  1. Thanks so much for the replies. This helps as we have been unable to get a straight answer. This was a new vet and she also suggested Tylan powder. The other vets wanted to keep doing more and more tests. The blood is a concern but has diminished for the most part. Again, it just seems that when she runs with other dogs she has an episode. I just read an article that human runners can suffer from this if they push their bodies too hard so that's why I posted. Thanks, again. "I" feel better now!
  2. I have had this little girl since about November last year. She is 4 years old. She had a really tough time at the beginning with stress - really not knowing where she was. Amazingly she adjusted in a about a month and is calm and the perfect dog. Had a difficult time getting her to eat but is fine now. One vet has suggested that she could had have stress induced colitis. I keep a log of what she eats and what comes out the other end. She has improved very well. For the most part, her poops are normal but sometimes (like today) she has liquid poop and some blood. It seems to me that if she has been running too hard this is when this happens. The weather has been ridiculously hot so not much chance for extensive exercise. Any ideas? (Tests have come back negative) Thank you.
  3. Just a note about my experience about stairs and floors. When we first moved into the house the floors were hardwood and ceramic and my boy did fall when I was not there. He was only about 5 years old at the time but he did hurt himself and it came back to haunt him later with his back issues (he had a collision racing at the track and had a back injury). He did walk very carefully on floors of a similar type. We did put carpeting down for him to prevent any future falls. Doing the splits can really do damage to these guys. We are now in an apartment and have had our new greyhound for a few months. I feel it is important that she learns the stairs in case of a black out and being the only way to get out of here. They do find these concrete stairs very difficult, especially when they look down it is very hard for them to see how to navigate and just back away. I have taken her on steps in parks and other peoples homes which she finds easy enough and then tried bringing her up the apartment stairs with me in front which seemed to work and managed to get up 3 flights but going down is going to be a more difficult challenge. Phil is beautiful. It does take a while and patience with them to understand everything that is so new to them. I do admire how they do actually handle everything that is so different to them.
  4. Thank you for all this input. This is so appreciated and helped me get a much clearer course of action. Based on everything I will put her on metronidazole tomorrow. Thanks again!
  5. Thank you for your reply - this is helpful. I did contact the adoption agency and they were pushing for dewormer and the vet prescribed panacur. I contacted the vet clinic and a different vet said she would not have but her on that medication but a different one (metronidazole), and to stop the panacur now. I am getting more and more confused as this has been an ongoing situation. I guess the question I have now is it OK to stop the panacur or should it be taken for the full course if she should have a parasite infection? I have had her for about seven months now and she is a perfect dog. Just to note, she had gained 6 pounds which were needed and has been staple for a few months.
  6. Could anyone tell me if they have experienced side effects with Panacur. I gave my dog the first dose of liquid panacur last night. She has been up most of the night and wandering around. I have taken her out and she has diarrhea which she had before taking this medication. She has no appetite today. Could this be a sign of the medication removing any parasites? Thank you for any help.
  7. Thank you very much for your response. I called the clinic and when the receptionist said "greyhound" Dr. John picked up the phone! We had a long chat about Kasey, my greyhounds and Dr. Couto, who is coming to the area in the fall. I did follow your heartbreaking thread about Kasey and I am so sorry but there were no words to describe how you could have felt with what you all went through. Wishing you and Ryder well.
  8. We are in Toronto Canada. Is there anyone here who might know of a really grey-savvy vet who is truly knowledgeable and compassionate. Also someone who is kind and will put my dog's wellbeing before anything else. I have taken my dogs to many vets, many of which have made the situation worse and ended up with fatal endings and heartache. I have received so much superior advice from this forum and am very grateful. Thank you for any recommendations.
  9. My boy slipped on the floor (he might have done the splits) when I first got him and before having a chance to put rugs down. He did hurt himself and suffered for it later in life. They can seriously hurt themselves falling like that (on ice in winter as well). He was very careful afterwards visiting other places with slippery floors.
  10. Typically the routine is 7-8 a.m., 3-4 p.m. and 9-10 p.m. This worked well for my previous greys. Even now when she is getting up around 4 a.m. she is fine until up to around 4 p.m. or even later. I am puzzled (and tired!).
