What Could Be Wrong?

Dentals and extractions will vary A LOT from vet to vet and one geographic region to another.

Buddy's dental last fall cost $1000. for 23 extractions, etc.

This vet has a price scale depending on the tooth/teeth involved. Some are easier to extract and some are not.

I agree. My Rickie had a very complex extraction last year (it was done by a board certified dental specialist) and the cost was in the range of $500 for one tooth (a large molar, the roots were hooked, near the blood supply, etc., it was a long and tricky job). I was very glad she was doing the work, rather than a general practitioner.

That said, I agree that xrays are a must beforehand, and, if it looks like a difficult extraction, I'd look into having a specialist do it. If it looks straightforward, then up to you. JMO.

I just called the vet to get an estimate and she said when we come in on Friday they will give us an estimate. Worse and best possible case. $$ is tight this month as I am planning a retirement party so, this could not have come at a wosrt time.

It sounds likely it is teeth, however it could be her neck. Foxy hurt her neck quite a few years ago and had the same signs you mentioned. Wouldn't take treats, off her food and yelped off and on. We took her to the vet and he diagnosed a sore neck. I questioned the eating problems and he suggested raising her food even higher than we normally had it to reduce the strain. It worked! He said that getting a cookie back to her molars to crunch hurt her neck muscles, so she was avoiding anything she associated with the pain. After a course of steroids, she was back to normal and eating treats.

I don't think there's ever a "good" time for a vet bill. Don't get ahead of yourself and try not to worry, just try to focus on getting your girl well. I know it's easier said than done. We'll be hoping for the best

She has a wicked hard time picking up the treats when they fall on the floor. We do have elevated food bowls and they are up pretty high. I will keep everyone posted....

Is extracting teeth expensive? I have had her have cleanings before, but never an extraction. If my mind serves me correctly, it is like 75.00-100.00 per tooth correct?

Laura

When we first adopted Argos, he needed to have 4 teeth extracted. The total cost for the dental, including the 4 extractions was a little less than $500. A regular dental is about $150 at our vet.

Hope it went well yesterday. Anxiously awaiting an update!

Hi Everyone,

I AM SO SORRY to keep you waiting for a reply, I have been pretty busy with this WARM New Hampshire weather.

We went to Pembroke Animal Hospital late Friday afternoon. I LOVE THESE PEOPLE! They are very understand and know the breed so well. Zoey has some bad teeth. The vet said her bottom teeth look great, however, her top teeth are horrible. She has 4 teeth on the top, 2 molars on each side that need to come out. I was given some antibiotics for her to be on for a few days before they have her in for a dental. They think she might have an abses (i am sure I spelt that wrong) which is what is causing her jaw pain, making her scream. Her neck is great with no problems as well as the rest of her.

So, the estimate I got for the surgery on Thursday is 248.00. Is that good? I thought it was pretty good. That includes the cleaning, 2, 3 root teeth and 2 , 2 root teeth removal, blood work and some type of pills to go home with. She saod she won't know until she gets in there is there is anything else wrong with the bad teeth that need to come out.

So, I will be dropping her off on Thursday morning and picking her up after work on. They didn't give me any pain meds for her. They felt that if she was on the antibiotics for a few days, the swelling and everything will go down and she will feel better. I am still giving her a little 81 milligram asprin for the pain. I don't think it helps, but I have to make the effort.

I will let you know what happens on Thursday.

Can anyone tell me what to expect once she has 4 teeth removed? They told me to expect some bloody drool for a few days, i need to wet her food for a few days, etc. Will she always have problems?

Thanks again for all your support!!

~Laura

Can't tell you how glad I am for the update. That price they quoted you is great compared to here. Zoey will soon have some relief and she should do great. What I did for the swelling after a dental was applied ice and that helped the swelling go down. It's the swelling that causes most of the pain. After a couple of days, she should be doing okay and feel so much better. And just a side note about the asprin...I would use Ascripton as it's coated with maalox. It's just so much easier on their stomach. We will have Zoey in our prayers for Thursday and look forward to hearing how it goes.

Hi Laura!

You must live close by! I, too, bring my guys to Pembroke Animal Hospital. I'll be there Monday morning with one of my iggies. Would love to chat, and perhaps get together for walkies or "playgroup" (we are our own playgroup). E me at greyhndz at comcast dot net if you'd like.

