dmswartzfager
I should probably have Brian write this because he is far more eloquent and Carrie was his girl, but here goes.... So, just over five years ago, I posted something on GT about wanting to adopt a senior a few months down the road, and within a few hours, I had a PM from Misser Gil asking me if I had seen the thread he had posted about a pretty 8 year old girl who had just been returned to his group. Well sure, but I had said we wanted to wait six months or so. I e-mailed Brian about the PM and Gil's thread, and by the time we got home from work that day, we had decided to go meet this pretty girl Gil had. We met Carrie on February 14, 2004, and decided to bring her home. It was a tight squeeze on the way home in Brian's Camry with Wren, Tyler, and Carrie; I traded in my Corolla the next day for the Sienna van. We discovered quickly that she liked her space and she liked guarding food - we took several other of our greys to the e-vet to be stitched up because of her - Wren, multiple times, cuz Wren ain't too smart - but Carrie mellowed a lot after the first couple of years. She loved bread and would usually run out to the kitchen when she heard the bread bag being opened every night Brian made his sandwich for work. She got a piece most nights, too. Carrie also loved to collect footwear, toys, and bathmats (while I was in the shower, of course), and loved to chase her green ball. She loved to meticulously fluff her bedding, and would settle down with a groan after all her hard work. Oh, and she loved to shred wrapping paper (when she was in the mood). She demanded to be petted by pushing her nose under your arm. In later years, she took it a step further and actually started snapping at the person who stopped petting her, and if you waited long enough, she would start barking, too. She also "learned" to chatter when the leashes came out. Carrie loved to travel, as long as her humans were close by. She was a worrier if she didn't know where one of us was. She was one of the hounds that went on our first camping trips with dogs - we were using a tent in those days - and then we moved up to a popup camper so we could make the cross country vacation trip a few summers ago. She traveled to 27 states, and played in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. She was a spunky girl, and until a few months ago (activity-wise), you wouldn't have guessed her age. She was very feisty for Dr. Patty's visit last Wednesday night when we discussed our options based on what the ultrasound would find on Thursday, but the sparkle disappeared over the weekend, even though I was hoping that wasn't what I was seeing. Yesterday, she was clearly in a lot of pain, despite increasing her medications, and actually, when we did, she was basically in a stupor. Our feisty old gal deserved better. So, we're in shock. We thought for sure we had a girl who would give Genie's longevity record a run for the money, but that was not to be. I hope she found someone to toss a ball for her, and I hope there are plenty of shoes for her to steal. Run pain free with your brothers.
