  1. We heard just recently from a neighbour that someone who lived on the same street just adopted a wonderful greyhound called Emma. So just wondering if it is the same one. We are in Toronto we would be pleased to meet you and perhaps be helpful with the SA. My grey is very calm and would love to meet other greyhounds. Please let us know the best way to connect if this is the case.
  2. We had a black out over the holidays one year which meant going down the stairs in the apartment building. Our two dogs would not/could not do those stairs but would do carpeted stairs if necessary. The problem looked like they could not *see* how to navigate their way down. Their sight may not have been as good as in the past or the stairs were configured so they could not distinguish one stair from the other. Hope this makes sense!
  3. My boy would do this, push the food away with his nose. It was very difficult to figure out why. One thing for sure he was not a "diva" in any way. It may have been allergies but there were other things going on as well.
  4. With my boy we did a six week trial. I am sure we were there for at least 15+ minutes each time -- I also requested that they put blankets down on the ceramic floor. He had back issues and went down the whole length of his back.
  5. Your poor dog. I hope he is continuing to improve. Best wishes to Dood!
  6. Thank you all so much for this information. I think we will have to go to the vet again to ask for a solution -- they are not very forthcoming. With reference to supplements she is on Omega Alpha GlucosaPet (which is Canadian), B complex, tumeric and Coenzyme Q10 as she has a 5/6 heart murmur. I will definitely look into Fresh Factors and the other suggestions. She has been on Arnica for a little while now and that seemed to help her mouth to a degree -- she does not seem to be rubbing her face nearly as often. (Not sure if arnica is a problem when it comes to interacting with other medications?) We tried Chiro for her back last year before this dental surgery. She did collapse one evening after one of the sessions but was back to normal after a couple of hours. The chiro decided to wait for a while before further treatments. Perhaps acupuncture will help. I will ask the vet, again, regarding gabapentin -- there was some concern about being hard on the kidneys but the pain she is going through has to be addressed somehow. She will be 15 on May 16 this year and I am planning her birthday! Thank you all again for the responses. It makes me feel less alone in this ordeal.
  7. Thank you everyone for your support. Have taken note of the asprin advice. I think she is a little better today. The vet wants to yet more tests? But has not come up with any suggestions for arthritis pain. We already know that she cannot tolerate Nsaids (she bled out on Meloxicam). steroids are not an option as well as opiates. Tramadol does not work. (These facts have been stated in previous vet/specialist reports.) Is anyone aware of a pain med or alternative that would work for arthritis. People keep saying she's getting old (yes, she is older but still enjoys running a few stints in the park every day and thinks the car is her second home). There must be something that could make her feel more comfortable without the terrible side effects?
  8. Thank you for both your replies. I did not use the codeine but gave her half an asprin. Goodness knows why they prescribed codeine anyway knowing her history. I have Tramadol but she does not do well with that either. I have used Traumeel personally and it has worked for me. Unfortunately, it is not available here now for some reason (after 20 years). Will call the vet today. Thanks again.
  9. My dog is 14 now and had dental surgery Oct. 15 last year and yet to recover. However, today she is having trouble walking due to her back end and one front leg which is probably due to arthritis. Back in October the vet prescribed codeine for pain but due to her low intolerance for drugs (opiates?) so I am wondering if I can give her some tonight until I get back to our regular vet. Has anyone had a dog with adverse effects from codeine. Thank you for any response.
  10. In addiiton to her post surgery problems, my girl has been coughing all night (hacking). I am concerned it could be relative to her heart murmur? Am trying to see a vet who has been recommended to us. I know there are quite a few reasons for coughing/gagging.
  11. Thank you Batmom. Maybe stomatitis or something like it is an issue. She does need bloodwork done again -- hopefully next week. Looking for a new vet.
  12. Thank you both for your kind replies. So glad Charlie is doing so wwell -- I have been following your thread -- what a struggle you had. These animals are so precious. I am hoping someone might have some suggestions for us and this sore mouth -- the dentist is not suggesting anything?
