Bordatella 6 Months Vs One Year

I didn't even know there was a one year bordatella vacine until I read it on GT.

My vet has given the 6 month vaccine. The vet tech said that the boarding kennels here require the 6 month one. Since I don't plan to board I was able to get Gracie the 1 year vaccine.

Which is better or is there no difference?

We do every six months.

We have to board Piaget occasionally, and our vet gives it every 6 months. However, my previous girl (non-grey) had a different vet, was also boarded, and hers was given once a year.

I don't think there is a difference in the vaccine -- I think it is the vet and the situation. While the shot may provide whatever partial protection it does for a year, it is highly recommended that boarding or day care dogs get a booster every 6 months.

Part of my job is to call vets for vaccination records on boarding/daycare dogs. 99.9% of them consider bordatella good for a year. However, even if the vet says it is good for a year the we only consider it good for 6 months if they board or play. We give tons of internasal boosters.

When Poodle went to a vet for grooming that vet insisted on only doing the injection as he swore it worked better and longer than the internasal on adult dogs. :dunno Other than that I don't give it as my vet isn't crazy about giving it unless the dog is in a boarding/dayvare situation.

I have my vet do the intranasal instead of the shot.

Yup, no difference in the vaccination itself. My vet said they have seen too many dogs getting bordatella about 10 months after their initial vaccine. So, the recommendation has been made to get it every 6 months.

We're still opting for a year because we're not high risk.

The vaccine maintains very good efficacy for 6 months and tapers off over the next 6 months. So... if your pup boards every November and you get the vaccine in August... a "1 year" is sufficient. I also prefer intranasal to the injectable as you are providing more local immunity at the site of infection and it seems to be less reactive.

Bordatella vaccine is "optional" and only for "at risk" dogs and vaccination cannot completely guarantee that the animal cannot contract kennel cough.
