Guest gnevins
Starbucks has hookworm. He had it when he was rescued and in his foster home. He was treated with Drontal and then 5 days of metronidazole 250mg tabs 2.5 tab twice per day. Then tested negative a week later. This was followed up with 2 doses of strongid at 2 week intervals. That was 5 months ago and jus tested positive on Wed. after his appetite went downhill on Tues. and I found blood in his stool on WEd. He was given Drontal again and his tummy has been grumbling all evening and he did regain his appetite but tonight has not eaten anything. I am calling the vet in the morning. Any suggestions on the tummy grumbling? He has been biting some also!!!! HOOKWORM SUCKS!!!! He still seems happy and got really excited when I husband came home. But I know my sweet boy is not feeling well!!!! I am still new to all of this...any suggestions!! Edited May 9, 2009 by gnevins

Guest longdogs
Hookworks are rarely cured by one round of treatment. First, the larvae aren't killed by wormers, just the adults, so problems recur as the larvae mature. Second, in some areas there is a constant re-infection from the environment that there is little you can do to stop (other than keeping your own yard clean). The best thing is control by using a combined heartworm/intestinal wormer every month to keep numbers down, then to hit them hard a few times a year with something stronger. Panacur is often used. GeorgeofNE
Intestinal parasites are VERY common in newly adopted dogs. It's not pleasant, but it's nothing to get too worked up over! Guest gnevins
I hope so...he has not eaten since yesterday morning and only lap a little water last night and nothing since. I tried to get him to eat by putting yogourt in his food (which he loves) but he only took one lick of the yogourt!!! Waiting for vet to open~

Guest gnevins
Just came from the vet...he is less worried about the hookworm and more concerned about a bacterial infection!!! He has to fast until tomorrow morning and then on canned food. 2 types of meds. Have to take stool sample in on Wed or Thur to check for hookworm. Too soon to tell would probably give a false negative right now. He said we should see improvement by Monday. Hooray!!! Starbucks was such a good boy at the vets. I am very proud of him!!! I am very proud of him!!! ugh. let's hope Starbucks doesn't have the same infection as Loca. How's he feeling? He is still pretty lethargic. We went for a walk and he enjoyed that. His stool was almost black (blood) and mush...which is what the vet expected. He is taking his meds fine. How is Loca? I walked Starbucks with his muzzle with the cup inside so he couldn;t lick anything or eat any grass. The vet pulled some grass out today. What an awful conversation!!! YUK!! He doesn't usually eat things when we walk but lately the grass and you saw him last weekend. But he does like to lick the ground from time to time and I always think it must be where a female has peed. So who knows....they all LOVE to share!!!!! They're just one big happy family!! No worries....like you said they are dogs and they eat gross things!! Please let me know if I can help you in any way!!!!