  13. Yesterday I posted the issue we are having with my 14 year old girl who had dental surgery about five months ago and the issues with her mouth post surgery and the trouble she is having with her jaw still being so sore. This was her third dental to remove the 8 remaining teeth and perhaps if she had the teeth removed much sooner it would have been easier. It was delayed because, for a long time, I was told not to put a 14 year old under for the procedure. However, the point is her teeth were never going to get better and did become a much more serious issue with infection in her mouth which could have affected other parts of her body. There was no other choice but to go ahead.
  14. Last year I posted that I had an older dog with a level 4-5 heart murmur requiring dental surgery. I received a great response and advice from many for which I am very grateful. The surgery did take place on Oct 15 last year (many months ago) with a dental specialist and board certified anaesthetist, but unfortunately with complications. She had adverse reactions to the drugs used and had to stay overnight which was not in our plans. And then an infection on the outside of one side of her face and burst (this happened two times and seemed to have settled after the second time). They had left a chip or something in her mouth during surgery, which may have been the cause. They wanted to put her under again to explore(?) but she was in no condition to through that again so soon. She reacts badly to many drugs. She has no teeth now as they removed the remaining two on either side of her mouth and the four canines. There is also a dark saliva stain all around her mouth. Her mouth is still very tender on both sides and front after all these months so one of the concerns is that she is not eating enough and starting to lose weight. The question is -- has anyone else had a hound that has suffered discomfort after many months after dental surgery? (Thank you Tracy for your continued advice for many many months.)
  15. We have often requested to have the records given or sent to us directly and then give them to the new vet. This way we know what is being communicated. We also requested the records for our boy after he left us -- it was painful but needed to see the complete history in the records.
  16. Even on the Trifexis site is mentions side effects include skin issues: http://www.trifexis.com/about-trifexis/faqs.aspx
  17. I am truly sorry and shocked. I was waiting for him to come home. Our thoughts are with you.
  18. I have been watching your thread and wishing you well over this terrible ordeal. I am so sorry. If it were my dogs neither of them would do well staying in the clinic and it would be very stressful for them. Is there anyway you could bring Phoenix home safely. As Silverfish said, could they change the painkiller or give him something to coat his stomach to handle the medication. My dog was given Sulcrate to give for her stomach because of her intolerance of metacam. But, of course, this is a much more complicated situation. Hopefully he will be home soon. Our thoughts are with you.
  19. These long weekends are horrible when we need help like this. My girl needs dental surgery quite urgently and I need to talk to someone also who is away. With reference to tramadol dosage perhaps someone else could help with this issue. Have not had much luck with that drug. Can you say who you are going to see or is it not appropriate on this forum? By the way my boy, who I lost this year, was at the kennel with Hobbes. We met him then and I think again after you had given him a wonderful home.
  20. Just checking into see how Corinna is doing and if you found a clinic/vet to help her.
  21. I'm glad you are changing clinics. Wish I could recommend someone as I know they are here. My boy was misdiagnosed this year and they went off in the wrong direction doing multiple tests. Quite simply, they were not paying attention to the real problem. Best wishes to you and Corinna.
  22. I agree "what a jerk". Don't they understand they are there to help our guys. We are in the Toronto area also and $90 is at the high end in my experience especially when they don't know what they are talking about. We have definitely heard of many greyhounds with corns but fortunately not ours. Can any of the other greyhound owners you know recommend a better clinic/vet. I have been to many and will never go back (I'm setting myself up here!). It seems that you need someone who is truly greyhound savvy and sincerely understands your concerns. Quite honestly, I have received much better direction from this forum in many cases, for which I am grateful.
  23. What a beautiful love story and a beautiful sweet boy. I am so sorry for the unhappy ending... Duke was loved so much.
  24. I have been watching this thread and seen what you have been going through. I am so terribly sorry for your pain and your loss of Frappy.
  25. Hi Duncan, my girl seemed better after two days. Perhaps we acted before the situation progressed.
