SimonSays, may I ask what brandof raw are you feeding? I'm feeding Nature's Variety raw turkey patties right now. This is the second greyhound I've fed raw, and have never found a kibble even close to raw that provides good digestibility (I think that's the word!). My problem is though, that prepackaged raw has always been more expensive that even the most expensive kibble I've found.

I've heard that Dontral works better than Panacur, or is this not always the case?

Yes, we just finished a second round of Panacur, and our grey is still scratching and biting himself. I'm assuming another fecal test will come up positive for hooks, so I just want to forget this test and start another round of worming. I'm just not sure if we should continue with Panacur. Our vet said they stopped carrying Drontal because of a huge price increase.

You keep it on until the tail heals. It's so lightweight that they can still wag the tail, but if it hits somethingx there is absolutely no impact on rhe tail tip itself.

Sounds like some good progress! Our boy gets crated during the day when we're at work, but sleeps on his bed in our bedroom at night. Your story reminded me of obe of the nights we did crate him during the first week we had him, with the crate being in another room. He kept barking and rooing, like it was the end of the world. My wife suggested maybe he needed to go out for a potty break. I said that we should just give him a little more time to settle down. Well,I eventually gave in to his crying, and discovered he had gone poo in the crate, and was so upset about not being able to get out. Last time I made that mistake!

The best thing that worked for us was taping a lightweight plastic woman's hair curler around the tip, only taping the half the curler that points towards the body, so that the tail tip is still exposed to air (it's inside the curler)but won't actually impact anything if it gets wagged. If the dog wants to bitebon the tape or curler, spray it with Bitter Apple (or the home made equivalent).

If you can't trust your adoption group, who can you trust? He obviously wasn't as well-informed as you were when you got your first grey. Live and learn, and move on. Have a greyt day!

Pretty much the same for ours. A couple weeks at the kennel (upper crate too), then to us. It's been about 7 weeks, and he still has shown no desire to get on any furniture. Although he does like to sneak a pillow from the couch once in awhile. Thinks they're stuffed toys, I guess. 🤔

Sorry, but I just wasn't as personally affected as you were. I saw him as being honest with his struggles, and I applaud him at being honest and open about it.

Best reply yet. There's no reason to get on someone's case about something like this. Greyhounds, especially your first one, can be an amazing, but often revealing learning experience. I'm sure it hurts enough to make the decision to give the hound up. But if the OP ever is willing to try again, I'm betting they're going to be more prepared than many of us were when we got our first grey.

Glad to hear that the accupuncture is helping! We got both accupuncture (with electric stimulation) and chiropractic for our late greyhound, Zoomer. Several months after having his rear leg amputated because of osteo, he began having back issues. I know the treatments helped, but he was never able to relax during the accupuncture, but the chiropractor adjustments really loosened him up.

I really appreciate this thread. We've recently adopted "Leica Tiger" (formerly raced ad T's Randy Savage), and I've been having to address similar issues. We've haf him just over a month, and rhe first couple weeks he showed no signs og growling over high value items. But I think as he's comes out of his shell and gets more comforts and confident in his new life, we will need to consistently address this witj him. Mostly now, I'm working on trading up, but I think I need to incorporate more obedience into those situations, like "leave it.

I agree with locket on having a second check for hooks. We adopted Leica just 3 weeks ago, and he had nearly the same symptoms, except for no loss of appetite. His stool had been consistently runny, unless he had a 100% raw meal prior. We just did a worming for hooks, finishing it up last week. No more stomach growling, and today was the first time he had good, firm stool with a kibble meal, and that being TWO poops in the morning!

Back in 2000, when I got my 9 week old grey pup,I fed him a plant baded dry diet. When he was about 1-1/2 years old, he began loosing the hair on his hind quarters. I discovered EVO by Innova, one of the first meat based, RAW-like dry foods. Within two months, the hair had returned and his muscles got more defined. I eventually transitioned him over to about 90% raw. This was back when raw was extremely controversial, at least in the US. This Friday, we are finally getting another grey. He will be transitioned over to a meat-based dry, with raw meaty bones to suppliment.
