  1. We may feel alone without them, but with the List it feels like they are not alone.
  2. My Mazy recently had a similar injury. Xrays did not show a fracture but I did not like the quality of them due to the positioning (I'm a human xray tech). I contacted Dr Couto for a review of Mazy's case. Dr Couto shared the images with Dr Dyce at Ohio State who said: There is soft tissue swelling dorsal to the proximal right tarsus. The resolution of the images as received makes interpretation of any subtle orthopedic abnormalities difficult. Soft tissue swelling in this region would be typical for avulsion of the insertion of the cranial tibial muscle. Mazy was treated with Rimadyl for one week, a few Tramadol in the beginning for pain, and limited outside time/area. She still wanted to run, even before the swelling of her hock went down.
  3. Badger and Kenzie have been tucked in. Too often it is extremely difficult to write about our own pets passing and to find fitting words when our friends here have a loss, hence my reason for beginning the Bridge Angels List. This year I consider myself lucky. I only lost PUdge, my mutt girlie, and my mom.
  4. Saying goodbye to the beautiful greyhounds and their friends who left us in 2014. As you run with the wind send a caress to wipe our tears. Gone but never forgotten. Loved forever. 5. Looking at old posts - looks like they are in the DC metro area.

  7. I'm so sorry that Wylie had to leave you Jen.
  8. Zinny, forever a shiny Christmas star.
  9. I will add Ikaris to the list of Bridge Angels for December. I am so sorry for your loss.
  10. Try keeping him leashed to you in the house so you can learn his signals.
  11. Ditto what tbhounds said. I think the blood vessel is far enough away to not interfere with an aspiration. My Gracie had a histiocytoma appear on a foot. It came up quickly. Vet was pretty sure that's what it was and added it would probably go away on its own within a month. It did. That was years ago. Nowadays I would have asked for an aspiration.
  12. Rratney, just adding a safety note: If Mina gets fearful to the point of trying to back up away from you, pull the leash toward the ground. This will help keep her collar from slipping off. Keep the leash short so she is near your side rather than ahead or behind. Lead with confidence and hopefully hers will begin to grow.
  13. What a lovely tribute. Jason, I am so sorry for your loss. It was a privilege to have met your John.
  14. Some folks will advice you add pumpkin. Start with a teaspoon per meal. While it helps some dogs with my Gracie it loosened her up instead. What kind of food is Chase getting? IAMS green bag small size kibble has fiber and will help to firm things up.
  15. Avery Animal Hospital, Newland......Dr. Brent Jewell and he is a real Jewel.....Graduate of NC State, Worked at Carolina Vet. Services in Greensboro for a while. He is very up on greyhounds. His phone: 1-828-733-9810. http://www.averyanimalhospitalnewland.com/
  16. Update from Dr Couto who initailly suspected a tiny fracture: Report from Dr. Dyce below. Good news! "There is soft tissue swelling dorsal to the proximal right tarsus. The resolution of the images as received makes interpretation of any subtle orthopedic abnormalities diffcult. Soft tissue swelling in this region would be typical for avulsion of the insertion of the cranial tibial muscle, and if that is the diagnosis then I would expect a positive response to the treatment plan (no need for antibiotics)." Guillermo For me Dr Couto's consult fee was worth it to hear this. Mazy was not seen by her regular vet at the practice and I did not have full confidence in the one who saw her. My only real criticism (because I'm a human xray tech) was how they didn't center the xray beam on the swollen part of her hock. Because they were trying to get most of the leg included, and the hock was couldn't be centered, you lose detail of the actual injured area. It was OK with me that they did xray the whole lower leg, as well as the other leg for comparison, especially since they did not even have to sedate her. The swelling started going down by day 2 on the rimadyl. Then she ran when DH let her out. I've now condoned off a very small area outside our backdoor for her potty area. Neither Mazy, Charlie or Mikey are happy with me right now.
  17. Let me check with some of the GFNC people. Might take me a day to find out.
  18. Update: The swelling has gone down and Mazy wants to run. She's annoyed that I won't let her. She's putting more weight on that foot today and hops with it off the ground when she wants to go a little faster. Erika it's an itty bitty bone so no cast or stabilization was needed. She's fine but it scared the heck out of me.
  19. Still waiting to hear the final word from Dr Couto. It's just an itty bitty bone in the middle of her foot. She probably did break it while running like a banshee around the yard. Although she didn't run on Sunday, she did run on Saturday. Unless Dr C's specialist friend recommends it he says a wrap, cast or boot is not necessary. We are very happy with this outcome, especially since we all think the worst when our greyhounds limp.
  20. Dr Couto responded that he thinks there is a fracture of the central tarsal bone. He is sending her images to someone for another opinion. He also agrees with my vet's course of treatment. Now that she's had breakfast and a nap and a pill, Mazy is in a better mood.
  21. Just got back from the vet. This morning there was definitely swelling at the right hock. Xrays with comparison to the other hock were done. Cannot see any fracture but you can see the soft tissue swelling. I have already sent the images to Dr Couto. I included her labs since again her creatinine was elevated out of greyhound-normal. She's had past problems with this and infections at the vulvar area. Fortunately antibiotics and swiping the area everyday cleared that up. We are to leash walk her and periodically ice the area. She was givein Rimadyl 100mg - only 3 pills so we don't screw up her kidneys. Also Tramadol 50mg for pain as needed and Simplicef for any infection. We'll recheck the labs in 30 days. She whined the whole time, probably saying I want my breakfast rather than I have an owie. At least she didn't have to be sedated for the xrays. I'll update after I hear back from Dr Couto. Thanks for all your good thoughts.
  22. I think I feel some swelling at her right hock.

  24. Thanks Tracy. She's definitely not interested in zoomies now. She wanted to get on the couch (her favorite place) but she couldn't do it. I *think* I feel heat near that knee. No swelling. I'm just surprised that I can touch her everywhere without a reaction. Normandburrell, Mazy's ears appear to be broken. Only one is able to do the origami fold right now. She is definitely feeling discomfort, but not at the level to rush to the E-vet.
  25. Ask your vet about Zylkene and Clomicalm. I'm not a big fan of drugging a dog but these meds will help a dog relax so that they can understand alone training. My Gracie was only on Clomicalm for 3-4 months. Zyklene is a natural product.
