I cant go into detail.. :( On march 9, the x-ray showed a broken bone due to OSTEO. My original vet said ACL and that he did not do that surgery. I went to another vet, who was so kind, and he asked a radiologist (his neighbor) and a doc/vet @ UGA to look at the x-rays. I got 3 confimations. My son and daughter-in-law was with her on 3-10-09... when she crossed the bridge. Does this stuff run in the family tree? Why dont we see any symptoms before it is too late?? I dont understand...why are there not any options? Could blood work have detected it a year earlier? ....

I'm so sorry for your loss and for your pup. Here's a great website with some good information http://www.wearethecure.org/osteosarcoma.htm. Osteo is the most common cancer in dogs and is far more likely to affect large breeds like greyhounds compared to smaller breeds. I'm not sure if it could be spotted early from a blood screening but typically it is diagnosed after the owners notice their dog limping. Osteo is extremely aggressive and often by the time it has progressed to the point where it causes pain it has metastasized to other areas of the body which is why the prognosis is often so poor. Sending lots of warm thoughts and support for your difficult time :grouphug

I am so sorry. Unfortunatley, no, there is no way to know. One year before Polli was diagnosed with osteo, she developed a severe limp. She reminded me of Igor in Young Frankenstein. It was bad. Within 3 days of getting this limp, I had extensive x-rays done and she was perfectly clear. Not even arthritis, they assured me. Her bloods were perfect. after about 6 weeks, the limp with rest, deramaxx got better. Every once in a while her gait would be off, but we were no longer worried.

Exactly one year later, she started limping in the same leg. After 2 weeks, we decided to bring her in... just in case, but weren't concerned which is why we didn't rush in, however she tripped on the steps, fractured her leg and within 12 hours we had diagnosis of osteo and amputation. She came through that with flying colors. It was a rough 3 weeks but what a trooper. During her 3 months of chemo, her bloods were "beautiful" each and every time as per the vet. Her last chemo was Jan. 5. She left us March 8. The cancer had spread like wildfire and was eating her from the outside in.

Who could know this? All the tests, all the x-rays, nothing showed.

They say cancer is an evil monster. I have to agree.

My old vet misdiagnosed one of my greys, he said it was arthritis and that my dog would

" have to dealwith it" Well I blew out there and never looked back, and BTW I refused to

pay for the misdiagnosis, and won in court. I brought my dog to a new vet and as soon

as he saw Joe's leg he said it was osteo, I lost him 3 days later when he broke his leg

I will never forgive the SOB that misdiagnosed my boy, I could have had more time

with him

I'm really sorry that happened; Maryville was one of those hounds that always left a great impression on me :grouphug

while not personally having a dog that had osteo, i've heard over and over again about dogs that did not test as having osteo until months after they began to limp. i can't begin to imagine the disappointment, anger and confusion, as well as heartbreak, you must feel.

I think I met her--and you--at some SEGA events not long after you adopted her. I'm glad you had as much good time together as you have had.

I'm so sorry you've lost your girl.

sending my sympathy :( Please do a write up on her if you haven't already in Rememberance and tell us about her.

No, blood work would not show anything. I remember talking with the vet and how angry I was that Mahogany had to leave because of osteo--she had perfect blood work up to the end :cry1

They say cancer is an evil monster. I have to agree.

...And sneaky. With both of my hounds that I lost to bone cancer, the original set of x-rays showed nothing. I remember my local vet saying...."Her x-rays look good. Crystal clear."

A month later I took her a specialist who recommended that we do another set of x-rays...it showed cancer.

I'm so sorry...I know how hard it is. :(
