Just spoke with my vet. The radiologist agreed that he has a bone tumor, but does not think the cancer has reached his lungs yet. She said his bloodwork looked remarkably good. We did not get more spectific than that, but I will talk to her more when I go there tomorrow to pick up pain medication. I will also drop off the address for Dr. Couto.

I hope that Dr. Couto will tell me something different, especially since the lungs do not appear to be affected, but I am not getting my hopes up.

Aw Butch, I'm so sorry. But, I will tell you ... life is not over!!!!!! We are over here battling osteo and had a rear leg amp just over a month ago. I know exactly how you feel: shocked, stunned, no way this could be happening, these doctors don't know what they're talking about, etc. I started writing about our experience here on GT to wrap my head around what was going on. (It's titled Ranger's osteo amp journey or something like that in H&M)

Just a single month later and it's like a whole new world. Ranger is doing greyt!!! There is hope!!!!!! The OSU doctors have done a 3+ year checkup on an osteo pup. It has been a month like no other in my life, but I can tell you that even if the diagnosis is osteo, you can have a normal life with your Butch baby :)

:grouphug Please feel free to PM me if you want any information. We are working with Dr Couto and OSU (they will supply the chemo drugs for you) and are very optimistic about the future.

I second every word of this. Willie had a left front leg amputation on December 31, 2008. Once the shock and horror of the diagnosis was handled, the treatment has been pretty much smooth sailing. Reading others posts going through this helped a lot. He had his first chemo this past Thursday and has had few side effects. We are also participating in the OSU study and being provided chemo through Dr. Couto. Hugs during this uncertain time.

Butch will be 7 in March. He is my healthy boy. My other boy, Bruce, has GME. I've spent the past year going to different specialists with Bruce, taking him for blood work every two weeks, giving him injections at home, and he is not going to beat the disease either. The neurologist reached this conclusion definitively last week.

So, you see, this was not supposed to happen to Butch. I am not ready to handle this now. Butch is my healthy boy.

I can so identify with this sentiment. Renie was our young healthy girl, and we lost her to cancer, so suddenly. :cry1 Not osteosarcoma, though the result was no different. It's very, very hard to accept in the younger ones, isn't it?

I hope Dr Couto can give you a different diagnosis. I have certainly heard of people getting reassurance from him that their dog doesn't have OS when their own vet was convinced that s/he did. He is a wonderful man, too, and I when I emailed asking if he'd be willing to give a second opinion should the dx turn out to be that, he replied so quickly, and said 'of course!'. Unfortunately for us, it was not OS, but was an inoperable tumour.

Sending many prayers that Butch is luckier, and can be successfully treated - whatever the problem turns out to be! :hope

And I 3rd this. Polli is 3+ months post amp and her chemo is finished. Yesterday we brought her to the inclosed basemball field at the high school with the rest of her pack and she ran more than her 4 year old son, Beau.

She is as crazya & fun and silly and demanding as she wa prior. The only difference is she is now pain and cancer free. What better gift to give to our loved ones!

Like others have said, don't give up hope. There are too many battling the same fight and with your boy young, he has that on his side. Like Dr. Coutu says, these pups get around fine with 3 legs.

My Jack had 6 happy healthy months without amputation. We were so fortunate. There is always hope. And we are still hoping that Dr. Coutu can give you even better news. Your boy is beautiful!
