Bodie's Big Adventure1

Guest Bodie

On the recommendation of many of you, we drove Bodie, on Friday, to Ohio State University to meet with their greyhound expert, Dr. Couto. I wanted to tell you that all of you are right! Dr. Couto is wonderful!

We left at 5:00 am on Friday and got to Ohio at 11:30 for our 12 o'clock appointment. We were interviewed immediately concerning Bodie's symptoms and Bodie was taken back right away to meet with Dr. Couto. I am happy to report that Dr. Couto diagnosed what several of Greytalk's responders diagnosed: Bodie most likely has an autoimmune disease, probably one known as Pemphigus Folliaceus. Dr. Couto called in a veterinarian/dermatologist to confirm his diagnosis and then followed up with skin biopsies to have the diagnosis confirmed. They are sending the biopsies to a specialist in Florida - supposedly the best in the country. That way if their diagnosis isn't correct, she may be able to read the skin and tell them what he does have.

The good news is that it is treatable with affordable medication. Dr. Couto sent Bodie home with painkillers. (Bodie has one stitch at each of the 4 locations they took biopsies and Dr. Couto wanted to make sure he wouldn't be in pain for the trip home and until the stitches are taken out by my local vet) He also recommended that Bodie take Pepcid AC since the medication my old derm/vet put him on can cause stomach ulcerations. (Something she never told me!) He is also putting Bodie on a schedule to withdraw him from the medication since cutting him off cold turkey can cause some pretty awful withdrawal symptoms. (Something else she never told me! Thank goodness I didn't cut him off abruptly on my own.) When the results of the biopsies come back, Dr. Couto will start him on his new medication.

What surprised me the most was that Bodie had a physical, complete blood work, was seen by two specialists, and had biopsies. He spent a little more than five hours in their care. And the total bill? Not much more than what I paid his regular vet for his last visit. I almost fell over in shock! I live on a limited budget and I was worrying about paying for all of this. What a relief to know he can get such high quallity care and I can afford to provide it for him.

Thanks to all of you who responded and encouraged me to make the trip. It was well worth it. At last I'm feeling that Bodie can be cured and I believe that Dr. Couto will be the one to bring my old happy boy back to me. To all of you on Greylist who took the time to respond and encourage me to go - THANK YOU! I'm not sure I would have made the trip without your encouragement and now I'm so glad I did!

Dr. Coutou and his staff are simply amazing and the connections they have are invaluable. I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Courto at Dewey last year and I was in awe of him. How he loves this breed.

Such great news that your Bodie's condition is treatable and that Dr. C is working on getting best answers/treatment for your pup. We as greyhound owners are so very forunate to have Dr. Couto and his staff.

Please keep us posted on what the final results are. I know you feel 100% relieved.

Praying for all the missing greys!

What great news! Did he say how long the results will take?

The results should be back in two weeks or less. I can't wait to get him started on treatment and get my happy boy back again. Right now he is walking around somewhat tenderly - those stitches in the paw pads are sore - but he will heal and with medication may be running soon.
