nerou consult - and he told us the same about the age. Good or bad we made the right decision. She may have something else going on there but really... we can't do much was his thought. Love them and try prednisone maybe...

I sympathize. Beau needs close to a general every time he needs x-rays.

They can have UP to 20 mg of valium in a 24 hour period. 10mg at a time is fine. They aren't even out of it, just calm.

Beau is on budesonide which is a steroid (he was on pred for over a year) and sometimes yo ujust have to "bite the bullet" and give whatever they need for their pain, IE: NSAIDS as long as it's not long term. Whenever we did that with Beau, we also asked for the vet to give a shot of something to coat his tummy.

Hoping your baby is comfortable.
