Guest Annie
Thank you all so much for the continuing prayers and good wishes!!! They are such a comfort in this confusing, scary time!!! The Neurology department at Canada West Veterinary Specialists and Critical Care Hospital were awesome yesterday!!! A young lady came out to reception to take Canyon from me at 10:00AM. The protocol is that they admit the pet for the day and keep in touch with the owner by phone to update on the results of the procedures. I apologised for BEING HIGH MAINTENANCE but said I wanted to stay with him. They actually set me up in a "quiet room" with him for the day!!! He went in to be sedated for the MRI around 11:30. By then I had him nice and calm and when the assistant entered the quiet room to get him, he gave her one of his HUGEST grins! At that time, I brought Breezy and River in from their luxury dog condo in my van and set them up comfortably in the quiet room too. As I mentioned before, Breezy is exhibiting all the same symptoms as Canyon for the past 4 days now, and when Dr. Sharp came in to update me on the findings, he took a quick look at her. She cried out in pain when he gently moved her head. He also witnessed her tilting her head and trying to shake her head, but being in too much discomfort to do it. He, and we, are completely perplexed by this new development! The MRI on Canyon showed no evidence of a tumour however there was a clear tear in the disc at C5-6. He was quite surprised that this would make Canyon scream for the past 6 weeks, and because of Breezy's symptoms, he asked if I would like a spinal tap done on Canyon (while he was still under anesthetic) to search for evidence of meningitis. He explained that meningitis is not contagious from dog to dog (except rabies) but that they could have contracted it from the same source. The spinal tap result was negative for white blood cells... which meant no infection brewing. Some of the fluid will be sent to Cornell University for a more indepth look, but he doesn't think it will change the result. There is another test, at a different university in the states, that tests for 10 other factors in spinal fluid, so we have opted to go ahead with that as well... mostly because of Breezy. In the past hour, Breezy has cried out 4 times (while lying down) and is slightly favouring her right leg. The exact same symptoms as Canyon!!!!! My goofy, nutty, jack in the box girl, is uncharacteristicly low and looking terribly unhappy. Here is Canyon last night... happy to be home, but still really not himself. edited to add that the remaining CSF (cerebral spinal fluid) will be sent to the University of California Davis where they test for a variety of viral and fungal evidence. Guest Annie
discs that impinge on nerves are extremely painful. Wonder why he is surprised at him screaming? Watching this thread with interest and big hugs to you! Good question, Traci! The example Dr. Sharp gave me was that if he MRI'd 100 people with NO BACK PAIN, 50 of them would have a torn disc, and 20 of those would have 2. Canyon is reacting strongly to the pain, so it is possible that the source of it is something other than the disc. It is also possible that he has an extremely low pain threshold (which frankly, would not surprise me ). Nothing yet explains what's going on with Breezy, though. Guest Alexandra_W
Happy to hear that it wasn't a tumour. But so sad that Breeze also started showing signs =/ I had a male with spondylosis (is that the word in english? spinal osteoarthritis anyway) in his neck, and he would also in periods (seem to be good ones and bad ones) scream out, and wasn't his old self. He was not the drama queen type, but neither the toughest one. But obviousley it was really painful. He didn't show the head tilt and headshaking symptoms tough. he was on pain relief and muscle relaxant (as his muscle would tighten up and go into spasm from trying to protect from the pain) for some years and felt just fine (then he was put down to liver failure in the end, at the age of 12. The spondylosis was discovered at the age of 9) I hope both your dogs will be well soon and that you find out what is wrong. *hugs*

rascalsmom
We are back. My poor boy was crying with fear the whole time. (Did I mention he is not stoic?) Not much was discovered during the physical examination. He responded well to stimuli, but showed resistance to having his neck manipulated, even though it was only slightly moved. The neurologist (Dr. Nick Sharp) suggested we start with Xrays and they took them from 3 angles. They need to be interpreted by the radiologist before they will contact us with the results, so we might not hear from them for a day or 2. Dr. Sharp thinks the most likely causes are a tumor, a herniated disc, or an infection around a disc. Waiting for a diagnosis, as most of you know, is so hard! We continue to pray for something correctable and hopefully non invasive. At least he is on a good pain reliever now, GABAPENTIN, 400mg 3 X daily. Does anyone have any experience with it? I have personally never heard of it before.Okay, now here is the crazy thing... Breezy started having the same symptoms last night!!!! Yesterday evening and this morning she has cried out several times while shifting positions, lying down. We've been together 4 years this week and she has NEVER shown any signs of having pain! We mentioned this to Dr. Sharp today, so he is looking into causes that could be contagious. (Canyon was tested for TBD last year and was clear). If nothing shows on the Xrays, we will set up an MRI right away. I will post as soon as I hear anything... Thank you all so much for your continuing support and prayers for my boy!!! I've been so caught up in my Buddy's problems, I am just now reading about Canyon (another gorgeous red and white boy, like my Buddy!). Buddy is on gabapentin as well, for his LS...he is allowed to have up to 600 mg DAILY...they are 600 mg.tablets that are quartered; we can give him up to four a day. It sounds like your vet has prescribed a much higher dose! I hope you get some answers soon, for BOTH of your pups! Quote Phoebe (Belle's Sweetpea) adopted 9/2/13.
