RobinM
We are hanging in there. He is so thin, it scares me and the vet says, well, we don't want him to lose any more weight. He is eating 900 pounds of a homemade food with tilapia and not absorbing. So... I don't know Quote ROBIN ~ Mom to: Beau Think It Aint, Chloe JC Allthewayhome, Teddy ICU Drunk Sailor, Elsie N Fracine , Ollie RG's Travertine, Ponch A's Jupiter~ Yoshi, Zoobie & Belle, the kitties. Rickiesmom
Robin, this is so worrisome - you must be beside yourself. Are there other options to get nutrients into him until it is possible to get to the bottom of this? I have no idea what that might be, it just feels like there needs to be another option until this is resolved. Huge hugs to both of you. Chicocat
Robin, are they giving him any medications to help with the absorpion? They really should be at this point. Quote Ann

Xan
Oh Robin! Happy had to eat 6 cups a day of z/d to maintain her low weight of 62 lbs, but once we got her "stabilized" (acceptable pudding poop, as opposed to green and slimy goo; eating all of two meals a day with some dependability) on tylan, pred, thyroid and enzymes (Enzymedica's Pet Digest or Total-Zymes - PD is best), I was able to transition her to a grain-free venison-based kibble, and she's GAINED WEIGHT on HALF of what I was feeding before. I hope you can find the right mix for Beau. I'm really sold on the enzymes, myself. I started adding it to the other dogs' food just to check it against their metabolisms, and I've cut their food by a third so far to keep them at their weight. If you do decide to try enzymes to help with absorption, I suggest putting it on the food while it's warm, and letting it work on the food for awhile (I stir it in and let it sit for an hour, covered) before feeding. I had already been doing that, but my vet said that when I asked about his opinion of adding enzymes, too. Hugs to you both! Guest LynnM
Fortunately I've never had a picky eater, but it sounds like in Beau's case, he's gotten hungry enough (his body just plain needs calories) that he's quitting with the pickiness. That's a good thing. Now you need to start looking at calories. How many calories are in 3.5 pounds of tilapia? Hopefully that plus the z/d is enough to get some weight on. I know that was a tough stretch for Joplin... he would eat and eat and *barely* maintain weight. Once his meds started really, really working, he did gain weight, and the hunger subsided a little bit. Lynn
RobinM
Beau is eating anywhere between 1100 and 1500 calories a day. he is eating about 3 pounds of tilapia and 2 cups of oatmeal. the pred is making him ravenous and the IBD is making him not absorbing. He has not gained any weight. Hoping the vet will add to or change the meds soon. Batmom
Is he still losing wt.? I wouldn't expect him to gain weight (except maybe very slowly) until he can take in more calories than he was eating before. Tat would be more than enough to sustain 64 pounds., But he won't be gaining any time soon. We just don't want him to lose an ounce more. I will have him weighed Saturday.
