We could of brought Softee home yesterday but what about her quality of life. She was having problems getting up on all 4's and many time would just plop down on her backside with her back legs splayed out. She did pee once in her bed as she could not get up to go outside, when she was in that goofy sitting position and was trying to get up she would get scared and have a bowel movement. She did plop down outside in the mud and had to be wiped down. What if this happened in the middle of the night and she had a panic attack and maybe a heart attack. I used to dread getting up in the morning not wanting to find her gone during the night and no one with her. I do believe what we did was letting her go with dignity and with all our love. It breaks my heart not to see her here anymore.

I am so sorry for your loss. She was a beautiful older lady I LOVE her Xan pic

I love the Xan picture also and it is my favorite picture of her. Xan when she digitized it caught the younger Softee and how she really was while here with us. I miss her so much. I am looking for that other bowl to fill, to wash, looking for her under the cutting table where she loved to sleep, in the doorway while we are making their meals and even waiting for her to come and beg our food off of us.

Softee's profile that was in our newsletter when she was about 14 and she was the last of the senior seniors

Very Senior Seniors #4 SOFTEE

Adopted when she was 5 years old by Beryl Power and David Burns, Softee (Softshoesureshot), born August 2, 1993, retired after a long racing career. She has always lived with a pack of greyhounds, now six of them, including her own nephew. In her long 14 years, she is the most well-traveled very senior senior---yearly trips to Dewey and visits to Florida, New Jersey, and Ohio. In addition to doing meet n’ greets, she has also been a popular therapy dog at a local senior day care center where she loved the attention and was photographed frequently; she and her grey sisters were even featured at the Center in a local newspaper! Though she has slowed down and no longer flies upstairs, her appetite keeps her busy focused on the kitchen. She will escort her parents into the kitchen with squeals, cries and shaking in anticipation of food and then patiently watches them eat. Of course she wins out with rewards of various handouts from the table. Throughout Softee’s years she has made many friends, furred and human, who will remember her as the “big old softee” and lovable hound that she is.
