DH, our group's adoption coordinator and I had gone to a new kennel to meet the trainer and discuss possibly placing some of their dogs. We were supposed to pick up one girl that day on a trial run. As we were playing with the many happy pups in the kennel the trainer told us about two shy dogs he was having trouble placing. Catlin, a 53lb cow girl shyly came out of her crate and slowly sniffed us before deciding to give a couple of kisses. She was amazing. I wanted to bring her home then and there but of course we hadn't come for her. We did agree to take her into our program and a couple weeks later we picked her up. During those weeks our adoption coordinator had discussed Catlin with a family who had been waiting for a very special girl. They were smitten by her description and met us on the road back to CT. As soon as she jumped out of her car they knew she was the one they had waited so patiently for. There were kisses all around and she even jumped waaaaay up into their super-size pickup. Renamed Nikki she blossomed at home, and DH and AC got to visit with her last weekend. She ran up and said hi to them and just as quickly ran back to mom and dad - she knew she was really home. She'd been home for about a month when she went to the vet to be spayed today. We know the possibility exists every time we send a dog for surgery, but this is the first we've lost since we were elected to the board of our group. My heart is breaking for the adopters who had waited patiently for their perfect dog and for Nikki who deserved so many more years of happiness.
