Reaction To Meds?

Recommended Posts

Joe is on a bronchodilator (Theo LA 300mg) twice a day for his chronic bronchitis and Zeniquin (an antibiotic for his pseudomonas) 150mg once a day.

Last weekend (in the middle of a dinner party - naturally) he peed in the kitchen and then had a bout of *very* umm explosive Big D.

I took him out right away and he had another few rounds of this explosive Big D but things seemed to have settled. (I came back to find the dinner party breaking up - wussies!)

Today he's upchucked a few times and has had NO interest in food. Of course in the last bout of barf his pills lay undigested in the bile (I know I know TMI...)

He just seems off, and nowhere near his usual happy goofy self :(

When the diagnosis of pseudomonas was confirmed I asked the prescribing vet regarding the pills together and was told to keep him on the TheoLA with the Zeniquin, but Joe doesn't seem to be taking them both together very well.

Since the pseudomonas is the "worse" of the two conditions, should I stop the bronchodilator until he's finished the course of antibiotics? I really hate to see him like this.

And yes, I will ask my vet but it will have to wait til Monday and I really don't want to start with the EVet ("oh you'll have to bring him in for a complete check up" ka-ching!)...

Thoughts for my poor barfy boy...??

Are you giving his pills before or after he eats, and does it make a difference according to his dosing instructions? If it doesn't make a difference I might try giving him pills after food to try and protect his tumtum from da nastee pillz! Or if you can give him a TUMZ, then food then pills - but check if the tumz is counterindicated with his meds first.

My first thought as to the culprit would be the Theodur (Theophylline). Theophylline toxicity can certainly present (in humans) with vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, tremulousness, etc. A vet should be able to check a theo level (blood test), but I'd give serious thought to decreasing or stopping the theo until you can see your vet again.

OTOH, this is on the Pfizer website of side effects for marbofloxacin:

The following clinical signs were reported during clinical field studies in dogs receiving marbofloxacin at dosages up to 2.5 mg/lb daily: decreased or loss of appetite (5.4%), decreased activity (4.4%), and vomiting (2.9%). The following signs were reported in less than 1% of cases in dogs: increased thirst, soft stool/diarrhea, behavioral changes, shivering/shaking/tremors and ataxia.

So, either could be the problem. This is one you really need to run by the vet - is anyone in the office on Saturday, just to discuss this with by phone? I'd be hesitant to recommend d/c'ing either an antibiotic or bronchodilator without knowing more about the medical history.

I'm not familiar with any of those meds, but I can tell you what worked for my Henry who is currently on antibiotics that were making him vomit and lose his appetite.

I give Henry original strength Pepcid AC 20 minutes before meal time, then I feed him, then I give him his antibiotic after he has eaten some of his food.

I don't know though if original Pepcid AC conflicts with any of the meds Joe is currently on. Are you able to call your vet on weekends and check with him/her first on wether or not Pepcid AC would be OK?

Know nothing about the bronchodilator.

Zema had a course of Zeniquin and had no difficulties (maybe slightly soft poop) but she has iron guts. When in doubt I use the method EmilyAnne describes.

Hugs and best luck with your boy.

Oh, no. Poor Joe T. Bad Tummy, please feel better soon. I wish I had a magic answer for you, Donna, but this is not something I've had experience with.

Valor, my galgo is currently taking the same meds in addition to amoxicillin for a lung infection. I have noticed looser stool, increased appetite and he peed in the house the other night, not usual for him. I give him his meds with food. Luckily Valor has not lost his appetite as he does not have any extra to lose at this point.

Good luck with your boy, hope things work out and he is feeling better soon.

Oh yeah, Valor is acting more lethargic and just off lately. Hard to tell if it is the meds or he's still just not feeling that great. The other factor is that he is going to be 11 and is feeling his age. No throwing up here. When Valor was sick over the summer and the meds upset his stomach I used pepcid with good results. Again, good luck.

Gee, it's hard to say which one is causing the problem given the possible side effects. I'd try the pepcid for a day or so to see if that resolves things. If not, take my boy to the torturnarium. Hugs to you both.

Have you tried homeopathics for the nausea? They don't interfere with prescription meds. I have had good results with Nux Vomica for nausea due to antibiotics.

:kiss2 Feel better, Joe!
