Guest tricolorhounds
Oh, gosh ... how awful! Is there any way you can get him a specialist opinion? I always want to weigh up the pros and cons of all the treatment options. Meanwhile, sending good vibes, prayers and healing thoughts his way! I 2nd the consult with the Orthopedist. Have you thought of using an X-Pen instead of the crate... He may feel more comfortable with a little more room to move around and yet still be confined. for Chase and You

He's doing soooooooo much better just tonight as he's able to sleep for an hour or so before getting up and is finally eating and has stopped panting. So I think he's in much less pain. The X pen is a good idea.

Guest vahoundlover
Prayers to Chase! Is there a way you can sedate if needed? IF he hates his crate-- will he hurt himself trying to get out? Prayers for you too. I can't imagine. He hates the crate but won't try to get out... he'll just give me the pitiful look and I'll have to force him in it each time. Oh no... What part of his back is affected? If it's the neck, do you have a harness for leash walking/potty breaks? Keeping Chase in my prayers for full recovery. Lower back... affecting his back legs.. mostly his back left leg. another vote for acupuncture, it can really help. Any idea on someone around here (SW Michigan) who can do this? Any idea on costs? I *think* Boss's first appt was $100???? Now each appt is $75 We are very fortunate our vet has a good working/friendship with our holisitc vet. I honestly believe Boss wouldn't have recovered from his bulged disc without the acupunture. It made that big of a difference from the first appt. His backend still isn't really strong but he walks around the block and dances when he's happy...that's a far cry from having us literally work his backend for him for a couple of weeks. Carol Becker in Orlando, FL makes harnesses for greys who need support to move about. They are fleece lined and can be worn 27 * 7. Her own dog uses one of these after a similar accident and Carol actually posted a very good chronology of how they treated Fauna, but it appears to have been pruned as it was awhile ago. In any event, do contact her - these harnesses are terrific. Support Harness Boss wears one of these 24/7, we can't pick him up by it, but it is a life saver in helping him keep his balance and preventing him from going down. Guest GentleHugs
My Heisman was diagnosed with the very same thing just about a month or so before he turned 9. It's called Intervertebral Disc Disease aka Wobbler's. Although it was not common for Greyhounds to end up with Wobbler's - here this past year, I've seen and heard about more and more Greyhounds being diagnosed with it. Resting for about 2 weeks, prednisone and being leash walked helped tremendously. But, the vet strongly advised no more running or jumping, no more steps otherwise he faced being paralyzed, too. So, we started in monitoring him and once weaned off of the pred, he started in with daily doses of glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM. Every once in a while if he overdid his activity level, he would start to have a few problems. Back to bedrest he went. Surgery for Heisman was not an option though. We almost lost him once from being put under so we did our best in monitoring him, giving daily massages and making sure he got his alternative meds. We even bought a home with no steps and everything Heisman needed on the main level of the house. Heisman lived for 3 1/2 years post diagnosis until he was 12 1/2. Finally, the Wobbler's took it's toll on him and he could no longer get up or walk without help. We let Heisman go October 1st. Wobbler's is a slow progressive disease and will eventually lead to bladder and bowel incontinence and paralyzation from the swelling of the disc that is pressing in on the spinal cord nerve.. Heisman had some bowel incontinence but it was not often. He also had some balance and mobility issues every once in a while. Cold weather can affect it as well. Keep Chase quiet for as long as you can to help that swelling in that disc go down. Pred aleviates the swelling off of the spinal cord nerve which in turn will aleviate the pain and he can regain his balance and mobility, too. Although I don't like using prednisone because it can damage the liver, it was a life saver for Heisman in the beginning. If you would like to read Heisman's story - here's the link: Heisman's Story I'll say a prayer for Chase.... and if you need to talk - you can email me privately at gentlehugsgreyhounds @ yahoo.com Take out the spaces before and after the @ sign. Guest K9_Lady
Sending positive thoughts Chases way! FYI~My Malinois "Arco" was diagnosed thru xrays with a compressed disc in his neck that is pretty bad. I had not slept more then 3 hrs straight for months because of his panting and pacing. Arco has other medical problems so it took a while to get it all figured out. And because of his other medical issues and his age he is not a good candidate for surgery. His Vet also said I have to be very careful with him because if he did something to make it worse he will loose control of his legs also. But the GREAT news is... Arco's ortho Vet is also certified in acupuncture and mixes Western and Eastern Medicine. Arco has had 5 ElectroAcupuncture Sessions and is sleeping most nights and I can not say enough about it. If you choose to try this make sure that the Vet is Certified in the treatment. All the best! Edited to add~Arco has to wear a Harness now and I got his, thanks to the advice from Greyhound Peeps; from Wiggles, wags and whiskers! It is awesome! Thanks... the vet didn't say anything about a disease/syndrome so I really think that it's just an injury right now. Of course, if it doesn't get better, then we'll have to look into other causes. This was caused by an injury (Lu running/jumping on him) so I'm hoping that with time he will make a full recovery. Vet seemed to think that as long as he doesn't injure himself further, he'd be fine.
Guest Pinky
Thoughts and prayers going out to you and Chase. We had a lab that went through this, we just couldnt' keep him in one spot so we ended up having to give him valium to help keep him from wanting to move around too much. I have to say, it came in handy for me a few times too when the stress just got to be too much!

Guest vahoundlover
Great news!! We made Boss *right* his back legs several times a day, it really helped him...something else that helps remind them that their back end is there, is to take broom handles (something of that nature) and lay them down so that they are spaced a foot or so apart and have him walk over them...he won't have to pick his feet up much but that little bit will help reinforce the brain and backend communication. Continued prayers coming your way..
