John E Was A Very Special Dog

No need to respond; just hug your dogs and keep each day special as

sometimes you never know which one will be the last.

John E was a very special dog. He sat in the kennel at Greyhound

Friends in Hopkinton for months. He was aggressive when you came

towards his crate and no one could see beyond that. The funny thing

was, at home, he would lie in his crate, at leisure, as long as the

door was open.

He was a truly handsome dog; steel grey with a white star on his

chest. People would say, "How did you get a dog that looks like

that"? And we would say, nobody else wanted him.

He was afraid of many things; thunder, fireworks, the air compressor,

loud trucks and the sounds of a bouncing ball.

Many times we would be searching for him and find him in the closet

behind Len's shirts. Often, we wouldn't know he had been in the

closet except for the telltale hairs on our clothes. He never sat

down in our truck, no matter how long the trip and wouldn't walk on

shiny floors.

He was our Prozac boy, leash aggressive and seeming to be bossy, but

he was not. He needed the Prozac for his anxiety, was leash

aggressive because of his insecurity and bossy because he was afraid

not to be. Any dog could take a walk with him, and after twenty

minutes or a few visits to our home, would be his friend. But he

always trusted us. We always called him our work in progress.

He was a very noisy dog. All night long he would run in his sleep.

When he lay down, he would plop down with a loud sigh. If you rubbed

his ears, there would be moans. He barked out the window at

squirrels, passing dogs and birds on the lawn.

After the loss of Brandy, he and Paul truly bonded. He let Paul lay

his head on his back, sleep next to him, and they were generally in

the same room together all the time. John and Brandy never had that

kind of relationship.

Thursday at the vet, everyone came to say how sorry they were. They

all knew John well. They said he wasn't himself, when they took him

in the back and he didn't bark at the dogs in the infirmary. Or, that

the cats could just be in their cages and he paid them no mind. He

leaned on them, instead of trying to leave. Two techs came out to say

goodbye to his lifeless body.

We always said Brandy held our soul, but John E was our heart. Our

hearts are broken.

It's so clear that John was exactly where he was supposed to be, with the people who knew him best, and loved him unconditionally. What a complex, quirky, fascinating guy he was. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Irene, my heart is broken with yours. :bighug to you, it is so very very hard.

As we talked, John E and Zeus are so very very similar, even to the star on their chests. :bighug

Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers.