  11. I have had Breeze for about three months now (started out as a foster!). She has really come along day from being a very sad dog to a very happy dog. She is great with other dogs, no SA and an absolute sweetheart. But for a while now she is getting me up at 4 or 5 o'clock every morning to go out -- she really does need to pee and sometimes poo. Alternatively, she is fine during the day and does not want to go out even for about 8 or 9 hours. She has had tests including UTI. Has any one else gone through this and changed this schedule? I am not sure if it is just becoming a habit. I have tried withholding water (which I don't like to do) and feeding her at different times but this does not work either. Any comments would be welcome. Thank you.
  12. We have used aloe vera on bald spots and or tummies that have been shaved for surgery (98% aloe vera - no parabens, SLS or Phlthalates) to sooth their skin.
  13. Thanks, again for your input and your stories about your greyhounds. She has come along way and gaining confidence. She looks like she is definitely "at home" now. She is pretty much a perfect dog (always was really!). She is still spooked by the dishwasher for some reason but I'm sure she will get used to it. She is great with other dogs and loves her runs with her greyhound friend. It's great to see them running and how happy they are (in a safe place by the way). The main and only real issue now is to find food she will eat. We have been through many kibble choices, frozen dinners and some raw but she looses interest on all of these eventually. (Perhaps this belongs as a new thread?) We have tried all the tricks -- plus sardines, eggs, yogurt, chicken broth -- you name it. Anyway perhaps it will continue to be trial and error still unless someone has a magic idea. I have read many threads about trying to get their dog to eat and have tried many of the ideas posted. Anyway, she is sweet, pretty and adorable. I am very lucky.
  14. Thanks everyone for your responses -- it was encouraging to get your input. I should practice what I preach: time and patience (thanks greysmom). Over the last few days she has come along and settling in more. We go for many walks, socialize with other dogs and she has a greyhound pal she runs with occasionally which is really good therapy. I think we are on the right track now!
  15. We have adopted a new beautiful red grey -- 4 years old. We have had her since October and even though she was very quiet seemed to be making a lot progress, gaining more confidence and settling in. Her appetite has not been great which we think was being in a strange place. Her crate was her safe place but has the run of our home. Just recently she seems to be regressing and afraid of noises that did not seem to bother her before (the dishwasher for instance and anything that makes a noise like a timer). She is good with other dogs on walks but a bit distant if they want to play. Would just like to ask how others have handled this type of nervousness and how best to handle it. Our other two greys were much more active and interested, this one seems sad (as if she is missing someone/something) and getting more nervous. Feel so sorry for her as this should be the best time of her life. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thank you
  16. We have seen dogs grieve over the loss of another dog they are close to. This might be contributing to the problem?
  17. Thank you for your input. I have seen the video before and yes they come from a high protein diet which I would like to see. This dog is a foster and am taking direction from the foster group but have recommended that we switch to acana grasslands. My own dogs were on that and did well for the most part. Thanks again everyone... Any input is gratefully received.
  18. We started with Natural Balance salmon and sweet potatoe but she does not like it. Even when added chopped liver treats. Had added chicken and tripett which she does like but generally just leaves the kibble behind. Peanut butter works for taking meds or even just by itself. I will try your idea of mixing it in with hot water. Switched to purina proplan sensitive stomach formula yesterday but that does not seem to work either. Normally we would use a higher quality brand but was advised to go this route. Thanks for your input!
  19. We have a new dog from the track. A sweet girl who is 4 years old and weighs 58 lbs. She has been with us 4 days. Having trouble getting her to eat kibble. Can anyone recommend a kibble which might work for her. She does eat treats, peanut butter and other snacks but is not eating enough. She is settling in quite well but am worried that she will start losing too much weight. Thank you.
  20. I have been following your post and your heartbreaking journey with Kasey. I am so so sorry. No, it is not fair.
  21. Perhaps there is someone on the forum who is located in her area who could help as well. I would but doubt that she is near us.
  22. Thanks greytluck. Will check it out. Hope your pups are doing well.
  23. Can anyone recommend a really good acupuncturist in the Toronto area, or even further out. I think it could work well with my greyhound. She has a very low tolerance for meds. Thank you for any suggestions and experience with these doctors.
  24. Sent you an email with "Emma" in the subject line. Hope it goes through. We are not far from you.
