  1. Hello greysmom.... The dosage for meloxicam was based on her weight at 30 kg and the syringe measures appropriately. I cut it back to 29 and then to 15. Tonight I gave her 15. The antibiotics are dosed at 375375 mg x2 day. She does not eat enough in my opinion (perhaps 1/3 of what she should mostly at night when she was getting both meds) Peanut butter is a hit with her and have tried to give her a lot -- not exactly a canine diet! Tonight she ate liver and some ensure and some ice cream. Enough I thought may be enough to give her the meds. I did see a threat that talked about "Duralactin" so I ordered it a week or so ago. It is taking a long time getting here considering we are not far away.
  2. As mentioned above, she is still on antibiotics. Could you recommend other Nsaids and especially supplements that could be used as an anti inflammatory that would not cause stomach upset and bleeding out? Have done so much research including going to holistic vets and many others. Any advice would be appreciated. She is hurting.
  3. Yes, she is also on Clavaseptin (Clavamox) which has been ongoing and started at the same time -- Aug. 26. We did not stop giving her the antibiotics but the swelling came back just after 1-2 days without the meloxicam.
  4. Now we have a problem. The reason for the meloxicam was to reduce the swelling in her mouth (infection under tooth) and arthritis in her back. Both improved but she started the stomach problems. Now that the meloxicam was stopped two days ago the swelling has now returned to her mouth. She has been on the Sucralfate for two days now. The evet here would have no idea about this case and the appointment with the dental specialist is Tues morning. I feel we should give her half a dose of meloxicam today as she is now on Sucralfate and contact the vet tomorrow. Any thoughts. Really worried.
  5. Many people here are asking for titer tests rather than vaccines to establish that they are still immune to rabies. If so, they do not give the vaccine at that time.
  6. Thank you so much for your replies. I am glad I went to a vet for the second opinion before things got worse.
  7. The vets we are/were going to did not want to give either of my guys any more vaccines. They were over 11 years old with health issues.
  8. Our girl has been on meloxicam for almost a month now. A visit last Friday with a different vet to get another opinion was concerned about the affects of this drug (dark stool, reduced appetite and sensitivity of greyhounds) so she prescribed sulcrate plus and recommended taking her off meloxicam. As of today she has had two doses of sulcrate (5 mls to be taken without food an hour before and after the dosage). No meloxicam has been given to her today. I was told that there would be an immediate effect of relief if there was any pain due to bleeding out or stomach ulcer but so far she seems more distressed. We are awaiting an appointment with the "right" dental surgeon which is to be next Tuesday as her teeth need to be extracted. Due to her heart condition I am not sure how this is going to play out. The question is has anyone experienced this situation or encountered any reactions to sulcrate. Also it has not been mentioned if water can be given after this drug within the hour long period. She is looking for her water. Thank you.
  9. When we contact Dr. Couto earlier this year about my boy, he got back to us very quickly as did OSU. We are in Ontario. Wishing you well.
  10. Thank you for your good wishes. It might be Fraser Hale -- he is a dental specialist in Guelph. Not with OVC at this time anyway. He has been recommended a few times. He would want the results of these tests anyway before doing anything. He does not have an anesthetist but qualified RVTs. Will see how the X-rays go. I see you have had your fair share of drama over the last few days -- so please to know that Xavi has survived his adventure. What a scare!
  11. Update on my girl's situation. We had an appointment with Guelph OVC and had to wait 10 days then they called to postpone for another four days. We could not wait that long so went to a vet in Toronto. The ultrasound did take place on Friday. It was done by a cardiologist and I insisted on being present. They say she has a 4-5 level murmur but as far as "heart disease" it is not terribly serious. I think like the at the very beginning stages. Her heart is not enlarged and they did take this knowing she is a greyhound. Her lungs sound clear but because she coughed they want to take X-rays of her lungs before going any further with dental surgery. So the X-rays should be done this week. She has been on Clavamox and Meloxicam for almost a week and this seems to have helped a lot. Her jaw had swelled under one of the infected teeth and the swelling has pretty much gone now so hopefully she is a lot less pain. I'm not sure who I can trust with the dental surgery if they find the X-rays are O.K. and, alternatively, if they are not they have not advised what to do. This seems to be taking for ever and I am terribly worried let alone the fact that my dog is in pain even though the meds have helped considerably.
  12. We are so sorry to hear your heartbreaking news of your loss of Carly. Thank you for sharing this important information. It is very relevant at this time for my little girl. Our thoughts are with you and Carly.
  13. I have made an appointment for Sept 2 with Dr. Gowland. The person I spoke to felt strongly that under the circumstances she wanted us to see this vet. It seems like an eternity which it has been already. She is eating, not as much as I would like, but maintaining her weight -- she was weighed yesterday. We do have pain medicine for her. Thank you for taking time to respond and for your help in making the decision as to where to go at this point in time and hopefully they will be able to take care of her "under one roof" for her heart and teeth. Any other advice would always be welcome. Also thank you everyone for replying to my post.
  14. I double checked and it's actually "Dr. Gowland" -- my mistake! Thanks very much for the article.
  15. It's hard to believe but Labour Day is the weekend after this one and we'll be into September! I have also put a call in to OSU so waiting to hear back and don't think we could get down there as quickly as next week. Thanks for your input.
  16. Yes, I have called them (thanks for the link which made it easier to find them). Dr. Garland is the one I would have to see but she is away until September. They have ultrasound there which would be needed for her heart but no cardiologist. Also they may recommend that the ultrasound be done elsewhere. Did you take your grey there for dental?
  17. Yes I would be interested in your offer of more information on how to find my way around. Thank you. Hi Robin 1017. It is about 9 to 10 hours from here. I have heard good things about Angel. Have to figure out how I'm going to put it together to look after my dog.
  18. I'm so sorry to hear about Lucy. It is so difficult losing them at any age, I think. Our boy also passed away in April and it will take a long time to come to terms with it. Michigan also is not far away.
  19. We are about 7 hours from Columbus, OH and 6 hours to State College, PA all being well with traffic (and border crossing!) Not too far really.
  20. Thank you everyone for your replies. Any recommendations where to take my little girl where she would be safe? I would drive just about anywhere. Earlier this year I was in touch with OSU and Dr. Couto when my boy was "suspected" of cancer and before that the neurologist at Angel in Boston who came highly recommended for his back injury. Thanks RedHead for the link to Guelph. Will contact them today.
  21. Yes, they are precious. Are you able to let me know who performed the surgery.
  22. TBHounds -- Thank you for being "bold". My dog does not whine or complain. She has always done everything to please -- I did not have to train her. She is now looking at me to do something to help her. I will probably do as you say with another post and see if anyone can truly recommend where she could be safely looked after. Here or the US. I have been to many many vets in the last few years. Thanks again.
  23. My goodness! Thank you so much for these very direct statements -- very much appreciated actually as I am here looking for direction. With my boy because he was almost 13 they did not seem to be very interested and comments like "we just need to keep him comfortable (until?)" with many drugs (this was a vet I had a lot of respect for many years). With my girl I should have taken action a lot sooner but the hang up was her heart condition with no direction coming from the vets (of which there have been many). Tomorrow I will take much more serious action -- I made a commitment to look after her didn't I?! Thank you all!