That price is quite reasonable for 4 extractions, anesthesia, 1/2 day hospitalization, etc. Who did you see Friday? I will tell you that they give very good anesthesia - when any of my GHs or IGs has needed dentals or surgery, they're awake and on their way home very quickly, ready to eat and get back to their normal routine. They've also been wonderful about getting any of my pups in for emergencies. And they have evening hours a couple of days a week, which makes it easier for those of us who work to get our pups in before the weekend.

I wouldn't give aspirin with upcoming extractions - it affects their ability to clot. You might ask the vet you saw to call in a little tramadol for pain.

Usually, extractions aren't a big deal for these pups. There can certainly be some blood mixed in with their saliva, but that usually stops by the next day. You'll want to keep her very quiet, because increased activity increases the risk of bleeding. A soft diet for several days (soaked kibble, boiled chicken, canned food, etc.) will be recommended, but then she can get back to her normal diet. And tramadol, or one of the NSAIDs like Rimadyl or Meloxicam should keep her comfortable.

I'm close by if you need anything or have any questions!

Jordan

ETA: Burpdog/Diane - this practice knows GHs very well. They provide care for the GPA-CNH dogs, and many of us in the area bring our hounds to them. :) It's an interesting practice - 3 of the vets do both small and large animals. I'd never seen that before.

Oh, that's good news!

They look VERY sorry for themselves after a dental with extractions, and yes, there'll almost certainly be bloody drool. She may stagger and look as if she can't wake up properly for the first little while after you get her home. Keep an eye on her and if you're worried, call the vet for advice, but usually once they've had a long sleep they're a lot better.

She'll need soft easy food for a few days, I give mine boiled rice with chicken, usually, then gradually re-introduce her usual food over a week or so after her gums start to heal. Soften kibble with water or gravy. It's surprising how quickly they get back to eating normally though, and your girl will feel SO much better without those rotten teeth that she may surprise you.

Jack has only about three teeth on one side at the back of his mouth, and one on the other. He manages hard biscuits, kibble, dried tripe, dental chews, even occasionally a pig ear. Once Zoey's gums heal, she should be offered hard foods to help keep the rest of her teeth in good order, but check with the vet about when to start her on those again.

I hope the dental goes well - and thanks for the update! :thumbs-up

Oh, and I agree about the aspirin. ;)

OK, I will get her off the aspirin ASAP! M y best friend who has 4 greys one of them being a foster told me to give her ht since she didn't get any pain meds to go home with. But I only gave it to her once and I haven't and won't again.

I just looking forward to her being healthy and not so bitchy as she is nasty to live with right now.

Pembroke Animal Hospital is the ONLY hospital in this state I will go to. They are the vet that GPA goes to for ALL the dogs off the track. I can't remember the name of the vet I went to yesterday. She looked to be a few months prgenant. She was a bit nasty and made me feel REALLY bad when she saw her teeth, but soon got over that.

I have 2 Iggies as well and one of them is a GPA IGgy I got a few years ago from them. Someone wanted to put him down because they had too many dogs (I HATE PEOPLE LIKE THAT). GPA called the woman who runs GPA and they called me to foster and I ended up NOT being ab le to give him to anyone. So, I have 2 IG and 2 Greys. A BIG family (Me, dogs, boyfriend and brother in one house). I love them all to pieces.

I am little worried with my Louie. He refuses to eat ANY of his dog food. He does this every once in a while. He wont eat for a few days then back to normal. I gave Zoey some Nutro desert snack to take a pill the other day. I put some in the little guys food and he hasnt eaten since. He gets crazy with the junk food and he insists on having it and wont eat for days inless he gets it. Doesn't hel that he is spoiled rotten. SO, no people food either.

Any advice on what to do with Louie?

Thank you ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the price seems very reasonable and I am glad you got to the bottom of her problems, and that it is a relatively simple procedure.

Is the Nutro dessert you're talking about the canned carrot cake? I gave some to Frank and he devoured it! Must be good tasting stuff. Anyways it sounds like your little guy is a bit spoiled in the food department and is going on hunger strikes until he gets the "good" stuff. I don't have much advice other than to cut out the treats entirely, but I know that is hard to do!
