  1. Each dog park is a bit different, but most people seem to always go at the same time. I find I have good luck with it being empty or almost empty just before dark. Probably very early in the AM is also good. The small dog side is usually empty and I'm used that as well if I don't like to look of who's in the big dog side.
  2. I don't have any of these issues, but my thought would be to make a smaller area away from where the squirrels; etc. are so she can't get to them. Close to the door/stairs. Maybe an x-pen or snow fencing. The smaller area could be the potty area...hopefully.
  3. HI!! Glad you stopped by for a visit. I tried to send you a message a few months ago and your mailbox was full? Then I checked to see when you had last been here and it had been months before that. Hope everything is going well.

Thanks. Where have you been? I tried to send you a message but you mailbox is full??
  5. While Hunter will go a couple of times a day during the week when leach walking... loose at the dog park is another matter. I think during the week he goes just enough to make room for more food. At the park he will go 5 .. 6.. 7 ... times. By the end it's just a spot.
  6. Be thankful he's not a confirmed leg lifter. I had a foster last year that wouldn't stretch to pee unless he was ready to burst open. He came here the day before our first snow and I didn't realize how big of an issue it was. So I didn't prepare the yard to make clearings around anything vertical....and last winter was a long and nasty one. I would usually have to turn him loose in the barn and he would pee on old hay bales or the side of the walls. Most of my male GH's stretched to pee. Many times they have one front leg further back than another. If it's the one nearest me, I will give gentle tugs on the leash and they will move that foot forward.

