  1. Thanks for sharing. She is lying on cloth pee pads to keep urine away from her. I will look into DES.
  2. Thanks for your input. Since she took Baytril for 15 days and the culture and urinalysis were clear she is no longer on the antibiotic. My vet indicated that the antibiotic would not help or disolve the stones, that our only chance at dissolving the stones would be giving the SO food. The leaking is so frequent. Even with taking her out every 1-2 hours she is damp at times. I'm afraid that'll lead to more infections. Any thoughts on getting rid of kidney stones?
  3. Our girl Jasmine (9 years 3 months) was diagnosed with kidney stones one week ago. She has been eating Royal Canin SO for one week. After 5 days of eating this food she has started to leak urine very frequently. Prior to this she occasionally leaked urine. X-ray showed clusters of stones in the kidney. In addition, two weeks ago a urinalysis and culture revealed she had Proteus bacteria and blood. She finished 15 days worth of Baytril and the most recent culture and analysis showed no blood or bacteria. We will re-evaluate urine in a couple weeks. My vet wants to give Jasmine Proin 25 mg twice a day for the leakage. He feels this is an older female having sphincter weakness. He thinks it is unrelated to the kidney stones. He also thinks leaking is not from infection. Any thoughts on taking Proin while having kidney stones?? Jasmine does not seem to realize she is leaking. She never licks herself. Leaking happens when sleeping and awake.
  4. Thanks for all your feedback. I really appreciate it. Jasmine has always been excited about meal time, eating fast and licking the bowl clean. Within the past month she has slowed down while eating. On several occasions she left a few pieces of kibble in the bowl. What's interesting though is if I pick her food dish up and put it in the holder where Sam eats she will finish. She's been a little picky with treats. As of now she hasn't lost any weight. Jasmine hovers around 70 pounds so she is not petite. For several years I have been feeding them Blue, alternating between Fish and Sweet Potato and Chicken and Brown Rice. A few times I gave them Blue Wilderness Chicken or Salmon. Jasmines's activity level has slowed down a bit, but it wasn't a drastic change. I was thinking it was her age (8 1/2). She will sleep for hours during the day. However she does a daily walk with enthusiasm and runs quite fast in the yard at least once a day. She jumps up on furniture without any trouble. She has started being restless at bedtime. She used to lay down on a dog bed and sleep all night. Lately she has been laying on the floor moving about to different spots. She will nap on the dog beds during the day. She also gets up and goes out to the kitchen to get a drink, which is highly unusual for her. It has been hot here but we have central air on 24/7. So I think activity level and food are good things to monitor. Interesting about the blood draw, the vet needed two tubes because he struggled to get enough blood the first time from Jasmine. For Sam he used one tube. The vet tried to obtain the blood from a back leg first but my guys weren't having it so he went to the front leg.
  5. I'm in Salisbury so I'm about an hour from Rehoboth. I am definitely considering a second vet checking them out. Can you give me names of the vets in Milford and Rehoboth? Thanks!
  6. My two greyhounds recently had bloodwork because we were going to do dentals. The dentals haven't occurred yet because they both had low platelet counts. Jasmine is an 8 1/2 year old female. We've had her over 6 years and she has been in good health. Her platelet count was 51,000. The only comparison I have is from bloodwork in September 2011 the count was 116. I have not observed any bruising. She does seem to be drinking more water recently. The vet was concerned about the platelets so we did urinalysis. The first two urinalysis had a trace of blood. The third one did not. She also had a trace of protein. She was tested for Lymes in April and June and also received the Lymes vaccination. Sam is a 10 year old male. We've had him 7 years. His platelet count was 61,000. Urinalysis showed a trace of protein. Sam experienced some medical concerns shortly after we adopted him such as Lepto, diabetes inspididus, and more recently arthritis. He does very well on Desmopressin and Carprofen. I am stumped that both of my pups would have such low platelet counts. I am more worried about Jasmine at this time because of the increase in water and she is very restless at night now. I would appreciate any feedback. The vet was initially concerned about the low platelet counts but now is taking a wait and see approach. I am not comfortable with waiting. I scheduled for recheck of bloodwork for next week. A side note, we moved to the eastern shore of Maryland approximately two years ago. Unfortunately we haven't found a greyhound savvy vet here. The current vet does see a few greyhounds. Thank you. Becky
  7. My 6 year old grey Sam was diagnosed with diabetes insipidus in early 2009. He has been on desmopressin (DDAVP) since then and it does work for him. The best dose for him is .1 mg in the morning and .1 mg at night. I purchase it at Walmart in pill form (.2) and cut it in half. It is $115 for a 30 day supply. I prefer the pill form as the eye drop form I initially gave him have to be kept in the fridge. Sam's symptoms included a lot of drinking and a lot of peeing. His urine was very diluted. Bloodwork was fine. We did a lot of testing to get a diagnosis including xrays, ultrasound, bloodwork, urine testing and water deprivation tests.
  8. I am so sorry for your loss of Rainey. Thanks for sharing what a special, wonderful little girl she was.
  9. My boy Sam was positive for lepto in the fall of 2008. I would definitely do the lepto test. Sam was on doxy for several months to take care of the lepto. Our vet suspected lepto due to Sam urinating a lot and when he did go he went for several minutes at a time. His liver and kidney values were also off. He will turn 6 on March 14 and is doing great! Good luck and hope the poor boy feels better soon.
  10. I am so sorry Gotta love a gal that knows what she wants
  11. My Sam tested positive for lepto in the fall of 2008. We did the testing two times to be certain. If I remember correctly he was positive for 3 or 4 strains. I think there are at least 7. We did many months of doxycycline and he is doing very well today. He is five years old. At the time we were doing multiple tests because we didn't know what was wrong with him. He leaked urine and that eventually went away. He has trouble concentrating his urine so he is on desmopressin. I am not sure if that was because of the lepto. I would also recommend that any other dogs he is around be put on a course of doxy as a precaution. Best wishes.
