I'm so sorry to read this. :grouphug It helped me a lot to join circle of grey when I got Snickers's diagnosis. Dr. Couto and Dr. Marin at Ohio State were phenomenal.

It sounds like roundworms. I watched a big clump extrude from Roo when she was a little puppy. Apparently a mother dog can pass them onto their puppies. Roo must have been heavily infested to have that many. The vet gave us Drontal.

I asked a really similar question about my Roo a few months back. She just turned one in May. Last summer and winter she was very furry (could have been puppy fur?) and she gradually got very bald thighs, stomach and a less dense coat this spring/early summer. Prior to this, she was spayed in late March and about the same time I switched to Costco puppy chicken mixed with a little Costco/Kirkland adult chicken/rice/vegetable. Nothing else is different. We brought her in for a check and booster shots and I asked our vet about it. She didn't think it was thyroid related because there are no other symptoms. We did try to take a blood sample just to check but Roo was a very unruly patient. So no blood sample. I'm curious to see if Roo gets fuzzier when winter comes. It did coincide with the food change, although she seems to be doing well on the food and her spaying/hormone level change.

I was told since we live in a wooded area and the dogs do a lot of trail walking that the lepto was recommended because they can catch it from wild animal urine. I've also heard that it doesn't cover all the strains but at least it's something. So far, no one has had a negative reaction to it.

The second treat is the trick -- that way they don't even think to reject the first treat when they discover something in it that *shouldn't* be there. Is there any way to grind it up and disguise it with a strong-smelling food and put it in his food bowl?

Holy smoke! The surgeon did a great job. What a nightmare for Bones and his family to go through. I'm so glad there's a good outcome. Hope to see pics of his continued recovery.

I agree that Circle of Grey is a great support group with great advice. My five-year-old Snickers had a front leg amputation and I went the chemo route. She didn't have too bad of a reaction to the chemo and it does greatly increase their chances of long(er) term survival. Unfortunately she collapsed and lost her ability to breath independently while waiting at the vet for her fourth chemo treatment. The specialty hospital never explained what happened, but my local vet suggested that with such an abrupt event that it could have been a blood clot. Who knows. If I had to do it all over again, I'd still opt for the chemo. Dr. Cuoto at Ohio State University should be able to steer you in the right direction too. Someone here should have his contact info handy. I hope Ham is doing well and has a quick recovery and you have many many more days together.