    Sonny

It was with sadness that I sent Sonny to the rainbow bridge earlier this month. He had his 14th birthday on September. He was my second dog in a row that I inherited from a family that no longer wanted him. He was quiet and unassuming. A great foster dog brother, even with Nitro who he had a scuffle with. He never held a grudge. http:// While he didn't do anything extra special or have any quirky behavior, he used to sleep like this a lot. He would put one leg over his head. http:// He liked to play fetch. He originally would return tennis balls. Once at the dog park someone left a squeaky ball. After that, it was the only thing he would bring back. He would run after anything thrown, but if it was squeaky he walk away. I'm not playing with 'that'. I started buying those balls to keep in the car for him. Sharing a bed with a foster Missy .. not his idea though. http:// Not the best traveler. He liked to go places ... just hated the car ride to get there. Here he is sharing a Dairy Queen with his new brother Hunter in the back of the van. http:// I think Hunter misses him. There were 2 beds in the living room. One was a bolster bed that was supposed to be for Sonny, but Hunter would usually get it first. If Sonny did manage to get it, Hunter would stand there hoping he would get up. Sonny's usual bed was the ortho bed. With Sonny gone, Hunter spends a lot of time on the ortho bed. He has one favorite stuffy that he will leave on that bed from time to time. Until we meet again....
  8. I've found 40 lb. bags of Iams mini chunks at Walmart sometimes. Not always, but I don't always go there to buy it. The grocery stores in my area carry Iams. Also Walmart; Target. Tractor Supply has some varieties. I don't think Petco or Petsmart carry Iams...or not all the stores do.
  9. Can she sleep in one of the kids bedrooms...one the cats don't go in?
  10. When one of our groups dogs needed pheno for seizures, the price difference was outrageous. His first foster home was buying it at a regional grocery store chain for @$35. His second foster home didn't like that store, so it was switched to the Target store near her work. $76. for the same medication/dosage. After checking around, CVS was the cheapest. @$17. for the same thing. http://www.goodrx.com/ check for prices in your area here.
  11. Yes, dosage goes by weight. Our group didn't have much luck with the standard 3 day wait 21 days and 3 more doses We changed to 5 days, 21 days , than 5 more doses. Which seemed to work well However a couple of the last dogs adopted, even though they passed a required fecal check for a health certificate, tested positive for hooks after. Someone else here said that their group does a 3rd round. Valley vet has more options for purchase. See link below. Sentinel heartworm also treats hooks...not chewable as advertised though. http://www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html?pgguid=a981a331-83e0-42f5-bf86-0a5b069cc1f0&sfb=1&itemguid=9f587aa0-4f36-418d-ac52-ec19e6d253e5&utm_content=31652&ccd=ISH004&utm_source=shopping.com&utm_medium=shopping&mr:referralID=7110f2fd-d426-11e4-8635-001b2166becc
  12. We have a GH on potassium bromide. The compounding pharmacy we use has 3 flavorings in addition to the non flavored. Chicken, beef and peanut butter. This dog eats it willing in his food. The first flavor was chicken. Although they say there was no chicken protein in it, he seemed to be losing fur. The second bottle was peanut butter. Whether it was the peanut flavor or the addition of melatonin, his fur has grown back. It is my understanding that the more often you have to give the medication, it leaves their system quicker. Some dogs do better on the bromide because it stays in their system longer, our dog gets one dose per day. It's a fair amount, to much to put in a capsule.
  13. Many years ago, I had read that if there was a lot of time between the last meal of the day and the 1st meal the next day, some dogs would do this. A late night snack at bedtime helped some of these cases.
  14. She's very pretty. I hope to see her at the baech someday.
  15. When our group started getting GH's from Florida, we had a probelm with resistant hook worms. Normally we do treat them with drontal plus when they first arrive. NH has a health certificate requirements. When they arrive they have to spend 48 hours in quarantine and need to have a negative fecal test. If negative, they are issued a health certificate which is good for 14 days. If a positive test, then they have to be treated and retested. Treatment conitunes until we get a negative result. If they are adopted after the 14 days, they need another fecal. If negative, they are issued another health certificate. Even though they may pass the first fecal, they may test positive on later ones, depending on the worms cycle and when they are tested. Panacur is the usual choice. They package will say a dose for 3 consecutive days. That wasn't working for us. So we went to dosing 3 days... wait 21 days... then 3 more doses. Even that wasn't always successful. Somehwere they found a study/article written by the track vet at Dairyland. He/she suggested increasing form 3 days to 5 days, wait 21 days and then 5 more doses. After they are released from quarantine, we now do this as a matter of course with all our GH's and it has worked well for us.
  16. I buy mine at BJ's as well. Sonny just had very runny poops .. so many he's not feeling well. 13.5 years this month.
  17. I hate to think it is so ... but has Iams changed the formula of the magic green bag? My guys have been very gassy the past bag or two. I bought some yogurt this weekend, but the neutralizing effect hasn't kicked in yet. Any one else notice anything?
  18. I've used a gentle leader on a couple of houds...but I would never use one on a spook. I don't like a general everyday harness on a dog that actively pulls. It gives them something to lean into and (I think) makes them pull more. I would use one a spook that doesn't pull. I like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/SPORN-Non-Pull-Halter-Dog-Harness-Training-/370926078816?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&var=&hash=item565ceacb60 for a dog that pulls. It can be a trick to put on at first. The fleece cover is loose and slides and if your not careful when you unhook the straps will come off. What I did was to tack (sew) the fleece to the strap itself.
  19. Is there no adoption group near you? If there is, maybe you could foster a GH so he will have a companion. Hopefully by the time the foster is adopted he will be used to your coming and going and it won't be an issue.
  20. My current foster will wear a coat, but will not pee with one on. He is a leg lifter and will not pee unless he can lift his leg on something, Every other male GH I've had will stretch and pee when needed. I think that the dog coats I have a belly strap that may be a bit to far back and he feels that it's in the way. Luckily, for him, he doesn't seem to mind the cold.
  21. I buy the Iams green bag. 38.5 lbs. I wouldn't waste money on the dog beds though. The ones they sell at the Portsmouth NH BJ's don't last if you have a dog that nest's even a little. Years ago they had some really nice bolster beds, but they haven't had those in a long time.
  22. I was so sorry to hear about Aquitaine.
